Dr Sylvie Lam is committed to delivering the highest quality care with personalized service. Her practice philosophy is nurtured through her military and civilian training with a strong commitment to excellence and integrity. Dr Lam has provided comprehensive care in both government and private practice setting over the last thirteen years.
Dr Lam graduated from University of Maryland School of Dental Surgery in 2008, and furthered her training through Advanced Education General Dentistry (AEGD) post-graduate residency at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (Dayton, OH) in 2009 before serving as a dental officer at the Pentagon Tri-Care Clinic. Since then, Dr Lam has been in private practice general dentistry setting for the last ten years delivering multidisciplinary scope of practice; with an emphasis on major cosmetic, teeth replacement, enhancement, and rehabilitation.
Prior to being a dentist, Dr. Lam was a licensed CPA and worked as a public accountant for national and regional accounting firms. Dr Lam completed her undergraduate training with dual B.S. and B.A. degrees in Biology and Accounting from University of Richmond. She completed her graduated studies from University of Maryland Smith School of Business, earning an MBA along with her DDS from University of Maryland College of Dental Surgery in 2008.
In 2019, Dr Lam was recognized as a Fellow by the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD), a distinction earned by only 5% of dentists nationwide for commitment to lifelong learning and rigorous examination. Dr. Lam takes pride on improving patients oral health, appreciation of dentistry, and creating new smile as an art.
Dr Lams large portfolio of cosmetic and major restorative cases is a showcase of her expertise and artistic vision. Dr Lam is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), American Dental Association (ADA), Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (ACD), and Northern Virginia Dental Association (NVDA).
Welcome to our practice! I have been practicing dentistry for more than 30 years and have enjoyed every minute of it! I love the combination of art and science in dentistry. The challenge of providing excellent dentistry and the satisfaction of meeting that challenge make each day different and exciting.
I attended Virginia Commonwealth University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1978. Then I continued on to the Medical College of Virginia, where I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1982.
I take a diverse curriculum of continuing education in both clinical and business areas. My staff and I keep up to date with the many advances in clinical dentistry in order to provide high-tech treatments and give our patients the level of customer service they desire. I have always felt that a commitment to continuous education is necessary to fulfill my obligation to provide optimal care for my patients.

Dr. Ngo is a Fairfax-area native. He attended J.E.B. Stuart High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, from Virginia Tech and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, cum laude, from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He completed his General Practice Residency at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, South Carolina.

NEVER going back to this dentist!!! I was told I had 4 cavities and was scheduled for a filling. I went and got a second opinion from Oakton Family Dentistry and I don't have any cavities!!! Dr. Lam was going to DRILL INTO MY TEETH UNNECESSARILY! This dentist is a scam and just wants to get any dollar they can out of you. Highly unethical- lesson here get a second opinion and don't go to Smile Design.

Dr. Sylvie Lam is as pain free as Dr Roger Marcellin. He has been my dentist for over 30 years. If you need a dental practice I recommend Smile Design of Northern Virginia.

I have been to other dentists in the past but no other dentist compares to Smiles Design of Nothern VA. Dr. Pham is very knowledgeable, patient, caring and understanding. She is also very detail oriented and explain all of the details necessary to understand the services that they are providing to you as their patient. The staff is also fantastic with the ability to understand every question asked, friendly and very patient. I also do not live in Fairfax any longer but it is worth the drive to go to this dentist as they are the best in the NOVA area. If you need to have anything done such as filling, crown or root canal, they make it as easy as possible and try to make you comfortable as you can be so this is another great reason to go here! I have recommended several co-workers as well since I thoroughly have a great experience every time!

Fara has been my Hygienist for years, she is very thorough and knowledgeable, I actually followed her from another office that she worked at, everyone at Smile Design is super friendly and Dr. Lam creates a very happy and fun environment.

Smile Design always does a great job of taking care of my smile. I have been seeing Fara, my hygienist since I was young, and she has always done a great job! I've never had a bad experience. I highly recommend going here and if possible, ask for Fara!

I visited Smile Design of Northern VA and my amazing dental hygienist Fara gave me the best dental cleaning I've ever had. She was also very efficient and knowledgable about the types of treatments I needed on my teeth. There is no one else I would trust with my teeth!

I was referred to this clinic by my friend and I started getting my dental work done here.. I had two root canals, two crowns, and two fillings done by Dr. Ngo, I do not have any complaints about his work yet (everything is still newly done) but his attitude is the worst. He is agitated most of the time and acts annoyed. The office changed owners from Dr. Ngo to Dr. Lam Patients bared with you through the transition and accommodated your schedule, maybe consider showing appreciation to them especially the new ones who wanted to continue to work with you. Some of my appointments were ridiculously early to work around his schedule and I agreed. The office called me to change my appointments on many occasions to further date and I was ok with that. I was late for 30 mins and he acted so sour and mean. He doesn't act professional and throws fits while doing the work.

I love Smile Design. I cannot say enough about this practice. I absolutely adore Dr. Lam. She is definitely in a league of her own with cosmetic dentistry. She is an amazing artist and is precise like an engineer. She works swiftly, puts you at ease and makes every attempt to work with your schedule. The entire staff is professional, friendly and they work as a wonderful team. I don't know everybody there, but some if the techs and front desk staff like Asia, Mary, Mara and I know I'm leaving some important staff out. They all stand out. Kathy Winkler

Most people wouldn't say they had a great time at the dentist, but I schedule my 6 month cleaning and had a great experience. Thanks to the hygienist and Dr. Lam I schedule my next visit already.

I had been going to Dr. Ngo for a number of years and the experience with him was good. Recently I had a cleaning and was examined by Dr. Lam who made some recommendations for my treatment plan. $7,000 worth of recommendations! Crown one tooth, replace two other crowns and a custom mouth guard: $7.000. "But wait there's more", my insurance would cover about $700 and Smile Design would "write-off" about $3,000...so "only" about $3,300 out of pocket for me. (Was I negotiating a used car, or talking about my teeth?) Decided to get a second opinion from a dentist who said I needed NONE of that work. NONE. Yes, two of the crowns were older, but still in good condition and the gaps were fine. Areas around these crowns were fine as well. As far as the new crown, she thought that was a bad idea since it was going on a perfectly good tooth (trying to close a gap to the tooth next to it). Her treatment plan to me...get your teeth cleaned again in 6 months! Needless to say, we will be moving dentists. Overly aggressive with work that is NOT needed. They take pictures in your mouth and show you the pics and make it sound/look like you need a LOT of work. I figured the new dentists must have just bought into the practice and needed to make some money!

This is a wonderful dental practice. Dr. Ngo is professional and friendly. The hygienists are kind and gentle. I'd highly recommend this practice. I especially like that they have many extra precautions for COVID. It is very safe.
