Smith & Smith Orthodontics

One of the primary reasons I went into the field of orthodontics was that I had the opportunity to see what a positive impact my father, Dr. Lynn Smith, had on the many people he treated. It is such an honor to be able to provide a meaningful service to so many in our community.

In our practice we believe that each patient is important, and that the pathway to a successful outcome starts with excellent diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment delivery. We work hard to build relationships with our patients so we understand their goals, and we also work hard to educate patients and their parents about the orthodontic process.

For prospective orthodontic patients today, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction.Advertising and marketing can muddle the waters and make it difficult to understand what orthodontics is all about.I take patient education very seriously, and we strive to ensure that our patients are aware of all of their treatment options so that together we can make good, informed decisions.

I completed my orthodontic residency at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I obtained my certificate in orthodontics and Master of Science. My masters thesis examined types of rigid fixation and its influence on long-term skeletal stability with orthognathic surgery. This research has been published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

After finishing my orthodontic residency at UNC, I completed the additional work to become a board-certified orthodontist. This required many additional hours of case preparation, oral and written exams, and case presentation to a panel of examiners with the American Board of Orthodontists.I am proud to say that I received board certification in 2012 and maintain that certification today.

Continuing education is critical to stay current with new advances in the field of orthodontics. Access to current research and new clinical practices can lead to improved outcomes, with better treatment efficiency and effectiveness.

My patients are a diverse group, with unique needs and goals. In order to provide such a high level of individualized treatment, we have to be skilled in a variety of different techniques and treatment modalities. While this presents many challenges, I feel we would be doing our patients a disservice if we did not strive to be at the forefront of the many diverse current orthodontic techniques.

My wifeJanand I have been blessed with three children:Ginny, Mary Thomas, and Will. My free time is spent with my family or outdoors where I enjoy mountain biking and running. And during basketball season we support the Tar Heels with great enthusiasm.

I believe it is important to be active in the local community and supportive of our patients as they pursue their many endeavors. For me, that takes the form of teaching Sunday school at St. Luke United Methodist Church, coaching youth soccer and basketball, participating as a board member with the Sanford Area Soccer League, and giving talks at local elementary schools about oral hygiene and diet. I am hopeful that these activities will help our young people live healthier and happier lives.

For the past 40 years, I have had the great opportunity to practice orthodontics and change the lives of children and adults in my community. This opportunity has helped me grow in the awareness of those around me, and enabled me to reach out to those in need.

The intricacies of modern orthodontics are a challenge, but my passion is to providea very meaningful service to my patients. The challenge of providing a mutually agreed-upon treatment plan and motivating patients, particularly adolescents, to do the things that are necessary to achieve an ideal smile is sometimes daunting. It is my goal to be sensitive to those individual needs and expectations andarrive at a successful outcome:a truly amazing smile.

I received all of my college education at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where I earnedmy Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1964 and my Master of Science in orthodontics in 1972. Since then, I have been actively involved in continuing education to keep abreast of the many changes and advances in orthodontic technology and innovation.

With the exception of my military service in the United States Air Force, I have spent my entire life in North Carolina. Ive spent the past 40 years right here in Sanford, where Ive enjoyed living, working, and raising my family. My wife Jane and I were blessed with three children:Jennifer, Courtney, and Brian. Theyre all married and have given us eight grandchildren. I find that being a granddaddy is the most fulfilling thing Ive ever done in my life.

At this stage of my life, I have more time to spend on my golf game. I would like to say it is improving, but that probably is not the case. Spending quality time with my grandchildren is my favorite pastime.

The privilege to live in a community like mine, and to enjoy the things that have resulted from efforts of previous generations, carries the responsibility to give back. Over the years, I have served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Parks and Recreation commissioner, and in my church. For the past five years, I have served on the Lee County Board of Education, and currently serve as chair. This seems a most natural job for me, as I have been an advocate for children my entire professional career. To provide a child with an education is to open the doors of the future for every student.

We recognize that allour patients are unique and deserve to receive orthodontic care that reflects their individual needs. Ive worked in the field for about 20 years and joined Drs. Smith and our team in 2015. I love being part of helping patients achieve the smile of their dreams and getting to know them on a personal level. My favorite day is when we take off the braces and our patient cant stop looking in the mirror and sharing their big, beautiful, happy new smile! I assist Dr. Brian with patient care, including changing wires and placing braces.

The combination of Dr. Lynn Smiths years of clinical experience and Dr. Brian Smiths knowledge of the newest treatment techniques and technologies gives our patients the best of both worlds. From custom-designed treatment plans to flexible payment options to meet different budgets, we are truly a patient-centered practice.

We treat our patients like family. We take the time to get to know our patients sowe can provide the best, most appropriate treatment possible. We do not have a one size fits all approach to orthodontics; each patient and each situation is unique and special and deserves to be treated as such. Drs. Brian and Lynn Smith love orthodontics because its not just about teeth; its also about building relationships.

Our entire team loves making people smile, both in and out of the office! Each year we sponsor a food drive to benefit Backpack Pals of Lee County, a program committed to ensuring nutrition to children in need. We also support the Sanford Area Soccer League, our local high school band and athletic programs, the Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club, and the dental programs of Central Carolina Community College.

In our office, we embrace technology in an effort to continuously improve our patients experience. To that end, we use both the iTero and 3Shape Trios 3D digital scanning systems. Our team has extensive experience with intraoral scanning to reduce our patients in-office chair time, improve treatment outcomes, and fabricate better fitting retainers and appliances, all in an effort to provide our patients with the best experience possible!
