Dr. Gordon Kent, founder of the Smile Center, has the skills, training, and experience you would expect from a specialist in orthodontics, implantology, anesthesiology, cosmetic dentistry, or reconstructive dentistry. We have a long-term staff of friendly, highly trained professionals who all share the same goal to improve your life through compassion and excellence in dentistry.
Every year, around Thanksgiving, we hold a special event providing dental care for anyone who needs it. There is no prequalification needed. The staff of the Smile Center donates their time, and we provide basic dental care, such as fillings, extractions, and cleanings, at no charge!
Dr. Kent then went to St. Louis, Mo. to attend Washington University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology, as well as teaching credentials in high school history and social studies. He became licensed to teach in both Missouri and Massachusetts.
Then Dr. Kent went to Israel for a year of religious study and work. It was at this time that Dr. Kent decided on a career change. He returned to Boston, Ma. There he spent the next three years working first as a substitute teacher in the Boston School System and then as a social worker for the city of Boston, while he took the necessary science courses for entrance to dental school. He took these courses at the following universities as they fitted around his work schedule: Harvard University, Boston University, Northeastern University, and Suffolk University. During this period Dr. Kent also spent considerable time volunteering in the emergency department of Boston City Hospital. Dr. Kent was entered in 1976 and graduated three years later from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine with a degree of D.M.D in 1979. Because of his academic placement through examination, Dr. Kent was asked to be a teaching assistant for some of his dental school courses instead of taking them as a student and he was able to complete advanced work in histopathology. While in dental school Dr. Kent continued his volunteerism in the emergency clinic of the dental school.
Also while in dental school, Dr. Kent continued to work part time for the City of Boston as a social worker and then as a dental laboratory technician. After earning his doctorate in 1979, Dr. Kent moved to Western New York with his family. In 1981, Dr. Kent founded The Smile Center.
His vision is to provide the finest oral health care possible, using the latest but proven technologies in the gentlest ways, in an environment that is comfortable and respectful of the patients. So, all these years Dr. Kent has been providing the option of treatment with sedation catering to the dental coward in us all.
Dr. Kent has devoted his early career years to extensive advanced dental education. Dr. Kent has been providing dental implant treatment longer than anyone else in western New York. He is one of the few Fellows of the American Society of Osseointegration, an implant academy. He was one of the first doctors in western New York to place the modern types of dental veneers or facings. Dr. Kent was also one of the very first doctors in the country to train and practice Straight Wire Orthodontics, which has become the modern standard of excellence in orthodontics. Because of his extensive training in so many dental disciplines, Dr. Kent most often practices reconstructive dentistry treating patients who have the most complex needs. Recently, Dr. Kent has been focusing on treating patients who have dental conditions that are the very worst and are in need of immediate dentures, which he provides in one visit while the patients are sedated.
