Our talented prosthodontists, periodontist and general dentist are only part of the equation at SDNJ. The entire team is devoted to providing the best dental experience possible while giving you the highest level of care. We have two full-time registered dental hygienists who are here for more than just cleaning your teeth. They can help diagnose issues and work with our dentists to give you specialized care.
We also have a prosthodontic assisting team that has a wealth of knowledge about dental procedures. They can educate patients about dental health and the treatment options available. After dental school, Dr. Courey completed four years of prosthodontic training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center and an additional four years of advanced implant training at NYU.
According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 'Extensive training and experience provide prosthodontists with a special understanding of the dynamics of a smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth and creation of tooth replacements.' Missing or imperfect teeth due to trauma, decay or diseases can be replaced with beautiful, long-lasting, functional teeth.

Dr. Nicholas A. Diaz, originally from Staten Island, New York has settled in Middlesex County, NJ. His passion for dentistry started at a young age. He was fascinated by his childhood dentist who was personable, kind, and helpful within the community. Dr. Diaz was specifically recruited to join Specialized Dentistry of New Jersey because of his reputation for being a meticulous and conscientious general dentist.
Dr. Diaz earned his Bachelors degree at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. During his summers, he worked for a youth nonprofit organization in New York City. He continued his education and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry in Richmond, VA. Throughout his experience in dental school, his passion for dentistry continued to grow especially as he served underprivileged communities while participating in the Virginia Mission of Mercy Projects and The Jamaica Project. One of Dr. Diazs greatest experiences was traveling to Jamaica and providing dental care to individuals who had no access to care.
After graduation, Dr. Diaz completed a General Practice Residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ where he worked alongside some of New Jerseys top dental providers spanning all fields of dentistry. During his residency he became proficient in the areas of Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Crown and Bridge, working with medically compromised patients, and providing comprehensive care. He is committed to a lifetime of learning and has a pair of publications in The Journal of Dental Education. In addition, he is an Invisalign provider while also being an active member of The American Dental Association (ADA), New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA), Middlesex County Dental Society (MCDS), Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, and Representative for Middlesex County New Dentist Council.
After serving patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife, and their yellow Labrador Retriever, Stella. They are very passionate about spending time with family, traveling, cooking, and being outdoors. He is a sports enthusiast and a proud supporter of New York sport teams.
Dr. Diaz centers his work on providing the ultimate patient experience. He treats his patients like family and his patient-centered care philosophy makes him one of the best general and family dentists in Manalapan.
Dedicating his education to dentistry, Dr. Richard Mercurio received his doctorate of dental surgery from Georgetown University. In 1989, he began a Maxi Course in Oral Implantology and fell in love with this speciality, even taking his ongoing education to Sweden for an Advanced Implant training course (surgical and prosthetic). Eventually finding his way to Monmouth, NJ.
Dr. Mercurio then focused his efforts on developing resources and training for the dental community providing a number of publications and lectures on his specialty. All the while, continuing to further his education at institutions such as New York University and The Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry in New York.
In addition to his ongoing education, Dr. Mercurio has served as an Officer of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) over the past five years. He is an Honored Fellow of the AAID and had previously served as president of the organization. He is currently a Director for the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation in Chicago.

'NO MORE LOOSE TEETH AND NO MORE PAIN, AND MY NEW TEETH LOOK AND FEEL REAL. I CAN SMILE, AND I CAN EAT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. I had an upper denture and some implants on the bottom, a broken bridge with missing teeth, and not much bone on my upper arch. I wanted implants all around the top, and nobody wanted to do it. I was told it couldnt be done. I found information on the internet about fixed-in teeth, and I went to see Dr. Mercurio. He found a solution. Dr. Mercurio was easy to work with and very understanding. He has compassion as a doctor, and he walks you through the procedure so that you understand what is going to happen. He is honest and has a passion for doing the work right. He did not take any shortcuts. When I had the surgery and bone graft, Dr. Mercurio and his office staff called to see how I was doing while I was going through the healing process. Everyone is professional, pleasant and happy. And they take extreme pride in their work. There were no surprises except that my teeth came out perfect. No more loose teeth and no more pain, and my new teeth look and feel real. I have been seeing Dr. Courey. For several years now. The doctor as well as the staff are amazing. He has taken care of my dental needs to my complete satisfaction. Dawn, Lois and the entire staff go over and above to communicate clearly politely and professionally. I could not recommend them more.

I had a full mouth dental implants. For what it was it was an excellent experience ,the staff was great always concerned about my comfort. Dr Courey was great. When I first went to Dr Courey I had terrible fear of what was going to happen. Instead Dr Courey and his staff were just wonderful made me feel at easy with the process. He explained what was going to happen, giving me options and suggesting. He and his staff makes you feel like your the only patient they have. I would recommend them to anyone who needs a dentist for any reason. If I could have I would haven giving them 10 stars.

Dr. James Courey and the team at Specialized Dentistry of New Jersey are the best of the best. They genuinely care about their patients, and it shows. After enduring a string of less than adequate dentists, I realized I needed to find a top shelf, world class prosthodontist like Dr. C. to help me restore my smile, and my confidence. We began our journey together in the Spring of 2021 and now, 35 visits and 18 months later, I feel so blessed and grateful I found this remarkable man and his incredible staff. His unflappable attention to detail and comforting demeanor made going to Manalapan pleasurable and memorable. You may have to travel further than you would like to enjoy his incredible expertise, but it's worth the trip!

Professional, dedicated to solving the client's dental issues. In a word. real people making a difference in dentistry for people. Friendly and always going the extra mile - great listeners who deeply care. Recently, I moved to Brooklyn but return to Specialized Dentistry via NJT even to get my teeth cleaned. Over the years, my mouth is full of the results of their dental care. I am not willing to leave this relationship for a more convenient situation. They are over the top - the best....

