After college I took a job as a scientist at a large company that manufactured many dental and household products. I had significant success with multiple patents for many novel dental inventions. One of those products lead to the launch of a new version of Sensodyne toothpaste in the US and Sensodyne Duo in Europe. Another led to the release of a prescription Stannous Fluoride gel called Vision. Its there when I learned I had a passion and talent for the science of dentistry. Eventually I rose to Senior Scientist but decided to change paths and apply to dental school.
I get to work every day with the greatest group of dedicated staff. Each person works so hard and cares so much for the patients. We hire people who are compassionate and smart. They work hard because they truly believe in what we are doing for our patients.
I want all my patients to have functional teeth for their whole life. I love cosmetics but at the end of the day its about keeping people functional, able to eat their favorite meal when they are 100 years old. Pain free, infection free, thats the ultimate goal.
Likely in the office, at least some of the time. I try to accommodate patient schedules and I never turn away an emergency. Otherwise, we live downtown Saratoga so I love walking on Broadway and around congress park.
Dr. Cara Hernas is a doctor of dental medicine. After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, she moved on to earn her doctorate degree in dental medicine from Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, PA. While in Philadelphia, Dr. Hernas completed her general practice residency at VA Medical Center.

Dr. Branden Marcus is a doctor of dental surgery in New York. Dr. Marcus graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center with a doctorate in dental surgery, then went on to complete his general practice residency at New York Medical College. As a valued team member of Saratoga Springs Family Dentistry, he works with men, women, and children, helping them overcome oral health concerns so they can have a healthy mouth and regular oral care routine.

For the first time ever in my almost 39 years of age, my cavities were successfully removed with no discomfort afterwards and no need to return. One hour after my appointment, I was eating and drinking without a problem. That is unheard of for me! Thank you Dr. Markus, Jackie, Christina, Erin and the entire team - you guys are the real deal!

Dr. Branden Marcus saw me for a dental emergency when no other dentist in the area could fit me in as a new patient. He and the dental assistants were excellent - very knowledgeable, caring and efficient. I had two follow up visits that went unbelievably well. All of the staff were prompt and caring. I highly recommend this group!

I'm so grateful and appreciative of South Glens Falls Family Dentistry. I have lived here all of my life and have been to just about every dentist in the area. Dr Smitkin is by far the best ever! She is gentle, very laid back, understanding and very good at what she does. All the staff there are very nice and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I highly recommend this dentist office!

The people who work here are all outstanding. I am TERRIFIED of having dental work done, and they have managed to get me through some necessary work with a minimum of terror! Carey has been wonderful in helping me with my anxiety and Dr. Smitkin is gentle and reassuring while she works to help me keep my own teeth for the next 30 years of my life! Five star reviews are too few for this business :-)

My husband and I recently moved to the area, and we are so grateful that we found South Glens Falls Family Dentistry!! The office staff, dental hygienists, and Dr. Smitkin are all wonderful! Our first visit was a great experience, and I am thankful that I will continue to get excellent dental care there. I would give more than 5 stars if I could!!

I had a root canal about two years ago by a dentist who maybe should have stopped practicing sooner. Last week one wall of my tooth broke off, I was assuming the worst and would have to extract immediately. Dr. Smitkin was able to see me as soon as possible and placed a temporary fix on the tooth. I was anticipating spending quite a bit but in fact was very reasonably priced. They made me feel comfortable and I could tell the whole practice was very knowledgeable and kind. I was so fortunate to find the South Glens Falls Family Dentistry practice upon my return from out of the area. The couple times I have been a patient....the staff have treated me professionally and with kindness and a ton of care. They have taken the dread out of my appointments by keeping me informed, using up to date procedures and equipment, and playing some sweet music. Carey, Dr. Smitkin, and all the staff are just good people. Kudos from a happy patient.
