Dr. Kelly Hughes was born and raised in Augusta, GA, and has been in private practice in the Augusta and North Atlanta areas since 2005. She graduated with a bachelors degree from Georgia College and State University, and completed her dental and advanced pediatric dental training at the Medical College of Georgia (now known as Augusta University) in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Dr. Hughes is passionate about providing quality dental care to children and strives to provide a tailored experience for each patient. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and continues to further her education by attending courses and seminars pertaining to the field of pediatric dentistry. She maintains active memberships with the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and various other local dental societies.
Dr. Jennifer R. Bates is excited to practice dentistry in the same community she grew up in. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in Microbiology (2009), she spent some time working in Charleston, SC. She then returned to Augusta to attend the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University, where she completed her dental and advanced pediatric dental training in 2021.
As a pediatric dentist, Dr. Bates pays special attention to each childs needs, treating them with the compassion and care that they deserve. She is looking forward to forming lasting relationships with her patients based on trust, kindness, and compassion. She wants every child to be excited about coming back for a visit!

We love taking our kids here for dentist care! The staff is so friendly and they know how to make our children feel comfortable. We have seen both Dr. Jennifer Bates and Dr. Kelly Hughes and they are both wonderful. Could not recommend this place more!

I had a very bad experience at southern smiles today.I was told that I was not allowed to go back with my daughter while she gets a needle stuck in her mouth. I was told they don't recommend parents going back with kids even tho I see parents back there all the time.Some reason I couldn't go back with my daughter and my time was wasted coming here today. I'm unsure if she was actually gonna get treatment done to her mouth or if they were running some kind of insurance scam. It depends on who you are and what you look like they will let you go back there SMh so sad

My sons first time at a dentist and he absolutely loved it here. They are so kind and explains everything they are doing. 100% hands down the best pediatric dentist in csra.

I cannot recommend this Dentist office enough. Dr Hughes is a professional, and keeps you informed every step of the way. The staff is also amazing. My daughter has asked to go back to the dentist several times after her appointments.

Could not recommend this office more! One of my daughter's has major anxiety and all appts usually go south fast. All office staff handled her with care, made her feel beyond comfortable & safe, and explained everything they were doing to not just me but also my daughter (which made all the difference in the world.) Both of my daughters are now being treated at Southern Smiles and we couldn't be happier. I could go on for days about each staff member individually if Google allowed that many characters. They are THE best!!

Both my Daughters had wonderful experiences at this Dentist office, even though they were there for tooth discomforts. My youngest Daughter has a huge fear of Dentist offices because of issues in the past (from another place), but felt comfortable enough on her very first visit to go back by herself! From the front desk staff, the Dentist herself & her Assistants, to the "billing department"; I highly recommend them!

My 2 year old daughter did so awesome! She sat in the chair by herself and let the hygienist, Lani polish and floss her teeth. She even got her 1st set of xrays! Dr. Hughes is amazing and was so great with my daughter. We love going to the dentist and wouldn't go anywhere else!!

I love this dentist. She is so amazing with children. She came in, talked with my son and made him feel comfortable before doing anything to him. Amy was awesome as well, she took the time to explain to a 4 year old what she was doing. That takes a lot of time and patience. My son was nervous in the beginning, but left not wanting to leave. That's the way it should be. Dentistry, especially pediatrics is not easy by far, but they make it seem like a walk in the park.

Southern Smiles was absolutely incredible! Every employee we came in contact with made us feel like family. My daughter has talked about both the hygienist and dentist all afternoon!

We absolutely love Southern Smiles!!! My autistic son has been going to Southern Smiles since he was 5 years old and it has always been a positive experience and atmosphere. I was worried when I made the first appointment for my son because the transition to new places was already such a trying and difficult adventure for him. I thought, he is going to freak out with x-rays and drills. I just knew we would have to hold him down or he would run. Much to my surpise, it was one of the most positive experiences we have had with any type of medical office. He didn't feel scared or overstimulated and I contribute that to the calm way in which the staff spoke to him and transitioned him from one room to the next. They made my son feel comfortable. From check in to check out, the staff and Dentist are amazing!