The worst dental work ever had, He did some feelings for me that are rough, He left open spaces in my tooth between the filling and the tooth. I will never go back there, I need to have all the work redone

On vacation last week my 6 unit bridge fell out into the ocean! I found Dr Courey on Google. If you are going through a bad time the best you can hope for sometimes is to just be surrounded by great and caring people. Well..... I hit the jackpot. From the first photo call speaking with dawnwho was so kind and accommodating. Walking in for the first time the staff acted like they knew me personally. Offered coffee or water. Christina spent time with me going over my dental and medical history. She took moment's to get to know me personally and was so professional and friendly. Meeting Dr Courey for tthe first time was an honor He exudes layers of kindness, perfectionism, and went out of his way to accommodate me . He did not want me to go into Thanksgiving with no teeth in the front so he squeezed me into the busy schedule after he brilliantly came up with a short term plan for me to have teeth. Chrissy scheduled me in with compassion and smiles. Dr Courey brought a couple of his "right hand" people in to meet me so they would know what the plan was His office is literally a well oiled machine that functions so cohesively. Karen and Shannon' took great care of me on my second visit. Shannon was cool. Calm and collected while preparing the impressions and worked with great skill while conversing and exuded compassion. I have had dental anxiety my whole adult life and they made me feel like family. I never felt judged for poor dental health

Although my mom lives in Queens, I will continue to pick her up there and drive her here to see Dr. Courey for her cleanings and denture check-ups and maintenance. Dr. Courey, Cristina and everyone at the office is knowledgeable, professional and friendly. My elderly mom's issues were taken care of with the utmost care. The process, materials and costs were discussed thoroughly as the work progressed. My questions were answered and instructions were given clearly.

Visited for Zoom teeth whitening. Had such a wonderful experience with Adrianna - she was so sweet and very thorough. It was such a relaxing treatment and my teeth came out sparkling white! I was even able to get trays made to be able to do teeth whitening touch ups at home once needed. Highly recommend.

Wonderful! I took my daughter here for her TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction). From the minute we walked in, the front desk woman, Chrissy was so welcoming - already putting my daughter at ease. While we were filling out the paperwork, Chrissy provided us with water and offered snacks! She was quite entertaining and very social. A great personality for the front desk! Then Shannon assisted us and she was as equally pleasant as Chrissy. Dr. Diaz's consultation lasted for over 40 minutes. He was so thorough as he explained the difference between TMJ and TMD. He took time to answer all of our questions and my daughter is actually returning there to have the proper mouth guard made. He also took the time to explains some exercises and stretches that can help relieve some of the tension that she experiences. Overall, I would give this practice an A++ and I highly recommend them to anyone! Donna M.

I am so excited. For 20 years I went to a dentist in New York City. Once Covid hit and I was staying in New Jersey I was really concerned about finding a dental practice that matched the experience I had before. I was talking to my chiropractor who suggested that I visit this practice. I am beyond myself. They are all professional, knowledgeable, communicate very well and are such a pleasure to be with. This week I had my appointment with one of their dental hygienists, Arianna. I have a complicated dental situation. Over the years I've had last lots of work. Working with a new person made me feel vulnerable. Arianna was easy, relaxed and so knowledgeable. It was such a pleasure to be with her. I'm so grateful to have found this practice.

Absolutely the best!! If I could give them 100 stars I would !! A friend of mine recommended Specialized Dentistry to me after I was told I needed dental implants. I had broken posts on my 2 upper teeth, tmj and misaligned bite. I felt like a mess. I literally walked around with 2 loose front teeth for close to a year. I had nightmares of my teeth falling out and was just devastated. Right from the beginning Dawn was so kind and helped set up a consultation for me. Dr. Courey spent over an hour with me reviewing my situation. He is knowledgeable, patient and thorough. He really took the time to explain my treatment plan to me. After he fixed my post and crowns I started my Invisalign treatment. Dr Diaz is a perfectionist and has made the process so easy. He also does Botox! I look refreshed, natural and definitely not over done! Recently I had a cleaning with Arianna and she was great as well. So gentle and friendly. I'm hoping after all I won't end up needed implants but if I do I'm in good hands !! I honestly don't know where I'd be without them. I am forever grateful to the doctors and the entire staff.

I just moved to Manalapan. This was my first appointment with Specialized and I have to say that it was a very pleasant visit. I was greeted by Chrissy and that was a great start as she made me feel at home immediately. . She was very helpful and provided me with all the necessary information that I needed as their patient.. After I left my first appointment I did not feel that I was a new patient but a patient that was long standing with them. I was assigned to Ariana as my Hygienist. I have to say the examination she game me was so thorough and informative that she made it very easy and relaxing appointment. In all my years I never had an exam as she performed on me today. She pointed out a number of ways I could help maintain a healthy dental life. She also made me feel like a long time patient instead of a new patient. I hope she will continue to be my Hygienist from this point on. I met Dr Diaz and he was very gracious and friendly and I am looking forward in maintaining a good relationship with him and the staff. I believe that Chrissy, Ariana, and Dr Diaz are great assets to the Specialized family and I am very happy that I chose them for my dental health.

Whatever I say, I can never say enough about this office. They are accommodating, professional and miracle workers! I had a very gummy smile and felt very conscious about it right before my wedding. I called Specialized Dentistry of NJ and after my consultation they fit me right into their schedule to make sure I had the smile I dreamed of. Dr. Corey did a gingivectomy and was so kind and gentle throughout the procedure. My gums healed within a week! I now have an amazing smile and feel more confident and beautiful than I ever did before. Thank you to the team and Dr. Corey for making my dream smile come true!!!
