Dr. Joshua Sun and Dr. Bryan Kalish are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology a feat accomplished by less than 1% of all dentists in the United States. Dr. Sun brings a wealth of periodontal training with him to Las Cruces. A native of China, he graduated from Zhejiang University with honors. He then went on to attend dental school at Zhejiang University receiving his doctorate of medicine in dentistry and masters of science in oral maxilofacial surgery. During dental school, his interests gravitated toward oral pathology and research, leading him to received his Ph.D in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Shanghai Second Medical University. He came to the United States for his Postdoctoral Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. As agraduate resident at Loma Linda University in California his passion for peridontology took off, leading him to become an associate professor in the school's Department of Periodontics.
Dr. Sun moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2015 where he practiced as a Periodontist forfour years until convinced to call Las Cruces his home and join Implant and Laser Periodontal Surgery Center in October 2019. His advanced education in oral surgery and dental implants allow him toutilize cutting-edge technology and techniques for the benefit of his patients.
Since joining our practice in 2008, Dr. Kalish 's lifelong mission has been to inspire every patient to desire, achieve, and maintain optimum oral and systemic health. In addition to being a visionary in providing outstanding patient experiences and clinical outcomes, he served for 20 years on active duty in the US Army and retired as a highly decorated full-bird colonel. He is a #1 international best-selling author TWICE on Amazon thanks to his books for patients - 'A Reason to Smile: Fixing Broken Confidence with Cosmetic Dentistry' and 'Smile! Creating Healthy and Beautiful Smiles with Cosmetic Dentistry' - which was shared across the country on CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX and many other news outlets including the El Paso Times. Dr Kalish specializes in the placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth, bone and soft tissue grafting, laser and cosmetic periodontal surgery.
As a former instructor in both periodontal & implant surgery, Dr Kalish brings a wealth of knowledge and clinical expertise to the El Paso dental community. In an ongoing effort to seek out the latest advancements available, he attends dental continuing education courses annually. While he enjoys demonstrating and teaching the most cutting-edge surgical techniques at numerous educational seminars around the world, he is most passionate about working with other dentists in the Southwestern United States so our patients continue to receive only the highest quality of dental care available anywhere in the world.
Dr. Kalish attended the Six-Year Combined BA/DDS program at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). He finished both college and dental school in only six years as compared to the normal eight years while training alongside some of the brightest students from around the world. While serving in the Army, he practiced general dentistry for four years before deciding that dental implants and periodontal surgery would become his life-long pursuit. Outside the United States, he has practiced dentistry in: Thailand, Korea, Mongolia, Germany, Italy, and Iraq in addition to travelling to almost 40 countries.
Coming from a family with strong military ties, he is a third-generation US Army war veteran after his father (Vietnam) and both grandfathers (WWII). His great uncle - Lawrence 'Uncle Lawr' F. O 'Neill - became a WWII American Fighter Ace after shooting down five enemy aircraft (four the same day) over the Pacific and was awarded the Distinguish Service Cross. His maternal grandfather, Thomas Sheerin, was awarded three bronze stars in WWII. Two of Dr. Kalish 's younger brothers also earned US Army officer commissions.
Dr. Kalish is a Distinguished Military Graduate from the US Army's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at UMKC. After graduating from dental school, he went on to serve with the elite US Army Special Forces - deploying five humanitarian missions to Asia as the only dentist assigned to the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). Later in his career, he deployed to Camp Taji just north of Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the United States Forces - Iraq Theater Periodontist for over 100,000 Service Members from all branches in Southwest Asia from 2009-2010.
At the age of 39, he became one of the youngest Army officers promoted to the rank of full-bird colonel in the last sixty years after being promoted early to major and colonel. He last assignment was serving as the Chief of Dental Policy of the US Army Dental Directorate. During his final four years in the Army, he oversaw policy and clinical operations of one of the largest group dental practices on the planet with more than 130 dental treatment facilities across the world responsible for treating over 500,000 Active Duty Soldiers and another 500,000 National Guard and Reserve Soldiers when activated.

Very professional office and excellent waiting room with coffee, and water. Staff called me back to schedule an appointment. An exam was scheduled the same day to get a status of my periodontal health by Dr. Sun. The assistant who took my x-rays was very pleasant and per the results, I was in good status moving forward to get cleanings done in the future with their office. I would highly recommend this dental care office per your needs as my dad was an endodontist for 25 yrs.

What can I say? Dr. Carrillo is not only competent but caring and thoughtful. She called me the night before 1 tooth extraction, sent a get well package with soup and tea and will call me to follow up. All my uppers will come out in a couple of weeks. I am totally comfortable in my choice of Southwest!!!

As someone who is comfortable with the fact that oral health is vitally important but also has high levels of anxiety when having to deal with oral health issues, I have to say that Dr. Bauerle and his associates are among the very best. I have had to visit Southwest Periodontal more than once for a complicated oral health issue. I have found that, in a multitude of ways, Dr. Bauerle and his staff have gone above and beyond to ensure that I received quality care and comfort well beyond what I have come to expect. Exceptional levels of care, high levels of professionalism, modern techniques and tools, fantastic bedside manner, and a sense that your needs really matter are just a few things that I have come to appreciate in visiting Southwest Periodontal. I can also say that Dr. Carillo has attended to me when Dr. Bauerle has not been in office and she is excellent as well, though I would expect nothing less from this practice. Additionally, I have found all of the staff to be extraordinarily helpful at every turn. In all, feel at ease and confident that you are in good hands if you find yourself visiting Southwest Periodontal.

Painless! I have very bad anxiety when it comes to dentists. This experience was wonderful. He was very gentile and I had no pain at all. Very pleased with the experience. I highly recommend him and his staff to anyone needing dental surgery. Plus today as I was home recuperating I heard a knock on my door...it was a delivery from his office. A gift with a bow which included a soup bowel with a can of chicken soup and crackers. What a sweet gesture!
