Ive been practicing dentistry for more than 30 years and cannot imagine a more fulfilling and rewarding profession. Every day I care for the smiles of some of the most incredible people: our patients! Each of them comes to us with their own goals and concerns. By really listening to a patient, and watching their body language, I learn about their needs. This allows me to develop a treatment approach that works for their specific situation.
As a dentist, Im constantly looking out for my patients best interest. I strive to deliver care that improves their oral, overall, and smile health. I am glad to help someone achieve their healthiest and best smile. Im just as happy to get a person out of dental pain and provide them the relief needed to enjoy life again. I also like restoring function, enabling a person to comfortably and properly chew.
In the years Ive been a dentist, Ive been honored to care for many wonderful individuals. I enjoy getting to know each person, as well as their family. Im humbled to now be caring for the smiles of the children and even the grandchildren of some of my first patients!
I first attended theUniversity of Northern Iowa. Then I enrolled at theUniversity of Iowa College of Dentistry, where I was awarded my Doctorate of Dental Surgery. That education provided excellent foundational knowledge of the field.
However, this is a constantly evolving profession. New technologies, materials, and techniques are continually being developed. In order to provide my patients with the best treatment options, I must stay current on these changes. By taking continuing dental education courses, I ensure our practice exceeds our patients expectations for leading-edge care.
I was raised in Maurice and have called Johnson, IA my home for more than 20 years. Im happily married to a violinist and Tulip Queen. We have three children, eight grandchildren, and a dog named Coda. When Im not caring for patients, I enjoy basketball, biking, golfing and watching sports. I spend a lot of my time at Lake Okoboji, too.
Being an active part of our community is important to me. I volunteer with various church organizations and groups. I also participate in Dentistry from the Heart, a program offering free dental care to those in need.

Dr. Odland loves being a dentist because he is rewarded with giving patients the smile they have always wanted while improving their oral and overall health. Outside of work, Dr. Odland loves exercising, running, hiking and traveling. He also enjoys reading and watching movies in his free time. Dr. Odland is an avid Iowa State fan and loves going to Ames with his family to cheer on the Cyclones.

I really enjoy getting to know our patients and building strong friendships with them. I want them to feel at home, safe, and relaxed during their visits, so they look forward to coming back. I joined the West Des Moines Dental Care team in 2010 and love being part of such a wonderful practice. Working with patients, I take X-rays, prepare them for their procedure, and explain what will happen. Then I sit chairside, supporting the doctor and the patient.
I like helping people feel at ease and secure during their visits. Even people who have had bad dental experiences and are anxious quickly learn we offer painless care. As soon as they learn that, they relax and develop a positive feeling about dentistry and their oral health. I started working in the field in 2007 and found my home here in 2015. I assist the doctor during procedures while talking with and encouraging our patients.
I enjoy the company of my patients and learning about their lives. Not only do our conversations build a bond, but they tell me how I can help that person develop their healthiest smile. I became part of our team in 2015 and love working in a supportive environment where our patients needs come first. While I clean my patients teeth, I teach them about their oral health. I really like getting to know our patients and connecting with them. Ive been part of West Des Moines Dental Care since 2002 and have developed wonderful friendships with many patients and families. I spend time with patients making financial arrangements that work with their budget. I also help them with their dental insurance, making sure they get the most from their benefits and communicating with the insurance companies. I handle billing, too.

I had a gap in my front teeth my whole life until a few weeks ago when I came here to get it filled by tooth bonding. The dentist & assistant were amazing to work with and knew what they were doing! My smile looks great! The consultation was quick, and got me in for my next appointment to actually do the bonding within a week after. Price was exactly what was told to me during my consultation. Before I found them I had called other dental offices closer to me and they said they couldn't do what I was wanting and my only options were braces or veneers, which was outside of my budget. I was so glad to find them and see on their website they do exactly what I was wanting. Now I will be going here for all of my dental needs in the future.

Been going here for 25+ years were great.New owner change hours cancelled my appointment and failed to at least call me and let me know screw you smiles and new owner Thats what happens when the owner is not the dentist just a business owner.

This was my first visit to Smiles on Hickman for Cosmetic Dentistry. I was surprised and feel very special being in this clinic. The entire team was well coordinated for my appointment. For a long time, I was waiting to get a perfect match for my dental problem, and recently one of my friends recommended me about Smiles on Hickman and shared her experience. I felt great in the clinic and the Dentist was very friendly. I have 2 chipped teeth which embarrassed me many times. The doctor suggested to me in the best possible manner. He suggested to me different ways to gain my smile back like veneers or change with dentures or dental implants. they have really affordable dentistry I found in Des Moines. In the future, I will be recommending this clinic. Thank you

Hatts off! The best dentist in des moines is here. Recently i find out this place for my dental problems. From my last visit to a clinic in urbandale, it was a horrible experience and suffered with a lot more problem after the appointment. I was suffering from multiple cracked tooth and some capping issues. This time i was curious and looking for a consultation first. My first visit to this place was for a dental consultation, which was very much impressive as Dr. Phelps helped me with my multiple questions. He consulted me for different procedure and at the last i choose my teeth need a implants. Smiles on Hickman not only provides a comprehensive dentistry, they also have affordable dentistry and the price that suit us best. I wish them a great business ahead and surely will be referring others too. Thank you again

An admirable team of expert dentist in des moines. I had been to this clinic thrice for cosmetic dentistry and regular check up. Each and every time they proven their professionalism. I met with an accident few months back and have some broken teeth which was an embarrassing feature. Dr. Phelps helped me with providing dental crowns and dental implants which entirely changes my appearance. Thank you Team...

Reviewing Smiles on Hickman is very important as they have given their 100% time and effort on me with bad dental condition. We have already pointed out many dentists in Des Moines, but this was the best click as their pre and post services are good enough to give them a 4 star. Coming to my dental condition i was suffering from a bad phase where i was looses 2 of my left jaw teeth and one in a cue. I was desperately looking for a dental implant near Des Moines but not sure with the procedure. Then i consulted with Smiles on Hickman which referred me to visit once for free cosmetic consultation and then suggested the procedure. The next day i planned to have my implants, which was perfected placed. Thank you Smiles on Hickman

My wife usually hates going to the dentist I feel like we are switching dentists every couple of years. At Smiles on Hickman we have found the nicest Dentist in Des Moines, we have dealt with in a long while and I don't think my wife will be switching anymore. My wife was suffering from bad toothache from past few weeks but unable to find a dentist in West Des Moines who really cares for the patient in this pandemic. We contacted Smiles on Hickman and after fully satisfied that the clinic is safe we scheduled an appointment for cosmetic dentistry. It was a pleasant experience as our dentist consulted us different procedure and their pros and cons like dental implants, dentures, dental filling, etc. They were the best dentist in west des moines i found till date.
