February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.

Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.

While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

I went in for free check up expecting to spend as little as possible. Not going to let them sweet talk me into spending more than necessary. Because I ain't got it LOL! Got one thing done and then another thing done. Just kept getting things done because the service was that much of a relief. And then I got home and was looking in my mirror and how white my teeth were after seeing the woman who cleaned my teeth. Well you finally did it and got everything paid for that was on the list they gave you for the first free checkup. You know what they actually did a really good job and actually spent time as if you paid lots of money. Talking about specifically the female dentist who cleaned my teeth. Couldn't see her face because they wore a mask but she was a thin white lady. Those white teeth said you really should leave a review because she did a really good job. Was the least expensive thing on the list that you got from the free checkup. But by far was the most thoroughly impressive. I highly recommend smile Crafters of Abilene Texas.

My father's appointment was right at 2pm. We arrived 10 min early. Doors were locked since they were closed 1-2. Good to know! Once we received history paperwork the masses arrived and there was a butt in every seat. Dad had a good experience and had no cavities but has to wait until next month for a cleaning. The only issue not related to the dentist was an argument that escelated to screaming and threats. (Mother and elderly son?) Fortunately we were on our way out. How do you handle disruptions like that? Refuse services or ask them to reschedule! All in all the wait was long, but services were fine

They are so nice at this place! The doctor is so young and cordial! He spoke Spanish, which was a plus for my elderly dad.

Took over 6 months to finally receive my denture. But it was useless. The denture was built for cosmetic use and failed to be useful for eating. The staff was really nice. They are a good dentist, but my unique situation was an expensive failure. The experience was more than unsatisfactory, I was left with a $1,500.00 paperweight. All I needed was some functional dentures, and it took over 6 months just to get an expensive piece of useless. An apology does not help or remedy the failure.

As many people have said before I attempted to schedule an appointment and was given an appt date in February, they called the day before and cancelled saying there were no drs going to be in office the day of my appt (how that happens is beyond me) and reschedule for over a month later, I advised one of my children had a cavity so to please call if they had an opening come up, needless to say I never got a call AND after confirming my new appt they called to cancel saying they would have to reschedule AGAIN, I won't put my kids dental health in hands of an office who can't keep their licensures on doctors up to date or keep schsidled appointments, I called another dentist in town and got an appointment scheduled for the next day, I would strongly recommend anywhere but this dental office
