Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

I strongly recommend avoiding this practice. We went to them for very standard fillings, after confirming that they accepted our insurance. What they didn't mention on the phone was that they were out of network. When we got there they assured us that the fillings were still covered at our normal rate, but that they would just have to take payment up and we would be reimbursed. After they got the money, however, it took them weeks and several phone calls to even submit our claim. When it came back, the reimbursement was only a fraction of what it should have been at the normal rate. When asked about this, they then indicated they had never actually checked with our insurance to find out the rate; they just looked up what the in-network rate was on the insurance website and told us that. After numerous tries, we finally got to speak to the office manager who said they would try to make it right and would call back in a few days. We haven't heard from them since. The upshot is that we paid $600 more for this procedure than we would have if we dealt with an honest business. Big mistake to think that a small local business would put their reputation first.

Fantastic experience! The staff is friendly and professional. My hygienist is a 5 star! The doctor down to earth and easy to talk too. The dentist is always my least favorite place to visit, thank you for a job well done!

This is from Diane Duke. This is an amazing place!!!!! I was on a girl's trip and my gold crown was uncemented at dinner. These wonderful people took pity on an out of state woman to fit her in the next morning to take care of her issue. Everyone there was soooo nice and sweet. The dentist was a cutie pie. He was so professional and informative that I wanted to kidnap the whole office and take them back with me to Maryland. The technician was proficient and no pain. I love these people. The front desk people are so smart because I didn't have my insurance card with me and they were able to find the info they needed to file my claim.

I was there this morning for a teeth cleaning. What a great experience. I use a wheelchair so Dana pushed the super heavy chair forward, repositioned the headrest, and I didn't have to transfer out of my wheelchair. I would go there again in a minute. Sue Schaffer

Highly recommend Smoketown Family Dentistry. This coming from an individual who dreaded going to the dentist and avoided it for years. Friendly staff and an excellent environment. From the front desk staff to the dentist, everyone is incredible. I had an implant here, something I avoided for five years because I thought it would be a painful process. Not the case at all. It went seamless but that is because of all the work they did to make it that way. Smoketown has invested in technology that separates them from other dentist offices I have used in the past and all of it benefits the patients. Grateful to have them here in Lancaster County and can not recommend them enough.

As soon was you walk in you are greeted by very friendly staff. They take covid precautions seriously. The office is very clean. Overall this was the best experience I have ever had at the dentist. The staff are amazing and knowledgeable. They offer patient education and are great at explaining everything you need to know. It's easy to get a appointment that fits your schedule, since they offer evening appts and some Saturday's. The quality of their work is top notch.

The staff here are awesome! Had a tooth removed maybe two weeks ago and came in later just to make sure it was good. Way better than those other places that treat you like a number. Highly recommend this place :)!
