I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT and went on to earn my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. I was awarded the Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship, commissioned as Ensign before dental school started and was promoted to Lieutenant upon graduation from dental school.
While serving as a Dental Officer in the U.S. Navy, I completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program that is accredited and recognized by the American Dental Association. After my residency, I served as Department Head and Dental Officer onboard the USS Dubuque, LPD-8 and finished my naval career at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
During my six years of active duty, I was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, qualified as a Surface Warfare Medical Dental Officer, and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, the National Defense medal, and the Global War on Terrorism medal. I am a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and the Northern California Dental Society.
My wife, Hyunjung and I moved to Chico, CA in July 2009. Hyunjung is a member of the faculty at CSU Chico. My wife and I feel blessed to be able to serve Chico, California. We spend our days happily raising our son, Dylan - he's 6 now. My passions are cooking and playing fantasy football.
Shannon and her husband moved from the Bay Area to Chico in 1999 to raise their family. When all three of their children were in school, Shannon decided to go back to school to become a Registered Dental Assistant. She started her internship at South Chico Dental Care in 2011 and was fortunate to continue working with our team after obtaining her license. She feels so blessed to be a part of the wonderful team here at South Chico Dental Care.
Kaela recently earned her degree as a Registered Dental Hygienist and is excited to join the team at South Chico Dental Care. She moved to Chico 10 years ago and feels fortunate to be part of such a friendly and active community. When she's not helping you maintain and improve your oral health you can find her hiking, gardening, and creating artwork.

Simply put, Dr. Surh and his hygentist are the best. I have a HUGE fear of dentists. Dr. Surh is very patient and doesn't make you feel stupid for being scared. I really like his hygentist, she was very kind and made my teeth feel better. They are fair in price. (PS They also have a large TV to watch while you get your work done and a Keurig in the waiting room. You'll be glad you came here, even if you're a coward.

I felt very welcomed at Dr. Surh's office. Everyone on his staff were helpful and friendly. Dr. Suhr and Shannon were not only professional, but informative and personable. Front desk staff are wonderful!

I've been a patient of Dr. Surh for years now. He is very attentive and goes above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and welcome. I've never had a more personable and caring dentist before. During my pregnancy, he took the time to make sure I understood how pregnancy hormones would affect my oral health and gave me great advice on how to take care of my oral hygiene during pregnancy. I 100% recommend Dr. Surh!

Dr. Surh is a fantastic dentist. The staff working at the front desk are kind, courteous, and helpful. The dental hygienists are very professional and the exam rooms at South Chico Dental Care are very clean. They have TVs in them. The TVs greatly reduced my anxiety and gave me something to do while my teeth were being cleaned.

Dr Surh and his office ladies always take phenomenal care of me. Over the last few years, they have brought my teeth and mouth up to full health, and now I can just maintain that health. It's always fun to see everybody, they know me by name, and I always leave there with a bigger smile.

Dr Surh has been my best dental experience thus far! I've taken awful care of my teeth and now that I found Dr Surh, I'm ready to get everything back to health! I got one tooth extracted and he took great care of me. Went ABOVE and BEYOND to make sure my healing went well and my pain stayed low. I appreciate the service and care I received by his staff as well. Very friendly and kind. A dental office that genuinely cares about your dental health is hard to find. This office is a rare find for sure! :)

Dr. Surh and his staff office are gems! After 30 yrs of struggling with maintenance on my teeth, I finally found the one dentist who brought me to 100% and I have been maintaining for the last 2 yrs. They are fast, accomdating, affordable and everything you would hope for in dentistry. Dr. Surh always asks how our family is doing and remembers the name of my husband and son. I love and am grateful for what his office brings to our community. A special thank you to Dr. Surh for his service as well!

I work in the customer service industry so I know what top notch service is and this dentist office has it nailed. I switched to Dr. Surh last year when my previous dentist was terrible. From walking through the front doors here starting with the front desk, to the hygienist, dental assistant, to Dr. Surh the service is incredible! With all the challenges COVID has done on all businesses they haven't skipped a beat. Consistent communication on openings, text messages to remind you of appointments, emails, pricing, appointment times and follow up on dental work done, I'm pleased. This dentist goes out of his way to make sure are pleased with his work and that you leave with the smile you deserve. Highly recommended!! Best dentist I've experienced
