As a dentist in Virginia Beach, we focus on prevention to help you avoid dental problems rather than having them treated. And one of the best prevention tools we recommend for our patients is getting a checkup and cleaning regularly. Keep reading below for answers to the most common FAQs we hear on preventive services and feel free to contact us if you have any other questions!

For patients with healthy gums, coming in every 6 months is usually all thats necessary. However, there are exceptions such as patients with diabetes or during pregnancy when more frequent cleanings can be beneficial.

Also, patients with gum disease usually need cleanings every 3 to 4 months, which allows us to maintain the progress made from their initial gum treatment and prevent the disease from getting worse. This not only lowers your risk of tooth loss, but also many other conditions (e.g. heart problems, stroke, diabetes, etc.) that are associated with gum disease.

The American Dental Association recommends a checkup around the first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in. These early visits are much less involved than adult visits and wont include a cleaning or X-rays until around 3 to 5 years of age.

In many cases, toddlers do great by sitting on a parents lap as we examine their teeth and jaws. After weve made sure everything is developing normally, well give you valuable information about your childs oral health and how you can prevent cavities and other problems from the start.

Our goal is to help you maintain a healthy smile and keep your dental work to a minimum. If you only come in to see us when youre in pain, we often have to do more extensive treatment than we would have otherwise. By getting regular checkups and cleanings, we can find cavities, gum disease, and other issues before theyve progressed (when treatment is easier and less expensive).

A great example of this is a small cavity that isnt causing pain yet. When were able to find it early on with routine X-rays, it can usually be treated with a simple filling instead of a dental crown or root canal.

X-rays allow Dr. Javeed to see areas that she cant see with her eyes alone, including underneath your existing dental work, in between your back teeth, around the roots of your teeth, and in the jawbone. That enables her to find small cavities that arent causing pain yet, signs of gum disease such as bone loss around the roots, and cysts, infections, and tumors.

Most patients need routine bitewing X-rays annually or at every other checkup (with a comprehensive set of X-rays every 3 to 5 years). However, you may need additional X-rays to evaluate a specific area if youre having unexplained pain or sensitivity.

Don't offer services without being able to provide insurance coverages before. No one wants to be surprised of a bill.

I've been seeing Dr. Javeed for about 10 years now. The Dr sees both of my children too. This month unfortunately my son (8) got his first cavity from sneaking sports drinks after bedtime. His first cavity and the last time we have any of those sugary drinks in our home. I've had a bit of dental work in my life. I don't personally have any anxiety over dentist offices or dental work but many people do. It's not hard to imagine getting an anesthetic injection and a filling as a child could be a traumatic experience. Needless to say my young son could not have had a better experience getting his tooth filled. It helped that neither myself nor my family front-loaded him with any anxiety but the credit goes to Dr. Javeed who handled every detail with great care. Dr. Javeed's clients are of all ages and as a middle aged client I've always been completely satisfied. I have to admit I really didn't know exactly how good she was until she took care of my son when it really mattered. I'd imagine most any dentist could clean a kid's teeth and let them grab a toy from the treasure box and they'd be happy. It's much more rare when needles and drills are involved. My son didn't shed a tear, not a single wince nor a bit of fear. He was actually happy sitting up in her chair after all was said and done. To be clear, she didn't use laughing gas as is often used on children. She uses nothing more than her calm voice and a magician's level skill of distraction. Long story short. She's great with kids. I don't write a lot of reviews. It requires something monumentally bad or as in this case something monumentally good.

My wife and I had not prioritized dental care for close to a decade. We were both very nervous about where to even start to get ourselves on track. Dr. Javeed and her team have been absolutely amazing in getting our mouths healthy and we both feel SO much more confident! We both highly recommend Smile Care Family Dentistry!

I loved the cleaning but becoming weary of the dental care. I had an excellent dental team in CT who taught me how to care for my teeth. Upon relocating here and trying smile care every time I come there is a report of a new cavity in 2 weeks time. I also hear as the dentist is talking to others more cavities. I am not sure what this says for the care or the practice.

Doc and her staff are absolutely wonderful! I was in severe pain and Doc actually had her staff call and check on me. I have a hectic work schedule however at every turn they go out of their way to fit me onto the schedule. I truly appreciate the level of effort and professionalism exhibited.
