February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

"1000/5 STARS" I have grown up going to Stonehaven since I was a kid! Dr. Moody would blow up a glove with his nose by placing it over his head. I miss Dr. Moody since his passing, he was the first person who made dentistry fun!! However, Dr. Trevidi is kind, humble, and professional. He was compassionate when I was worried about my son. He answered all my questions!! Dr. Neilson made time to treat me for a crown even though it wasn't convenient. Dr. Neilson has a calming presence that is very comforting. His shots are by far the least painful I've ever had at any dental visit! I've had a lot of shots in my life from different people, haha. He really cared to make me feel comfortable. The entire office staff is always welcoming. The front desk is engaged and proactive. Dental assistants have always been friendly, helpful, and knowledgable! I loved going to the dentist growing up. This is the place where my seed was planted for my love of dentistry. Kalani, was the first hygienist that I felt truly cared, educated me on the connection of oral and overall health, and personalized our conversations by providing realistic ideas for goals to improve. He doesn't shame and treats everyone like family. He shows empathy and really wants to help. He was the person who influenced me to improve my oral health. Without realizing it at the time, he was one of the people who inspired me to become a hygienist. I'm now graduated and a hygienist, but still go back for cleanings by alternating where I work and Stonehaven. If you want to better your oral health, visit kalani! Dentistry can be a stressful field, yet this office has a stress free vibe for patients. This is an office that treats you like family. They show everyone kindness with professionalism!

I like how they explain everything they are doing. They took their time, didn't feel like they were rushing me through to get to the next patient. Very nice and helpful with all my questions.

Told me how much my bill would be and then after the work was done sent me a bill for an additional 160$ then when I called to ask them about it I was told that what I was given upfront was an "estimate only" and I would be responsible for the additional amount. Not an honest business in my opinion and the billing person had no interest in helping work it out.

I had a root canal and the pain continued. They redid the root canal and the pain was on and off. I went to different dentists and they took pretty thorough check up and said the root filling was put in too deep. I had to remove the tooth for an implant. When they removed the tooth, the filling was stuck out at the end of the tooth. It could have been just a regulat root canal if it was done right, but now I lost a tooth. The worst experience ever.

When we took my son to his first dentist appointment here it wasn't the best first experience for him (he's 3). When they tried taking the x-ray of his teeth they used an adult sized attachment (the exact same one they had just taken my x-rays with, which you could tell was way too large for his little mouth and that it was hurting him, he was crying and kept trying to take it out of his mouth). And had asked us to try to just have him hold down for the cleaning and after a few moments of trying to get him to stay still they asked us to just reschedule for when they could have an anesthesiologist come in to have him sedated for the cleaning. It seems to me they aren't accommodating for kids of any age at all if they only have the one size mouth piece for x-rays. Which I understand was our partially our fault for not just taking him to a pediatric dentist, but when we had specifically asked before making his appointment they said that having our 3 year old son come in that they had accommodations for him I had expected more. And even though they honestly weren't able to do anything at all for my son (took two MAYBE three slightly blurry x-rays) they still marked that they had cleaned his even though they had assured me it that the attempts of barely getting any x-rays of his teeth wouldn't be marked as "cleaning his teeth" because nothing was done to his teeth at all. Not only did that happen to my son but the dental assistant had made a few passive aggressively belittling comments towards my husband like he was a child, he just has bad genetics; he takes way better care of his teeth than I do but she never said any of those things to me or tried to "show me the correct way to brush my teeth" like she had for my husband when he went in by himself. I was treated fairly well but having my boys treated so poorly I never want to come here again I hadn't written a review initially after our appointment because I honestly didn't know that anywhere would do any better (new parent experiences and all) but I just had an appointment for my son that was a night and day difference to my experience here, I had honestly (and quite literally) cried with relief at my son's new dentists office and my husband teared up when I told him how good his new dentists was.

EDIT: I previously had a poor experience with Stonehaven, but I went in much later and they addressed it with me and profusely apologized without me saying anything to them. I'm going to leave my previous review so their response makes sense, but up my star rating to be in-line with my more recent experiences. -- I've been going to Stonehaven's Provo office for years, and have always been impressed with my experience there. I love my hygienist, and have only had good experiences with the other staff. Unfortunately, I do not feel comfortable returning. They are not taking the extra precautions against COVID that their site states. What really made me uncomfortable, though, was Dr Moody unexpectedly doing my exam with no gloves, and then taking his mask off as he sat next to me during a procedure, speaking across me to another employee while a tool held my mouth open. Through these last 5 months of COVID, Stonehaven sent me emails about how dental care is vitally important to my health, but I believe this behavior from one of their dentists shows that my health isn't actually that big of a priority.
