Sonya White - General dentist in Mobile, AL

Dr. White first became interested in dentistry after visiting her own dentist as a child. He made her checkups seem like so much fun and helpful, as she got older, she decided dentistry was the career for her. After graduating dental school at Howard University in Washington, DC she returned to her hometown and fulfilled a dream and worked as an associate in his office before he retired.

She continues her post-graduate training at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute of Advance Dental Studies in Las Vegas, Nevada. By undergoing training, Dr. White consistently achieves the clinical ability that few dentists in the country are even aware exists. She is one of the few LVI dentists in the area. This training has given her extensive knowledge in Cosmetic and Neuromuscular dentistry.

At our office, we offer 3-D Imaging Galileos, this is the latest in technological advances and new diagnostic possibilities. This high tech imaging is used to change the treatment options and help achieve diagnostic success in the treatment of our patients.

In our office, you will find the most 'dazzling smiles' and the warmest personalities waiting to greet you. Our goal and policy is to provide our patients with the highest quality of dentistry available. We strive to be the best and treat our patients as one of our own family members. We have genuine concern for your comfort before, during and after your treatment. Dr. White is also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Mississippi Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, Howard Alumni Dental Association and the American Orthodontic Society.

The most important concern for Dr. White is turning around the patient's perception of dentistry. Patients who have had a negative experience give them a positive one. Patients who have had positive experiences exceed their expectations.

The team at White Smile Center believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons' risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at White Smile Center work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Mobile area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at White Smile Center can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

A. Primary, or 'baby,' teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

A. First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

A. Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

A. Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

A. Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

A. There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Family dentists are a great source of information when it comes to how to properly take care of oral health. They are trained in general dentistry, which makes them experts at helping patients of all ages practice good oral hygiene.Choosing to have a family dentist oversee ones oral health is something many families are deciding

Instead of relying on metal brackets and wires to move teeth, ClearCorrect braces use a series of clear aligners to move teeth into place. The aligners are made of a clear and comfortable plastic that looks similar to a full retainer. By taking care of them and refraining from scratching their surface, aligners will remain clear and virtually invisible when worn. At White Smile Center, we can show you how to keep your aligners in perfect condition during the treatment process.

The aligners are created using an impression of your teeth and gums. Once received, the lab will create a series of aligners that start with the current position of your teeth and slowly move them until they are perfectly straight. A patient will wear each aligner for about four to six weeks. Afterward, the patient will replace the old aligner with the next one in the series. The aligners place pressure on specific teeth to gradually move the teeth for a more comfortable experience. By wearing all of the aligners in the series, your teeth will move from crooked to perfectly straight.

The aligners are given to you at the beginning of the procedure so that you do not have to visit our Mobile dentist office every time that you need to switch them out. This allows you to spend less time in the dental chair than you would when wearing traditional metal braces.

Traditional metal braces are extremely effective for straightening teeth and treating misaligned jaws. While metal braces are more comfortable than they were in the past, they are still noticeable and unfavorable to many. With the wires, brackets, and rubber bands, traditional metal braces can negatively impact the way that a person looks and feels. Many people find that traditional braces are distracting and do not fit into a busy or professional lifestyle.

Simultaneously, metal braces are difficult to keep clean as food can become stuck between the brackets, requiring a special floss to remove the bits of food. At White Smile Center, we can help patients receive the necessary treatment without having to drastically change their diet or skip out on some of their favorite treats when wearing braces. While only temporary, this can be inconvenient and at times, frustrating. Given the tendency for food to become stuck, those wearing braces, also need to spend more time brushing and flossing throughout the day.

ClearCorrect is a far more convenient option than other methods for straightening one's teeth. Patients remove the aligners themselves when eating, so there are no restrictions on which foods you can eat. Patients also do not have to worry about something becoming stuck in the brackets or the embarrassment of feeling awkward while eating. Patients wear ClearCorrect for at least 22 hours per day, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a romantic dinner, business meeting, or lunch without metal braces ruining one's confidence. This makes it possible for patients to maintain their current lifestyle without any further restrictions.
