In 1911, the University of Tennessee first launched its Memphis campus, dedicating it solely to health science education and research. Seed programs in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy quickly flourished, and within a few short years, new programs were initiated in health professions, graduate health sciences and nursing. Each of those programs grew to become a college in its own right.

In 1963, the UT Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville, based at the UT Medical Center, became part of the UT Health Science Center. In 1974, the UT College of Medicine in Chattanooga, based at Erlanger Health System, joined the UTHSC system.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is a statewide institution with its home campus in Memphis, and major locations in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, as well as more than 100 clinical and educational sites across Tennessee.

Our institution comprises six fully accredited health science colleges Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy which are integrated for maximum educational and clinical impact at our major locations. These colleges are the primary source of health care professional training for the state of Tennessee. The main campus in Memphis serves as the home of all our colleges, as well as the location of core-partner teaching hospitals Le Bonheur Childrens Hospital, Regional One Health, and the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and our affiliated teaching hospitals including Baptist Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Methodist University Hospital, and West Tennessee Healthcare.

The Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Health Professions constitute our major location in Knoxville, which is based at the UT Medical Center. In Chattanooga, the College of Medicine maintains a large campus in close association with the Erlanger Health System. In Nashville, a partnership with Ascension Saint Thomas Health System, serves as a base for our colleges in the states capital city.

As Tennessees only public, statewide, academic health system, UTHSC is dedicated to delivering groundbreaking discoveries that improve the lives of those in our immediate area, as well as those in our state, region, and global community. We are committed to providing an environment that is challenging, enriching, productive, and safe.
