In order to practice orthodontics, both doctors spent 11 years in training (four years of college, four years of dental school, and three years of orthodontics residency). During their orthodontic training, they spent three years learning the skills needed to manage tooth movement (orthodontics) and to guide facial development.
They are both Board Certified Orthodontists. ABO Board Certification is a voluntary credential that represents an orthodontists personal and public commitment to the standards of specialty practice and lifelong learning.
Gone are the days of painful headgear, clunky bands on every tooth, and overly tight stainless steel wires. Todays orthodontic treatment is much more comfortable than it used to be. Thanks, in part, to shape-memory NiTi wires.
With the same technology that NASA uses, NiTi wires exert a continuous force against the teeth to move them in the right direction. This gets rid of the need for wire tightening. This means you spend less time in braces, and the time you do spend is more comfortable.

I had the pleasure of stopping by their Cabin John location and speaking with their Treatment Coordinator Madison and Dr. Debra about seeking possible treatment. They both were able to answer every question I had and reassured me on the entire process, specifically Invisalign. I ended up taking the first steps for treatment the same day. Nothing but positive things to say about their staff.

Dr. Debra Shin is a great provider! She listens to her patients, and she explains what she observes in a detailed manner. She then explains the options and details on the treatment. I was there because my upper front teeth were chipping from hitting the lower front teeth. It was nothing Invisalign couldn't fix. I started the treatment right before the COVID-19 lockdown. Dr. Shin was available for virtual visits via video calls to answer any questions or concerns. She really cares about her patients. I highly recommend using Shin Orthodontics for your orthodontic needs.

Dr Debra is very nice and professional. I chose invisalign treatment, and it took me about 2 years. Finally, I am satisfied with the result. I went to Rockville office and Potomac office during the treatment. Potomac is new one. It is clean. FYI..DO NOT input the address into Google Map. It will navigate you to the wrong place. Click "Directions" from the Google search or Dr Shin website. Then, the gps can provide the correct route.

Really enjoyed my initial consult here! Dr. Shin was very clear and concise in my recommended treatment, and even in explaining why she recommended as such. They make great use of technology to provide visuals in treatment. Additionally, the office is very clean and made me feel safe and comfortable during the visit.

[UPDATE]: I started my treatment back in January and already started to see results! I am so happy I decided to pick this office to take me through the process. I have not received treatment yet however, I can speak about my first consultation experience. I was floored by the beauty of the office and the cleanliness. Dr. Shin took me back promptly and to my surprise I was the only patient in the office. During COVID, it is unnerving to have to take my mask off, but I felt very comfortable in her hands. The financial counselor, Stefany, was thourough in explaining my options. Dr. Shin was personable and friendly. Getting braces is a huge decision for me but, Dr. Shin made me feel like the end results will be worth the cost and time of braces.

I completed Invisalign at a different practice years ago and needed a new set of final retainers made. I saw Dr. D. Shin at the Potomac location and she was friendly and professional. The office is very new and clean, and all of the admin/support people I've been in communication with have been great. I've also been to the Rockville location. There is ample parking at both places.

Dr.Shin and every one of the employees that have assisted and helped are all so wonderful and kind. In every appointment, they never fail to make me and my siblings, who also come here, feel welcomed and comfortable. My sister also came here and I'm sure they treated her just as well as they have with me and that's why my mom recommended everyone else, including me, to have my teeth aligned at Shin Orthodontist. Not only are they amiable, but they're also professional. They know what they are doing and inform you along the way. Their transparency made me knew that I could trust them. All the patience with my invisilign was worth it; the process and the results were all so satisfactory. Dr.Shin always made sure to ask about how we were feeling about our progress and considered our input in combination with her advice. As importantly, the front desk have amazing people that care for you! I recently went to Shin Orthodontics (Cabin John location) for a consult on InBrace. I was very impressed with the office environment and professional setting. I met with Dr. Richard Shin, and he gave me detailed information on the options available for my situation. He did a full 3d scan of my teeth as part of the consultation, and showed me the results on-screen during our discussion. Within a week or two, I was given a detailed cost estimate for the treatment option. I would recommend Shin Orthodontics to anyone who may be thinking about Orthodontic treatment.

I just recently finished my two years braces and jaw surgery journey with Doctor Debra Shin and my surgeon. Doctor Shin is very skilled. At the beginning I thought I might need to have one tooth removed to be able to fit them properly, but with the help of Doctor Debra, I am able to keep all my tooth and have a great smile now. Highly recommended!
