We are able to serve your entire family, including toddlers, children, teenagers and adults, and we have treated multiple generations of families in our dental practice throughout the past several decades. Rebranded in 2019 as Smiles on the Canal Family Dentistry, the practice was previously known as Thakrar Dental.
With a patient-first focus, our objective is to treat each and every patient as if they were a member of our family. From our doctors & hygienists to our dental assistants and front office staff we all strive to ensure that you have a great experience at our dental practice. Our office is located in Fairport, New York on the Erie Canal and we serve patients from across the Greater Rochester Area. We specialize in treating the entire family, including toddlers, children, teenagers and adults.
Originally from Mexico, I completed my residency in Advanced General Dentistry at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health in Rochester (I liked the area so much that I decided to stay!) I enjoy most areas within general dentistry and I am Invisalign-certified.
Let me begin by saying that I am really excited to be joining Smiles On The Canal Family Dentistry! The practice originally began as a pediatric dental office in 1991, and I look forward to continuing that legacy. I truly appreciate that so many of the parents of our current pediatric dental patients were once pediatric patients themselves. In fact, the best part of being a pediatric dentist is developing these meaningful relationships and being welcomed into your families.
I am coming to Smiles On The Canal Family Dentistry from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester where I served as Clinical Director in the Pediatric Dentistry department. I completed my Pediatric Dental residency in 2012 at the University of Rochester, including a fellowship in neurodevelopmental and related disorders (LEND program) at the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, Golisano Childrens Hospital. Originally a native of Ottawa, Canada I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2008 from the University of Western Ontario and later practiced in a family dental practice until deciding to specialize as a pediatric dentist. Now, as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, I am deeply committed to lifelong learning and constantly improving what I can offer each individual child. I strive to earn each childs trust with compassion and empathy at every encounter.
When Im not working at our practice, Im spending time with my husband, and my French Bulldog, Bambino. I also enjoy traveling and quality time with my friends and family. I look forward to meeting you!
I have been a hygienist for 32 years, and giving adults and children bright, healthy smiles has made my career very rewarding. I graduated from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, which was the first school for dental hygiene in the United States.
My husband and I live on a small farm in Macedon where we enjoy growing produce and flowers. I also like to cook, and Ive just started reading a lot again after many years. I have three sons and two grandchildren, and I always look forward to our family time.

Wonderful experience. The staff does a great job of connecting with our daughter and putting everyone at ease. Serena is great at explaining everything and interacting in a friendly way. Dr. Mapes' positive attitude and knowledge is fantastic. Really glad to have such a great team taking care of our dental needs!

Wow, I am so impressed with Kathy, Serena an the Doc at this office. My son and I had a regular cleaning which was excellent and very efficient! I had a pesky issue that had been bothering me and the Doc went and filed down a rough spot on my teeth and it felt better. The practice is kind, gentle and skilful. Had an excellent first impression. Kathy the hygienist did a great job. Teeth never felt cleaner!

Amazing! The dental hygienist was wonderful with my active son and so was the dentist! I was so pleased with his experience. They spoke at his level and were super friendly and kind to my son. My 1 year old also just had his first appointment and it went great! I am happy that I finally found a great dentist for my kids.

We went for a second opinion. Dr Mapes was very kind and explained every option. She really made my almost-2 year old feel very comfortable. I will be returning even though it's an hour drive for us. I love this dentist!
