It takes about five years for a new dentist to understand the basics of what he or she is doing, then another ten years to get a clear picture of the whole field, if said dentist is curious enough. Then one must stay current, because dental materials, machines, and methods are always changing.

Staying current is the most challenging thing I do--also the most rewarding. It has made it possible for me to understand laser gum surgery, TMJ and myofascial pain problems, implants and bone grafts, orthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, sedation dentistry, and of course, general dentistry. Understanding the whole picture helps me see what is possible to make you look and feel better and healthier. It means there is something I can do to improve your life.

My name is Alyssa Mendoza and I started my dental career in 2009. I attended Apollo College and graduated with Honors. From there, I worked in an amazing Oral Surgery office for 3 years. I'm so excited to learn and grow and be an essential part of your dental care.

In 2000 earned my Associates in Applied Science in Administrative and Office Support Careers from Pima Community College. I ventured into the dental field when I joined Smile Tucson Family Dentistry team in 2005. Over the years, I have immensely enjoyed learning and becoming adept at the detailed aspects that a front office administrative staff member performs. I have especially appreciated all of Smile Tucsons wonderful patients and getting to know them. It is always my personal mission to be our patients advocate in all things dental.

I am married and have a daughter. On my days off from work, I enjoy cycling with my husband and friends, playing volleyball and backyard bird watching. I treasure my time spent on sewing, cross stitching, reading and researching my genealogy which seems to be a never-ending effort!

My name is Alyssa Cuellar. I am from a small town called San Manuel. I graduated from high school in 2015 and continued my education at Pima Community College on a two-year softball scholarship. I worked in a law office for two years and was ready for a change. I came across this amazing office and they gave me an opportunity to learn and grow here and I could not be more grateful. I have amazing colleagues and have met some amazing patients too.

The team at Smile Tucson Family Dentistry believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons' risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Smile Tucson Family Dentistry work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Tucson area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at Smile Tucson Family Dentistry can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

A. Primary, or 'baby,' teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

A. First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

A. Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

A. Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

A. Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

A. There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

Individuals with missing teeth have several options for restoring their smiles, and one of these options are dental bridges. Bridges can assist with filling the gaps left behind by missing teeth. Are they the right choice for you? Determining the answer to this question depends on several factors, so lets get started. They consist of artificial

Endodontics may be necessary if the pulp inside of the root of a tooth becomes damaged, decayed, or infected. This generally arises when the root of the tooth is exposed due to deep dental decay, dental trauma, or periodontal concerns (e.g., gum recession). Endodontics aims to restore the health of the tooth to avoid tooth

A full mouth reconstruction refers to a number of procedures done in dentistry to rebuild and reconstruct the oral cavity, including the gums, teeth and sometimes the jaw. These procedures are done using a cosmetic and restorative approach, both of which are necessary in order to improve the appearance and overall function of the mouth.

I came to get 3 fillings which usually really hurts, I literally felt 0 pain none at all!! They also had multiple dentists at once so I was done within like 20 minutes! They also have Disney+ and put on my favorite movie "infinity war". By far the nicest workers who were very caring and polite. I also got a Starbucks gift card after being thanked by the dentists like what!! BEST EVER

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Ricks for several years, even following him to his current office. Obviously we think highly of him--and his entire office team. Dr. Ricks is highly experienced and capable of doing many procedures a general dentist doesn't do. He also is very cordial and ensures his patients have a positive experience. Every member of his staff also contribute to patient comfort and satisfaction. We consider ourselves fortunate to be among his patients.

I have received care from Dr. Ricks for several years and have never had a complaint and consider him the best dentist I've ever seen. The staff is friendly and professional. As someone who abhors sitting in a waiting room of any type I've never had to wait for more than a couple of minutes which in itself rates 5 stars.

Seriously the nicest Dr and staff, super welcoming and comforting! I have TMJ and had a bunch of chips and damage all over the place; my first visit I expected your typical xrays and game plan. They saw how uncomfortable I was and did a crown that day!! I'm now pain free and finally smiling, all after my first visit! Honestly wish I had scheduled sooner, thank you guys for everything!
