Dry mouth, also known by its medical name, xerostomia is a condition characterized by either a lack of saliva or a decrease in its flow. Since saliva plays an important role in aiding digestion and maintaining good dental health, the consequences of xerostomia can be significant.
Three pairs of major salivary glands along with hundreds of minor salivary glands inside your mouth produce approximately 2-4 pints of saliva every 24 hours. Composed of 99% water and 1% electrolytes, enzymes and proteins; saliva washes over the teeth and surrounding soft tissues to cleanse and protect them from germs, tooth decay, and gum disease. Saliva also plays a key role in keeping the mouth lubricated and comfortable, so that food can be moved through the mouth easily for purposes of chewing, tasting and swallowing.
A lack of saliva makes simple oral functions more difficult and causes germs to increase in your mouth. More germs lead to bad breath, dental decay, gum disease, and provide the groundwork for a host of oral infections.
Treatment of dry mouth depends on the underlying cause of the problem. If it develops as a side effect of a particular drug, the physician may be able to prescribe an alternative medication. In some cases dry mouth may respond to drugs that promote an increased salivary flow. If not, artificial saliva can be used to keep the mouth moist and lubricated. As added protection, the dentist may recommend a prescription strength fluoride gel to help prevent tooth decay from developing. Patients can help alleviate some of the effects of dry mouth, by drinking water more often and avoiding drinks with caffeine or alcohol. They can also help to stimulate the flow of saliva by chewing sugarless gum or sucking on a sugarless candy. With dry mouth, it is essential to see the dentist on a regular basis for care.

This dentist is a liar!!!! She told me that I needed a Root Canal. I got a second opinion and no Root Canal was needed!!!! Imagine how many people she's lying to and making $ from her lies! I just hope that she gets caught!!!!!

I have been Dr.Usha's patient for a while now and not ones I have been disappointed going to her clinic. Dr. Usha and her staff makes you feel at home. They are all so polite and I have always been explained everything in detail from them. I highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Usha particularly.

Dr. Usha had been our family dentist for many years. The entire staff is extremely competent and courteous and makes sure you feel comfortable. I find it really messed up that my wisdom tooth needs to come out and they are giving me the run around. I'm having a lot of discomfort and pain they'd rather deal with other teeth instead of the one that's bothering me. After my appointment on the 7th of June I will be finding another dentist to go to. The lady that worked on my mouth couldn't give me a reason as to why she couldn't pull it, the pain medication she gave me for what she worked on that day doesn't work for the pain that I'm having from my wisdom tooth. They referred me to another dentist that wants me to wait almost another three weeks until I can get an appointment to be seen. I ask her will they be able to pull it when I come in and she said she don't know they will have to look at it first, which is crazy. I never had an issue with smile dental until now you don't just send your patient home in pain without any care that's wrong.

Smile Dental Office in Irvington is the best. Dr Usha, she works with you to make sure you are comfortable with your procedures .I left and went somewhere else for dental work but they didn't measure up to Dr Usha so I came back I GOT MY SMILE FROM SMILE DENTIST
