Extensively trained at some of the most prestigious dental institutions in the nation, Dr. Donian Shen strives to elevate dentistry beyond the typical experience. She began her career at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry. She then obtained her Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry. Following graduation, Dr. Shen completed her residency at the VA Palo Alto Hospital. After practicing dentistry at the Valley Medical Center for some time, she decided to open her own office to provide customized general, implant, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry treatment with the comfort of sedation to patients of all ages.
Dedicated to continuing education, Dr. Shen has undertaken several advanced post-graduate courses in a variety of dental fields, including IV sedation at the University of Southern California and oral conscious sedation at the DOCS Institute. She is particularly proud of her training in the leading dental implant techniques, which she completed at the world-renowned Carl Misch Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Misch. Furthermore, she has extensive experience with full mouth reconstruction, block bone grafting, and soft tissue grafts.

Dr. Wei Nguy received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), and he is an advanced general dentist. He is also passionate about the care he provides for his patients. Dr. Nguys personal philosophy is that caring is an attitude of the heart, excellence is a state of mind, and work is an act of love. If all these factors are combined, high quality results can be achieved. Dr. Nguy pursues this goal every time he is providing dental care to our patients.
Dr. Nguy grew up near Frankfurt, Germany, where he holds a dental degree as well as a PhD degree from the University of Bonn. The thesis of his research was about adhesive cosmetic materials in dentistry. Dr. Nguy is highly trained and experienced in all aspects of dentistry, with a particular emphasis on aesthetics and endodontic treatment. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the American Association of Endodontics.
Marivic joined the Smile By Design team in June 2017. She can help you with your insurance and assure that your personal information will be kept confidential. She believes that each patient should be treated with respect and compassion, because every patient is important. Shes grateful to be part of the Smile By Design team.
Diana has been working in the dental field for over 15 years, and joined Smile By Design over a year ago. As a member of the Front Office team, she is one of the first friendly faces you will see when you walk in our office.
Maricel joined Dr. Shens dental practice in November 2008. Her philosophy is treating patients in a manner that she would expect to be treated with sincerity, respect and professionalism. She is committed to providing compassionate care and individualized education to our patients.

I lost some teeth due to an accident, and they took me in on a saturday night. The doctor already left the office a few hours prior, but she came back and preformed surgery for me. The staff are so kinda and welcoming! They were very caring, and helped my feel comfortable before going into surgery. Every time I come in for checkups, they always welcome me with warm smiles! Very nice practice with wonderful people!

I came here for my wisdom teeth extraction and Dr Shen is in charge. She is very professional and did the job clean and fast. The atmosphere is relax and made the process more enjoyable. Other staffs are friendly and helpful. The environment is clean and the chair is super comfortable. I definitely recommend this clinic.

I had 6 implants and more than ten crowns in my mouth, meaning I have seen many dentists in my life and Dr. Shen is my favorite! She is an expert and service people by heart. The staffs there are nice and caring too! The clinic is well designed like they design the smile. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!

Great experience and amazing service! I had a dental emergency and Dr. Shen was very quick to respond and was able to see me with a very short notice. Dr. Shen and all the staff were professional, friendly and beyond great. My procedure went smoothly, painless, and they explained very well what was going on. They gave me plenty of information and answered all of my questions. Highly recommend!

Such an incredible place. Every staff member and doctors were absolutely amazing. Super helpful, caring, and understanding. The environment is so easy going and calming. I came in with a broken tooth. And came out with a great fix, same day. They worked very hard to make me feel comfortable and happy. This place is a must!

Generally speaking, the staff is very polite, friendly, and attentive. Happy to report I've not had any unpleasant interactions with anyone in the office. Routine dental care is nothing too special, but that's perfectly okay considering if I had much to say it'd be negative. Though you'll probably get reminded to floss more like any other dentist office. ;) Recently I had my first dental surgery here which was the extraction of my 4 wisdom teeth. Everything went better than expected considering how miserably things tend to go for others, though admittedly it's not necessarily the dentist's fault as some cases are naturally tougher than others. A week beforehand, I was given ample information for preparation, medication, and expectations for the procedure and the staff gave me a helpful rundown of what was to happen. Could not tell you much about the procedure as l slept like a baby (the angel kind, not the crying at 3am kind) and the sedatives helped a lot with needle and dental anxiety. After the procedure, bleeding and most swelling stopped after the first day and never had to take much pain meds despite my bottom 2 wisdom teeth being sideways and quite entrenched. I'm currently on track to recover in 5 days (eating and drinking at almost normal capacity). I'm being a bit more cautious but 3 days after I was in fairly good shape. As a plus, they are also taking COVID precautions seriously, which is expected but reassuring nonetheless.

Let me start by saying there aren't enough stars to give them a 10 out of 10 here! Most people don't enjoy a dentist visit but I did. The staff was amazing professional and friendly! The decor is appealing to the eye and most important clean. The doctor took the time to throughly explain what was wrong and the corrective actions needed. Lastly, just when I thought my experience with Smile By Design couldn't get any better it did! I was astounded when I received a follow up call tonight making sure that I was ok. Thank you to each and everyone there that made this an enjoyable experience! I will be recommending Smile By Design! ..

During shelter in placed, I called Smile By Design made an appointment with Dr. Shen. I had a front tooth implant crown done somewhere else that was not natural looking and stood out in comparison to my other front teeth. It made me feel like the original work was botched up. I had no confidence in smiling. Dr. Shen explained to me in detail what she could do to correct the problem. She did the work very carefully. I am so happy with the end result and it was affordable. I highly recommend Smile By Design (Dr. Shen) for all dental services! Dr. Shen is amazing and shout out to Maricel! and the staff is awesome!!

Just an amazing experience. I'm one of those impossible to numb, but pass out when I get a shot patients and I had an old abscess lurking under the failed root canal, and the tooth above it needed a root canal on a tooth that had broken severely and it's root extended into my sinuses, . The first dentist I went to had never seen a root so long..... So I found Smile by Design on Google one morning after a piece of bacon was shoved into the pulp of my broken tooth. I was given an appointment in a few hours, and had surgery scheduled in less than a week, to give the antibiotic a chance to reduce the infection. The abscess even came out on the tooth, and they didn't have to scrape too much! I was skeptical about the sedation but it was better than I could have hoped. I came to with no worries, and so much less pain than I'd been in in months, and that's been the case for a week now. Pain and trauma free. If you're jumpy in the chair (that's why my old root canal failed) and are getting a root canal done, I highly suggest this awesome team.
