We are Southern Dental Birmingham, a family and cosmetic dental practice located in Birmingham near Highway 280 and Inverness. Our team members and dentists are well-trained, professional and experienced in creating a comfortable environment for all of our patients. We provide a variety of services including general cleanings, teeth whitening, dental implants, partials, dentures, crowns, bridges, root canals and other treatments.
Our waiting rooms include TVs, magazines and toys for children. We create a welcoming environment for all of our patients making patient satisfaction a priority and encouraging our patients to share their experience with us and others in the Birmingham, Alabama, community.
Murphy Maddox, DMD Dr. Murphy Maddox is a firm believer in providing quality care through innovative dentistry in a way that makes patients feel good about themselves. He believes dental visits should never be painful or scary and insists on treating every patient like family. Dr. Maddox graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2016 and attended Samford University as an undergraduate. His unique experience at Samford as a vocal performance major, as well as his long-held belief that he would grow up to be an artist, has allowed him to combine his passion for the aesthetic nature of smile design with efficient hospitality-driven patient care. He has been practicing in the area for over 4 years and strives to further his dental knowledge through continuing education every chance he gets.
Dr. Maddox is part of the Christian Medical Ministry of Alabama and is the chairman of the Board for the Samford School of the Arts. He gained an advanced education in general dentistry through the New York University Lutheran Medical Center, now known as New York University Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, and has had intensive surgical training though a 12-month residency for implants and bone grafting.
Dr. Maddox is one of five children and grew up on a farm outside of Dothan, Alabama. He is an ordained minister and has led music as worship pastor at Riverchase Baptist for the last ten years. He enjoys cooking and spending time outdoors with his beautiful wife, Jade, and their goldendoodle.
Andrew Craft, DMD As a dentist, Dr. Andrew Craft strives to provide high quality care in a friendly and sympathetic manner to all his patients. He graduated from the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1999 and studied as an undergraduate at University of Georgia. Today, he continues his education as frequently as his schedule allows and has been practicing in the Birmingham area for over 20 years. He has received advanced dental training for and is well-versed in oral devices for sleep apnea.
Born in Texas, but having grown up in Oregon, Dr. Craft moved to Alabama at the age of 16 and has loved the South ever since. He is married to his wonderful wife, Julie, and has two boys. Dr. Craft also enjoys mountain biking and spending time with his family.
As a graduate and undergraduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as Auburn University, Dr. Smith continually strives to further his knowledge by completing over 50 hours of continuing education yearly. He has been practicing in the area since 1999 and is part of the International Academy of Sleep. He has also received advanced training for sleep apnea treatment using oral appliances.
He and his wife, Mallory, have been married for more than 20 years and together have one son, Tucker, and two daughters, Ellie and Tanner. He enjoys playing golf, fishing with his son and traveling. Dr. Smith is also a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard and is the base dentist for the 117th Air Refueling Wing here in Birmingham, Alabama.

My first time here was made necessary because I broke a tooth. The solution was a crown, which was done quickly. Those things are never cheap, but they have an in-house program to help with expenses. $295/year. I have been back several times, and it's always been great. They had me back for another emergency broken tooth (this time with insurance!) and Dr Maddox did the least amount necessary to repair the problem. Very efficient and very safe, even during this corona virus. Pleasant experience . I need to add .. Elizabeth is the BEST dental assistant I have ever had! She is gentle, yet thorough. I have sensitive teeth, so I really appreciate that.
