As an orthodontist, it is intensely gratifying to me to help people feel better about how they see themselves and how others may see them. I can sometimes change a personality with the patient not realizing its happening!
I love what I do. I love transforming peoples lives, personalities, and how they feel about themselves, all by changing smiles. I love the ongoing challenges, intricacies, and biomechanics of tooth movement. I love combining medicine, science, and art to craft a smile that is stable, functional, becoming, and will last.
After almost 40 years of practicing orthodontics, I can honestly say I still love what I do and have no plans of stopping. My grandfather was a dentist. My father was a physician, as were two uncles. Choosing to go into healthcare seemed right to me, and I have never doubted that decision. Now I have a son in dental school!
At Smith Smiles, our patients are part of our family. My team members have worked together for a long time. We offer experience, compassion, ethical care, and a listening ear. Each team member brings their own personality and knowledge to the office, and together we deliver a treatment experience and results that have our patients smiling!
In addition to my private practice, I have been a clinical instructor with the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics for more than 35 years, with my specialty being Invisalign and clear aligner therapy. Teaching the next generations of orthodontists keeps me engaged and excited, and I have access to leading-edge research and evolving techniques, as well.
In addition to teaching, I regularly attend and participate in study clubs, forums, and summits, to staycurrent on the newest developments in the specialty. I am honored to be a member of the Top 1% Docs of Invisalign in North America.
I have two sons and a dog. My oldest son, Scotty, is a world traveler and in the process of starting a business in Hong Kong. My youngest son, Spencer, is currently attending the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. Our spoiled and much-loved dog is Cookie, a labradoodle.
When Im not working, I can usually be found outside. I love anything to do with the water: sailing, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, surfing, and waterskiing. I also play golf and tennis and, in the winters, paddle tennis. During warmer months I usually bike18 to 40 miles before breakfast! I also enjoy cooking, grilling, and entertaining at home.
In addition, I volunteer my time with various community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America (Im an Eagle Scout). I also currently serve as the Director of Public Safety in Groton, where I oversee the police and fire department.

I just have to say Smith Smiles was the most amazing experience, with the most amazing crew who are extremely kind hearted people! I loved going to my appointments which is rare for me to go to anything to do with teeth or dentistry and not hate it. I can whole heartedly say i will miss going to my appointments at Smith Smiles, but i'm extremely glad that they helped achieve my dreams of having perfect teeth so from the bottom of my heart thank you Dr. Smith and Marriane for being so kind to me, i truly appreciate you both as well as the rest of the workers. here are my teeth in October 2021 to now March 2022! thank you Smith Smiles!

Dr. Smith and his entire staff are an extraordinary bunch! Despite the fact that my youngest son has been accompanying his 2 older brothers to Dr. Smith's office for years, he was not happy when we told him it was possibly his turn for braces. Dr. Smith and his entire staff completely turned him around in a matter of seconds! Dr. Smith was telling jokes, doing magic tricks, and chatting it up in his fun, silly way and totally connected with my son. He came home so excited at the prospect of braces! I am grateful for the impressive bedside manner & professionalism everyone who works at the office exhibits. Dr. Smith's knowledge and attention to detail is unmatched. MY 2 older sons have smiles that light up the room, thanks to Dr. Smith and his crew. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs braces (or Invisalign!)

We had both of our Children treated at Dr Smith's office and we were very pleased with the results and costs. One of our children got the Invisalign and the other traditional braces, so we experienced both paths of treatment. They have an outstanding staff at every level and really went out of their way, especially with my daughter who had the traditional braces to get her treatment completed and get her smile completely finished. The costs were fair and various discounts were offered that made the finances easier to swallow. Dr Smith is always available for any questions and on one occasion he even offered to come in on his day off so that coordinating a required procedure with another dentists office would work sooner and hence get the braces off weeks earlier. Follow-up afterwards is great too, free checkups to monitor retainer use.

2 weeks until I can see the orthodontist after records got taken became "you get a vague email in 2+ weeks only other orthodontists would understand and then you have to schedule your own appointment after that anyway, that's by the way, a further 2 weeks away" Hate being mislead and I hate people wasting my time. Do not recommend.

This place is amazing the staff are so kind and they take pride in there work. My favorite staff member is Lauren, she's amazing everytime I called for help on my treatment she was right there and so kind!!!

I had an appointment in an adjoining building. I went into this dental office to ask for directions to the eye doctor and was met with an absolute rude team of women inside the office who spoke rudely to me with my two children present.They did not say hello, and we're extremely rude and not helpful. They mocked me as I left, saying that I should have been able to find it on my own. There is something to be said about a friendly and kind staff, and this place didn't have either that morning. No stars deserved.

I had an issue as far as payment options they expected me to pay 2000 up front in order to get my braces off and get my retainer lied to me about it because legally they have to take your braces off even if you don't have the full balance and all I was trying to do was call and see what my options were to see if I could possibly make payment increments to pay the balance but she said I wasn't able to I had to pay the balance or she was sending to collections Julie was very rude and so unprofessional ... I honestly do recommend the doctor he's very kind and knows what's he doing but other than that I don't recommend dealing with Julie very unkind and unprofessional ....

Wow how time flies as your child grows this is my second time around with my youngest daughter- and I would never dream of having another orthodontist take Doctor Scott's place ! HE is awesome with his patients the staff always greets you with smiles what a nice place, i couldn't be happier

My twin boys have been seeing Dr Scott and his staff and we could not be happier. son #1 just had his braces removed and son 2 will be done shortly. I can not recommend highly enough.

Oops! I chose the wrong Orthodontist and the wrong method of orthodontic appliances. Per Dr. Smith's recommendation I chose Invisalign. After my first appointment I was handed twelve months of pre molded/made upper and lower molds to fit my teeth and was scheduled to see a technician in his office once a month or so. Wow! Now I understand why Invisalign is an Orthodontists dream. It takes the work out of the process. The Invisalign was rough on the lining of my mouth no matter how much I filed the edges (yes I filed the edges not the dentist), the on and off process of the Invisalign ultimately fractured a tooth in the back and pulled a crown off of a molar. I complained, complained and complained. Dr. Smith rarely saw me and when he did he never had a solution. He is VERY HANDS OFF, it's like a dental sweatshop! I wore the Invisalign for four months. There's a lot of money to be made with Invisalign and in my opinion this dentist is maximizing his earning potential with this appliance.
