This specialty is specifically designed to treat the supporting bone and tissue around the teeth and the placement of dental implants. Graduates complete three years of additional training beyond dental school and receive complete training in IV sedation and advanced bone grafting techniques. Substantial time is used for the coordination and collaboration of cases with Restorative Dentists and Prosthodontists. This allows your Periodontist to have a full understanding of the final dental prosthesis. This is similar in concept to the way there is a blueprint to follow for the building of a foundation for a house.
Dr. Hulgan is a native of Albertville, Alabama and a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College. He completed a Masters in Public Health and dental school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Following dental school, Dr. Hulgan finished a three-year program to receive specialty training in Periodontics. Dr. Hulgan maintains an adjunct faculty position at the UAB School of Dentistry.
Dr. Hulgan and his wife, Tara, have lived in Birmingham since 2004 and have one daughter, Mary Garner. Outside of the office, he enjoys running and maintains a lifelong passion for music in the form of guitar.

Dr. Hulgan and his team are amazing! They made sure I stayed as comfortable as possible during the whole procedure and answered any questions that I had. Southern Periodontics really did an amazing job and went well above and beyond for me. I am very grateful and highly recommend them!

I cannot say enough about Dr. Hulgan and his staff. I had an issue removing a healing cap from a molar. My dentist and another oral surgeon had tried to remove the cap without success and I had almost given up. Dr. Hulgan removed the cap in short order with no pain whatsoever. As happy as I was that it was removed, I was so impressed with how friendly and caring all of the folks at his practice were to me. He was simply incredible! I highly recommend his practice if you need periodontic care

Dr. Hulgan and his staff are very welcoming and professional. His office is a very clean and friendly atmosphere. Our daughter had a procedure done after her braces were removed and the service was excellent! We highly recommend Southern Periodontics!

I cannot say enough about how great my experience was with Dr. Hulgan and his staff. Brittany and Tanya were extremely helpful and professional at the front desk. Dr. Hulgan and his assistant Sydney were incredible - it seemed as if they had been working together for years. I was nervous going into my gum surgery, but it went great. The procedure went very smooth and was surprisingly quick. I had little to no pain afterwards and have been so pleased with the results, my smile already looks so much better! I highly recommend Dr. Hulgan and his office to anyone in need of a skilled and personable periodontist.

I had recently had skin grafts for gum recession. The process went incredibly well. The recovery went well! Just as described. Dr. Hulgan is extremely thorough, caring, and supportive. He and his staff did an amazing job with my gums and the whole experience. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually a lot better.

Dr. Hulgan and his staff are absolutely amazing! I've had 2 procedures done by him and it was a great experience. Dr. Hulgan is so down to earth, very easy to talk to, and will answer any questions or concerns you have regarding whatever you're having done with him. We had a great experience with Dr. Hulgan. My daughter was anxious about the procedure, and he talked her through it and made sure she was at ease. She left thinking mouth surgery was no big deal! And Dr. Hulgan called the next morning to check on her, something appreciated by all patients and parents. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Hulgan and Souther Periodontics.

I followed all his advice and instructions and seemed to sail through with great success. Receding gums are just not an appearance problem but a real health issue to your heart, lungs and can lead to tooth loss. I look forward to allowing Dr. Hulgan to maintain my healthy gums and highly recommend him and his expertise sewing abilities for this or any other procedures. Thanks again :)
