I graduated from Westwood High School where I participated in the orchestra (trumpet) and sports (basketball). Our basketball team was State runner up my senior year. I received many awards and honors including Player of the Year for the State of Arizona and being recognized by Coach and Athlete Magazine as an All American.
Following high school, I attended Mesa Community College for a year before serving a two year mission for my church in Denmark. I eventually graduated from ASU with a BA in Chemistry. A few years later, I graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas with a DDS degree.
I am married to the former Colleen Townsend. We have six children four boys and two girls and 13 grandchildren. My family is very important to me and my life has revolved around my wife and children and now grandchildren. We enjoy traveling, going to the lake, movies, bowling, going to plays, and eating at our favorite restaurants on occasion among many other family activities.
I really enjoy being a dentist. Its rewarding to work with our patients in such a way that they want to come back to us. We are blessed with many long term relationships with patients and now see children of children that we treated many years ago.
After my mission, I graduated from BYU majoring in Business Administration in 2002. After graduation, I started dental school at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. My wife and I loved living in San Francisco and met many wonderful people while in dental school.
After I graduated from dental school, I spent over three years on active duty as a dentist in the United States Army. We were stationed in Germany at a small base 25 miles from Nuremberg. We loved our experience living overseas. We were able to visit many wonderful places and experience another culture.
We returned to Arizona in August 2008 and have since been practicing here at Shumway Dental Care. My wife, Autumn, and I have three wonderful boys named Drew, Quin, and Max. We enjoy spending time together as a family playing board games, watching our boys play on sports teams, cheering on the Phoenix Suns, and spending time out doors.
Dr. Tyler Shumway was born and raised in Mesa, AZ. After graduating from Mesa High School, he attended Brigham Young University where he graduated with a degree in Exercise Science, and then he attended The University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco.
In 2015 Tyler moved back to Arizona and started working at Shumway Dental Care. He has greatly enjoyed working with his father, Dr. Andy, and his brother, Dr. Joel, as well as the entire staff at Shumway Dental Care.

Going to the dentist creates extreme anxiety for me. Dr. Joel and the staff at Shumway Dental have made my journey much more pleasant than I ever expected. Best dental experience everytime, I love that it's a true family practice. The front office is so kind and helpful, I never have a preference on hygienist because they all are amazing. True excellent patient care and service which is rare these days everywhere. Love the whole staff!!

Everyone at this place is awesome! My hygienist, Lisa, is always very gentle, but more importantly, she is very informative. This is far and away the best group of dentists and dental hygienists I have ever been to. I've recommended them to all my friends, and my entire family goes there now too.

Fear. Fear is often a feeling when you visit the dentist. When you have an appointment with Dr Joel Shumway you just feel the tension float away. Dr Joel makes you feel very comfortable. He is kind and his staff is outstanding.. I highly recommend his practice for getting the best dental care in this area.

I had several teeth extracted today. Dr Tyler is my dentist. The entire session was very very comfortable. I felt it was performed in a very timely manner. Now I am sitting at home with no discomfort and I have only taken regular ibuprofen. The staff is always helpful and kind.

I just moved to Arizona in January and had to find a new dentist to get some crown work done. I have to say I'm really loving Shumway Dental. Tyler is an amazing DR and does amazing work. He is so polite and so kind and I am so thankful for all the great work he has done on me. I highly recommend Shumway dental to anyone looking for a new dentist that does awesome work! I had to get 4 crowns and Tyler did an amazing job, they look and feel amazing. I really love this place and have already referred my husband and stepson and they also love this place! Shumway sent me two movie tickets for the referrals which was so sweet! You will not be disappointed if you choose Shumway as your dental family, the whole staff is amazing. Thanks Shumway for all the awesome dental work you have provided me, I really appreciate it!

The dentist was nice as was the office staff. My interaction with my Dental hygienist, Breghanna was phenomenal. She was incredibly nice and did a thorough job on my teeth cleaning. I sincerely appreciate her attention to detail.

Hate going to the dentist "BUT" I must said since changing to Sumway I don't mind going as much. The staff is so friendly and Dr Shumway is a gentle giant, easy to talk to and puts me at ease, that I forget my fears. They have a new young lady that cleans my teeth (Bre) that is "VERY GOOD" and patient. Although I still do not like to go I do not dread it as much.
