Dr. Bruce Spink graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1977. He then attended The University of Alabama School of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 1981. Dr. Spink has been serving patients in the Over the Mountain area in Birmingham for over 30 years. Hundreds of hours of continuing education each year keeps Dr. Spink among an elite class of dentists providing exceptional restorative and cosmetic dentistry. He is a member of the Birmingham District Dental Society, The Alabama Dental Association, The American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Since 2009, Dr. Spink expanded his practice to include treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. Dr. Spink has attended seminars in cities all over the country, such as Seattle, Orlando, New York City, and Chicago, devoting countless hours of continuing education studying Oral Appliance Therapy for sleep disorders. Dr. Spink is now one of Alabamas leading advocates of sleep apnea treatment using Oral Appliance Therapy. He is currently the only dental sleep professional in Alabama to be qualified to administer the DNA appliance. Dr. Spink is a serving member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Spink is married to his high school sweetheart, Laura, and has two daughters, Natalie and Meredith, five granddaughters, and two step-grandsons. When he is away from the office he enjoys photography, sports, and vacationing with friends and family.

Valeria has been working with since 1995. During the last 25 years, she has taken a special interest in helping our patients understand the importance of healthy hygiene and giving options on how to have an aesthetically beautiful smile. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, decorating cakes, spending time with her husband Tom, their dog Fenway, and her four nephews.

After being in the dental field since 2001, Tanya has gained deep insight into the value of patient communication and relieving patient anxiety. Our patients have benefited greatly from her experience in chair-side assisting and her knowledge of cosmetic dentistry. She also added Dental Hygienist to her resume in 2015. Tanya enjoys world travel and being with her family and friends.

Shannon was excited to join Spink Dentistry as our Office Coordinator in 2015. You will most likely be greeted by her smile as you first enter our practice. She can assist you with any questions or insurance needs. Shannon has worked in all areas of dentistry since 1990. She is married to her husband, Lee, and they have two great boys, Trey and Tucker. In her spare time, she loves to be with her family and enjoys hiking, camping, and being at the lake! We are excited to have her on board with us and love the enthusiasm she adds to our office!

Dental sleep medicine is a concentration of Dr. Spinks, who is a member of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM)

Snoring occurs when the soft tissue structures of the upper airway collapse and vibrate during sleep, producing the sound known as snoring. While snoring alone is not a major medical concern, it may be an indication of a more serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The prevalence of sleep apnea increases with age and it is estimated that as many as 50% of senior men and women may suffer from the disorder. OSA can be exacerbated by obesity.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common of the sleep-related breathing disorder. Patients who suffer from OSA stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, caused by a blockage of the airway that occurs when the soft tissue in the back of the mouth collapses. Over time, the interruption in the flow of oxygen as a result of the blocked airway sets the stage for an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension.

Diagnosing and treating OSA early can help patients restore their health and get a better nights sleep. Dr. Spink looks for the oral signs of sleep apnea during routine dental exams and works with patients to identify their unique risk factors for this and other health concerns.

I have suffered from Sleep Apnea for many years and I have tried, without any success, to wear the three CPAP machines I have had during this time. It finally began to take its toll on me this year. Treatment for OSA will vary based on the individual diagnosis.
