Dr. Karen Shaw graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia in 1985 after receiving her bachelor degree from Wayne State University. After completing her residency in a General Dentistry at East Carolina University she began private practice in 1986, establishing Smiles by Shaw.

After practicing general dentistry for 31 years, Dr. Shaw retired in August 2017. Since retirement, she resides in Florida most of the time with her husband where they enjoy traveling, sailing, dancing, biking, and golfing.

One of her three children, Dr. Chelsea Marcuard, took over the practice in 2017 when she retired and was joined in ownership by Dr. Shannon Minges in January 2020. Dr. Shaw continues to practice dentistry in a volunteer capacity in Florida and occasionally comes back to fill in at Smiles by Shaw!

Dr. Chelsea Marcuard graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School in 2012. Prior to that, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a BS in Biology and graduated with distinction. Dr. Marcuard went on to complete two years of post-graduate education after dental school.

Her first post-graduate year was at the General Practice Residency here at East Carolina University where she had extensive training in handling medical and dental emergencies. During the second year, Dr. Marcuard was granted a position as an oral pathology fellow, dividing her time between the University of Maryland and Perry Point Veterans Affairs Hospital and learning more about diagnosing oral cancer, as well as other oral pathologies.

Dr. Marcuard has participated in many service outreach programs including the Greenville Homeless Shelter dental bus and the Philippines Medical Missions of Mercy. She is the founder of a program which brings dental hygiene instruction to the Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic, for which she received an Outstanding Community Service award from UNC-Chapel Hill.

She was a member of Psi Omega during her four years of dental school and was invited to join Gamma Pi Delta for her excellent performance in prosthetic dentistry. She is currently a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Society.

Dr. Marcuard, daughter of Dr. Karen Shaw and Dr. Stefan Marcuard, is a native of Greenville and a Rose High School graduate. She returned to the area in 2014 to join her mother's dental practice and officially took over the practice in January 2017. She and her husband have two sons and two dogs. Outside the office, she enjoys hiking, skiing, traveling, building puzzles and spending time with her family.

Dr. Shannon Minges (Holcomb) is a graduate of East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduation she was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement in the Study of Prosthodontics. Prior to dental school she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education and Promotion with a minor in Business and her Master of Public Health from East Carolina University.

While in dental school, Dr. Minges was an Albert Schweitzer Fellow 2012-2013 which enabled her to help start a free dental clinic hosted at the Grimesland Community Resource Center. She also was co-founder and President of the DMD fraternity.

Dr. Minges has always had a passion to serve. She has volunteered her professional services through the Baptist Mens Church Dental Bus, Give Kids a Smile, Project Homeless Connect, NC Missions of Mercy, and the Dominican Dental Mission Project. Outside of dentistry she has enjoyed being an active member of the Junior League of Greenville, NC. Dr. Minges is also a member of the Womens Roundtable Board of Directors and ECU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Dr. Minges is involved with the professional community as a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Society as part of her commitment to continuous learning and quality patient care. In 2020, Dr. Minges became co-owner of Smiles By Shaw.

Dr. Minges is originally from Fayetteville. She spent one year practicing in Morehead City prior to returning to Greenville, which she now calls home. She and her husband have one son and a maltipoo named Audrey. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and ECU football (Go Pirates). Dr. Minges was selected as a recipient of ECUs 40 Under 40 Leadership Award for 2016.

I scheduled a second opinion with Dr. Minges at Smiles by Shaw after an alarming visit at a local "fast food" dental office that was dictated by a new insurance policy. The new dentist diagnosed me with full periodontal disease with complete debridement needed at a cost of $3000 to my insurance and out of pocket $1500 to myself. This was at my initial appointment prior to any cleaning had taken place. Dr. Minges assured me I did NOT have periodontal disease nor was this treatment widely used by dentists anymore. It was evident Dr. Minges cared more for my well-being than making profit for her practice. Insurance will not cover visits with Smiles by Shaw, but I will gladly pay out of pocket for competent care and peace of mind. My mouth and wallet thank you Dr. Minges.

