This specialty is specifically designed to treat the supporting bone and tissue around the teeth and the placement of dental implants. Graduates complete three years of additional training beyond dental school and receive complete training in IV sedation and advanced bone grafting techniques. Substantial time is used for the coordination and collaboration of cases with Restorative Dentists and Prosthodontists. This allows your Periodontist to have a full understanding of the final dental prosthesis. This is similar in concept to the way there is a blueprint to follow for the building of a foundation for a house.
Dr. Hulgan is a native of Albertville, Alabama and a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College. He completed a Masters in Public Health and dental school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Following dental school, Dr. Hulgan finished a three-year program to receive specialty training in Periodontics. Dr. Hulgan maintains an adjunct faculty position at the UAB School of Dentistry.
Dr. Hulgan and his wife, Tara, have lived in Birmingham since 2004 and have one daughter, Mary Garner. Outside of the office, he enjoys running and maintains a lifelong passion for music in the form of guitar.

The staff here are SO wonderful and patient. I had to have a procedure done today and they talked me through the entire thing. At my consultation a few weeks ago they told me everything I would need to expect regarding the procedure, payments, and recovery. 10/10 experience and staff!

I was referred to Dr. Hulgan by my dentist for gum recession. I was very nervous about the procedure but Dr. Hulgan and his staff were great. They explained everything in great detail and and put my mind to ease about the procedure. I can not say enough good things about this office. I would highly recommend!

I was referred to Dr. Hulgan. I made my appointment with Brittany the office staff. I asked exactly what the process was to the appointment or charge for the consultation. She said that Dr. Hulgan would do a consultation and never mentioned a charge or insurance! After I am done with my consultation...I am charged with a consultation fee. Was not expecting the fee or fee charged! Dr. Hulgan/ office staff, please do a better job of letting new customers know about consultation charges!

I can only praise Southern Periodontists for their care. Dr Coty Hulgen is the best. He had to skin graft my gum and it came out so good. Cannot tell by looking at it that I ever had a problem. If ever I need periodontal services again, he is the only one I will trust with my smile . His staff are so caring and friendly. Thanks to all of you!

Dr. Coty and staff provided an incredibly professional and enjoyable experience during my recent gum grafting procedure. Extended recession caused my dentist to refer me to Dr. Coty's team and I'm so glad they did. Not many people look forward to mouth surgery but it can sometimes be a necessity to maintain good oral health. My experience with his team was completely positive and I am happy to announce I have beautiful gums to show for it! If necessary, I will certainly be back! Thanks!

If you need a periodontist, this is your place! I had to have gum recession corrected and I was very nervous. Dr. Hulgan and his staff explained the procedure and once we started, they talked me through the process. I was never in pain. They made sure that I felt comfortable at all times. While there was some mild pain that evening and day two, as long as I followed their instructions, I was fine! Thank you so much for making this an easy process with a wonderful outcome!

He is a very great periodontist. I was having a lot of anxiety just anticipating the procedure that I was having done (gum recession which needed a graft). He and his staff could tell I was nervous and started asking me how I was and making sure I felt no pain and was doing ok. He had started the procedure and was telling me every step of the work he was doing always checking and making sure I was ok. I have had great success with my procedure and wouldn't think twice about going back if the need arises. He and all of his staff is very knowledgeable and have always been very nice and friendly. I would highly recommend them.

I was a new patient but the atmosphere from the second you walk in is terrific. The sweet lady that greeted me was so kind, it was like she was inviting me to lunch on her big Southern back porch! I sure didnt expect to be SO comfortable on my first visit. The whole atmosphere was special....even in the waiting room people talked to one another.
