On May 6, 2021 I had a consultation with a periodontist at the Florida Dental Centers where I had my teeth cleaned two weeks earlier. He advised me to have a deep cleaning which required two appointments (left and right side) lasting up to one and half hours each and would require numbing. Unfortunately they were fully booked until mid July. I called a number of dentists in my insurance network and finally got an appointment a few days later with Dr. James W. Felch at the St. Petersburg Dental Studio. I gave him the email address of the dental clinic that had recently taken my x-rays. They would only release them to another dentist. In any case he said he would waive them. His young hygienist, Chloe, took the x-rays and upon examination remarked that this was going to be an easy job as most of the work had recently been done. She worked on my teeth for about twenty minutes, mostly polishing them. Dr. Felch then came in to ask what the Florida Dental Center was going to charge. I told him two appointments each for $149. I went to the front desk to settle the account. The fee was $400! I asked how he could justify such a large fee for twenty minutes work most of which was polishing. He explained that deep cleaning is an expensive procedure describing it in dental jargon that I didn't understand. He also factored in the cost of education and training for the job. I told him that the hygienist said she did not do a deep cleaning to which he immediately responded "she shouldn't have said that". He then dropped the fee to $300. I ended up paying $161. I am now disputing this charge especially after learning that he has filed an insurance claim for $609.

The staff is wonderful! SPDS staff are attentive, kind, and professional. The office setting is quite peaceful for dental services. I have been very happy with the services rendered. The office is in a great location as well with picturesque views of Sunken Gardens outside the windows. Having calming music it feels more like a spa than any dental office I have ever been in. I recommend stopping in to make an appointment. They do take most insurances and they also have an in-house dental plan for those that do not have dental insurance.