We love Dr. Minges! My 3 year old twins had their first routine visit today and our visit, from start to finish, was great. We checked in quickly, went to the back quickly and were greeted by lots of friendly, smiling faces. One of my twins was anxious about the visit and they did a wonderful job getting them comfy in the chair, letting them pick flavors, introducing them to the tools and reassuring them throughout the visit. Dr. Minges' dental hygienist was also great (I'm sorry I missed your name!). A big thanks to everyone there for making us feel at home. We will definitely continue our dental care there. Dr. Minges is very warm and personable and has an endearing, nurturing demeanor. Thanks, ladies!

I was grinding threw my retainers at night and this concerned me, so I brought my retainers into my previous dentist office for the dentist to evaluate and he saw no issue w/ them (there was about half of my top retainer missing) So therefore, I began researching other Dentist in the area & a friend recommended Smiles by Shaw! After becoming a patient there, I was informed that my retainer wear was caused by clenching/grinding at night! Dr. Minges recommended that I receive therapeutic Botox to treat my masseters, as well as impressing for a night guard. Since having my masseters treated w/ therapeutic Botox (in combination w/ using my night guard) my sleep has improved significantly, my headaches have stopped, & my jaw is no longer locking up! I would recommend this treatment to anyone experiencing issues with TMJ/TMD!

I've never been a person that was happy to go to a dentist office.. but this place? Has changed my whole outlook about going to a dentist office The staff was phenomenal, the communication was crystal clear, and I personally felt like I was in the best hands. I've called other dental offices, but this one? Top notch, and beyond impressed. THANK YOU to this establishment, beyond grateful!

Recently I had to have more extensive work done and Dr. Minges was thorough and took her time to make sure everything was done perfectly. I look forward to receiving my dental care here for years to come!

Thoroughly professional. First class operation. I just had to change dentist's because of my dental insurance coverage with my wife's plan. Feel like I have been "upgraded" on every level. Good people. Period.

We took my newborn to Smiles by Shww for a frenectomy. Dr. Minges and everyone else we worked with was incredibly friendly, calm, and took time to explain procedures and answer questions.

We were referred to Smiles by Shaw to have our infants tongue tie evaluated so we decided to bring our toddler as well for her first dental appointment. I was extremely nervous going in as I have a fear of dentists myself but let me tell you, they were amazing. Dr. Minges did not push to hard with our toddler and did as much as she could without making her too uncomfortable. She was extremely patient with her and did not get frustrated with her crying and unwillingness to cooperate. As for the infant, she eased any concerns about having her tongue and lip tie revised and made us comfortable with having the procedure done. When she returned with her after the procedure our baby wasn't even crying!! She has also made herself very accessible for after care and making sure everything is going well with recovery. I am excited to continue a relationship with Dr. Minges for the care of our girls!!

This office is amazing!!! I switched to this office after being with my previous dentist for more than 10 years and I haven't regretted it for a second! My previous dentist wanted to refer me out for an orthodontist consult, when what I needed was a very simple thing. Smiles by Shaw and Dr. Minges agreed to help me, saving me a trip out of town to see my old orthodontist! Then, when my son was born this year, we quickly determined he was tongue tied, making it near impossible for him to breastfeed. This team worked us in quickly and performed the procedure needed for my son to be able to safely nurse. The staff and Dr. Minges have been outstanding! I would highly recommend them to anyone!!

Awesome job. Minimal discomfort and that was from having to keep mouth open so long. Very satisfied.

Not many folks I think say they love their dentist....but I do. I started coming here years ago when I moved to Greenville and wouldn't consider leaving. Everyone is friendly and professional. They were taking health precautions to the max before covid even hit. No corners are cut for staff and patient safety. I don't feel like I am a number or that they want to upsell me with something I don't need. I feel valued.

Smiles by Shaw is the best dentist office in Greenville! I love Dr. Minges, she always makes me feel comfortable in the chair and makes me feel like my "teeth goals" are possible. And so do the assistants and hygienists! They are all amazing and so sweet! I have had this tied tongue situation on my upper lip and gum basically all my life. When I met with Dr. Minges about it she literally said I can laser this off easily with one maybe 2 treatments... I was shocked! Well it was the best decision ever having the frenectomy done. My smile is bigger and wider!
