I was born and raised in Martinsburg, West Virginia. I attended Bridgewater College and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. After Bridgewater, I continued my education at West Virginia University School of Dentistry in Morgantown, WV, graduating in 2008. While at dental school, I met my wife, Kelly, and we were married in December 2008. We now have four active kids who keep us very busy. In my spare time, I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including golfing and hunting.
I enjoy having the ability to make an impact through various church and community activities. I previously served on the Board of Directors for Healthy Smiles of the Eastern Panhandle, which is an organization in WV that treats the dental needs of patients who would not have the ability otherwise. I always enjoy finding ways that I can give back to the local community for allowing us the opportunity to serve them.
I am originally from the small town of Falls View, West Virginia. I started in the dental profession at age 18 when I was accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program at West Virginia University Institute of Technology. After graduation I worked as a hygienist for six years. I loved the dental profession more than I could have ever imagined so I decided to become a dentist! I attended West Virginia University School of Dentistry, where I obtained my DDS degree and, as fate would have it, that is where I met my husband, Tony. We now have three beautiful and entertaining kiddos who consume our spare time, but I wouldnt have it any other way!
The thing that I love most about dentistry is that it allows me to work one on one with people on a daily basis. It is more than treating teeth. It really is about working with patients to help them feel better and look their best, while restoring their oral health. Many folks are fearful of dentistry, and I take pride in being able to help my patients work through and manage their anxieties to ultimately reach their oral health and/or cosmetic goals. I am truly grateful for all of the blessings that I have been given in life, and always look forward to another opportunity to make a difference in someone elses life.
The original office of Smallwood and McKown-Smallwood Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has been a part of the Valley for several years. It was originally established in 1978 by Dr. Danny Neese, and was located on East Market Street in Harrisonburg until 2004 when the office was relocated to 4102 Quarles Court. In July of 2013, Dr. Anthony Smallwood and Dr. Kelly McKown-Smallwood joined the practice and continue to offer comprehensive dental services to patients of all ages.

I've been a regular with Dr Smallwood since they first came to Harrisonburg some years ago and I can highly recommend them. Dental Hygienist Mattie does an excellent job! Where would my teeth be without them?

Every person that I've ever come in contact with at this office has been fantastic! Very friendly, provides excellent care and is just a great place to visit. I would highly recommend making Smallwood and McKown-Smallwood your dentist.

I enjoyed every minute of my appointment. Everyone is so nice. Smallwood & McKown-Smallwood DDS not only delivers superb dental care, they treat the patient as a real human person, not just a mouth. I went home inspired, threw out the peanut brittle, and started to faithfully use my water pic.

They asked me to deal with my insurance to figure it out. I would call back to the Smallwood office and they would have no idea what it was about. This happened about 4 times. My 180 dollar bill which was paid the day of treatment was followed up by about a 600$ bill. After saying they would help us out they kept sending bills threatening legal action against us if we didn't pay. This place is all sweet talk but wolf's in disguise. Used our covid 19 relief to get this dentist off our backs. Also they told me I had cavities one year but when I asked them to show me where they couldn't and then changed their mind and decided I didn't have cavities? Some shady insurance stuff going on here covered up by incompetence and ignorance. If their actions were as nice as they are in person there would be no problem. Customer be damned they are getting your money.

They said they would look into it after I contacted them. we are now 20 months from the procedure and they sent another notice for us to pay the $600 bill with no further explanation. My circumstances were also challenging as I was in school and we just had a newborn. I understand that this is a business and they have to make money to but this has not been the best experience. The dentist and dental hygienists were very nice and I wish them well.

THIS OFFICE IS THE BEST. All of the staff is great, the place is spotless and they are so accommodating. I would HIGHLY recommend their office to anyone needing a new dentist. Text reminders for appointments, good location, good treatment, very satisfied with my experience. Switched from Hamblin and it was a great change to make. A world of difference in atmosphere.
