Dr. April Kern graduated with honors from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to dentistry, she worked as a strategic management consultant in London, England. Dr. Kern received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Kern then elected to pursue further training by completing an intensive General Practice Residency at the level 1 trauma center at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kern stays current on the newest techniques and principles in dentistry with hundreds of hours of clinical and didactic continuing education (CE) courses. In addition to Invisalign Clear Essentials I/II and Reingage training, Dr. Kern is an Invisalign Platinum provider. She is a Board Member of the American Academy of Clear Aligners, and loves to mentor other dentists as the chairperson/leader of the 2021 AACA NoVA Study Club.
Dr. Kern is a member of the NOVA Institute/Seattle Study Club, the American Dental Association, the Northern Virginia Dental Society, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the American Academy of Women Dentists, and a charter member of the Nova Dentist Academy Study Club.
In her free time, Dr. Kern enjoys traveling, fitness, horseback riding, and spending time with friends and family. She lives with her husband Riaz, and their beautiful blended family in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Dr. Riaz Rayek has been an active member of the DC/Northern Virginia dental community for over 20 years. His passion in dentistry is to make his patients look and feel their best. Dr. Rayek works diligently to expand and enhance his knowledge and practice of dentistry through countless hours of continuing education, mentoring, and community outreach.
Dr. Rayek obtained his Bachelors of Science degree from George Mason University. He then went on to receive a Masters degree in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University. Dr. Rayek graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 2001.
Dr. Rayeks dentistry is on the cutting edge of technology, and he remains an early adaptor of emerging dental technologies and techniques. Dr. Rayek placed his first dental implant in 2002 and to date has placed over 10,000 implants and counting. Dr. Rayek offers PRF and PRP treatment to enhance his surgeries bone growth and esthetic re-contouring.
Dr. Rayek has been an Invisalign Provider since 2003 and has treated well over 1,000 smiles. He became an Invisalign Instructor for Dental Care Alliance in 2015, and continues to mentor doctors within the corporation.
Recently Dr. Rayek and his wife Dr. Kern have incorporated non-surgical facelifts into their dental practices in Northern Virginia in partnership with Evoke by InMode. Dr Rayek is at the forefront of enhancing patient confidence and achieves the ultimate smile enhancement with jawline, cheek, and chin contouring.

The dentists and staff at Smiles are incredible. One day after chipping a tooth, they got me in and started the fix immediately - as a NEW patient! Dr.'s Cartaya and Kern + team are amazing at their craft, making you feel extremely confident and comfortable with their plan to treat your problem. This is a 'must recommend' for any who seek dental care in the Reston area!

First-time patient, well my daughter was, and we were very pleased. We needed an appointment asap and Karen A. got us in right away. My daughter came in for a cleaning and extractions for braces treatment. Dr. Rayek provided a thorough examination and evaluation. He shared detailed information regarding my daughters treatment and provided us all the pros and cons in helping us decide the best course of action for her treatment. He put his very best interest in my daughter's health, even considering her future health as she is barely 16. At that moment I knew that she was in great hands. I appreciate Dr. Rayek's expert advice and his honesty. I will be returning to Smiles RTC to continue my Invisalign treatment with Dr. Rayek. Also, Dr. Cartaya is lovely and even shared her expert advice and ensured us of our care. We met Dr. Kern, super friendly and kind, and also met few other great team members. Everyone was very sweet and welcoming and surely made us feel like we have been there before, even though we are brand new patients. Looking forward to seeing the whole team again! Highly recommend Smiles RTC for all dental needs.

I had an amazing experience at Smiles at Reston Town Center. Nora was very helpful and patient while I made my appointment and got all my insurance taken care of. Karen and the whole staff serviced me with great hospitality, almost forgot I was in a dental office. Sara did a wonderful job with my teeth cleaning. She made me feel very relaxed and has gentle skilled hands. Dr. Kern and Dr. Cartaya took the time to understand my needs and guided me through the process of how to maintain and better my smile. I would one hundred and ten percent recommend Smiles at Reston Town Center. Definitely worth the two hour drive.

First impression made me feel like a priority. Would definitely recommend to others. I went in for sleep apnea testing. The office not only re-cemented a crown that had fallen off a few days prior (crown done by a different office) but they also recommended me to come back later in the day for a deep cleaning. Two Thumbs Up!!

I have been coming here for five years and still drive 45 minutes to come to this location. They are professional, courteous, and flexible with scheduling. The present the solution and work with you to help get any issue fixed quickly. Can't say enough great good things.

I would highly recommend smiles for any dentistry needs. I hadn't been to the dentist in quite a while and when I finally made my first appointment, the entire team at Smiles was welcoming and extremely professional. I feel comfortable and confident every time I visit. The office is conveniently located, always very friendly, and really flexible for scheduling. I'm so glad I chose Smiles for my dentistry needs! Update 9/8/2022 I'm finally done with my Invisalign journey and I couldn't be happier! Smiles is the best!

I'm so happy I found Smiles at Reston Town Center. My son came in on 8/11 for the National Align Your Teeth Day. The place was nicely decorated, they had prizes and giveaways. My son won an electric toothbrush. My son never smile and show his teeth, he is so excited to get his invisalign and to be able to fully smile all the way!

Poor office management. Christina who works here hasn't been responsive and does not seem to care about the customers. Although there was enough time before my visit, she did not go through the amount that will cost me for that visit. I was told about the cost while walking out.The doctors were great.

RTC Smiles is the best dental office in the area, Christina and Nora were perfect when checking me, in and out. Tamika, Karen and Jennifer were so gentle with taking the x-rays and assisting the doctor's, speaking of the doctor's, Dr. Rayek, Dr. Kern and Dr. Cartaya are such understanding and caring professionals with helped me with my dental needs.

Hands down this is the best dentist I ever visited, from the front desk (Christina and Nora) to the office tour by Karen. Not only did I express I didn't have insurance but they still took care of me. The assistant (Tamika) brought me back listen to my concerns and issues, and told me not to worry they would do whatever to make me comfortable and get me out of pain. I was admitted at ease. Dr. Cartaya did same day treatment and explain everything to me( what to expect and not). I had been in pain for a week and after seeing them it was gone. I will forever be a patient here. P.s they have all the lates technology and MORE... go visit them NOW

When I tell you I had the best dental experience ever!!! From the warm greeting at the front desk to my awesome cleaning needs and conversation with my amazing dental assistant Tamika who is very knowledgeable and a great asset to the company! Had a great consultation with Dr Rayek who thoroughly explained all of my needs!!! The staff at Smiles is very professional and not to mention the beautiful and clean inviting office environment!
