Thank you for taking the time to learn about State Endodontics. We are a dental practice that is limited to Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy). Dr. Hertzberg, Dr. Fields and their staff are committed to providing the highest quality of care in a relaxed atmosphere.

A patient is typically referred to our office from his or her general dentist when root canal therapy is needed. As part of a patients treatment team, we are in regular contact with your general dentist to ensure continuity of services.

The following information is provided to answer your questions regarding root canal therapy, as well as, our office procedures. If you would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at (814) 231-7668.

Dr. Hertzberg was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he received both his undergraduate and dental degree in 1992 and 1996 respectively. Dr. Hertzberg then went on to receive his certificate and Masters degree in Endodontics from Boston University, under chairman Dr. Herbert Schilder, developer and pioneer of the warm vertical condensation technique, in 1999. He practiced for two years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before starting his own practice in State College, Pennsylvania in 2001.

Dr. Hertzberg is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, the American Dental Association, and the Centre Dental Society, where he was past president (2004-2005). Currently, he resides in Port Matilda with his wife Madeline and their daughters Kasie and Addison.

Dr. Fields was born in New York and was raised in the suburban Philadelphia area. He attended Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania where he received a B.S. in Biology in 1982. Dr. Fields earned his dental degree in 1986 and his certificate in Endodontics in 1988 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

He is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, the American Dental Association and the Pennsylvania Dental Association. Dr. Fields has been in practice in the suburban Philadelphia area since 1988 and has recently relocated to State College with his wife Andrea and their sons Matthew and Jordan.

Emergencies are seen on a daily basis at both offices. It is our goal to accommodate each patient to the best of our ability. When scheduling, please note that most treatment is completed in one visit.

We do make every attempt to minimize your wait time; however, emergency cases can arise which may cause a short delay. Please know we like to spend the necessary time with each patient. Thank you for your patience.

I had a fantastic time with Dr. Hertzberg and his staff, they were able to see me almost immediately on short notice. I felt welcomed and at ease with the explanation of the procedure to be performed. Dr. Hertzberg ensured my comfort during the procedure explaining what he was doing at the time and what to expect. Post procedure he contacted me personally to follow up with the procedure results and rate any issues or pain I may have experienced. I felt almost no pain post root canal procedure. In essence I would highly recommend Dr. Hertzberg and his staff for any Endodontic needs.

I had an emergency root canal right before christmas. Doctor Marc was joking and making me comfortable even though I was in a lot of pain. He also discovered roots were still in a root canal done years ago. I highly recommend Doctor Hertzberg, if you need to get a root canal done.

I debated leaving a review but in my head I kept going back to the events of my recent visits at State Endodontics. The first visit I was there for a consultation. It was nice to put a face with the person who honestly, was not knowledgeable at all. Her "customer service" voice wasn't genuine at all and she kept repeating herself rather than answering my questions. My husband was with me during my first appointment and once we got back in the car had a chuckle about how the two women at the front were educating each other on one of the procedures the office offered. My husband said the older lady, which is the one I also delt with on the phone, came out into the waiting room, grabbed a pamphlet and went back around to the other side and said to the other woman, "here, we'll learn about it together." Thats reassuring when the people who greet you first don't even know the prodcures! It made sense after the phone conversation I had and we just chuckled about it in hopes that the people in the back knew more. I came back another visit for treatment and had little interaction with the front desk, was seated quickly and had a pleasant (if there is such a thing) root canal. The doctor and younger assistant made the procedure go fast with their joking back and forth. When I was finished I was walked to the front desk and again, had to deal with the older woman at the front. The assistant I was with (I wish I could remember her name) was filling out a paper and the front desk lady tapped the desk a few times as if she was flustered and said "ok, which one is this?" Im sorry but if I am paying the price I was for a root canal I feel I deserve more respect than being referred to in that manner. It felt degrading, like I was just another number. The assistant quickly said "(my name) had number (tooth) completed today." It made me feel good I wasn't viewed that way from her also. Its going to be hard to refer a friend or family member to that office if I know they'll need to deal with that awful front desk before getting to enjoy the pleasantness of the back.

I spent the evening before my root canal looking up YouTube videos of the procedure. Needless to say, I was not reassured! However, it turns out that in the hands of a capable and confident professional like Dr Fields, the only discomfort is the muscle ache from holding your mouth wide open for 40 minutes. There's no way to improve on that, so I can't possibly count that against him. Dr Fields performed the procedure to save an upper molar that had been impacted on by a wayward wisdom tooth. I'm very grateful, because the first dentist I saw had declared the tooth unsalvageable. The alternatives would have been to live with considerably diminished chewing surface or go in for a more expensive implant! He and his staff were extremely considerate; they coordinated with the oral surgeon who removed the wisdom tooth to set up the procedure, checked on the insurance benefits and provided excellent advice on post op recovery. The soreness was gone in 3 days, and the teeth is back to functional form!

The saying always goes "It's more fun than a root canal!", so when I found out I needed a root canal, I went into it expecting the worst. Well I could have set that bar much higher and State Endodontics still would have exceeded those expectations. Prior to my visit, Debby called to clarify my insurance information and even did all of the "dectective work" to ensure I understood what would be covered and had an idea of my costs. She was incredibly polite and friendly, over the phone and in person. I don't know if it was because my appointment was first thing in the morning or if it's just the efficient way they do business but I was taken in promptly at my appointment time. As soon as Dr. Field's introduces himself with a handshake and warm smile, I felt my fears start to dissipate. All steps of the procedure were explained in detail without freaking me out. Honestly, the only painful part of the entire event was a coldness test and Dr. Field's even apologized for the Novocain shots, which made me smile (no small feat considering I had hands and a needle in my mouth!) He and his assistant worked together more efficiently than a NASCAR team and in less than half an hour, I was finished. No pain! Now I can't say I would recommend a root canal for the fun of it, but if you have to get one, I highly recommend Dr. Field's and the team at State Endodontics!

Had a great experience here despite the terrible circumstances of dealing with a horribly painful infection related to a failed root canal. They fit me in for a consult the day after my dentist referred me and were straight forward and expedient in booking me for an apicoectomy two days later. I had the procedure with Dr. Hertzberg who did everything he could to make the experience as comfortable as possible. The staff were kind and professional. 12 hours later I felt much, much better. Definitely will return here if something like this ever happens again but fingers crossed i won't have to.

I've had two root canals with them -- one scheduled, and one emergency. Both times, they were compassionate and skilled. A root canal sounds awful, but I was genuinely comfortable throughout both procedures and didn't even need OTC pain medication afterwards (just some bite sensitivity which was nothing compared to what I was feeling before that second procedure!) Prices are fair and clearly communicated beforehand.

Had an appointment for Monday for a root canal. Called the emergency number late Saturday evening in excruciating pain. Dr Fields answered the phone on the third ring and gave me excellent advice on how to use my medications so that I would make it to Monday. Root Canal took 20 minutes - no pain. Slight ache the next day but that was it. I could not be more pleased with my experience at State Endodontics!
