The fundamental mission of Shawnee Health Service is to improve the health and welfare of southern Illinois and southwest Indiana residents through the promotion, development and administration of quality, comprehensive health and social services, while efficiently utilizing limited resources. This will include assessing and serving the needs of the underserved/vulnerable populations and designing programs and services which are culturally and linguistically appropriate.

  • To provide a comprehensive, coordinated network of health centers and services which are community oriented and responsive to the overall health needs of the service area population, including integrated primary medical and behavioral health care. Additional specialty services include, dental care, psychiatry, OB/GYN, pharmacy, nutrition counseling, and related social services.
  • To provide a system of health and social services which are oriented to the specialized needs of underserved/vulnerable populations such as migrant farmworkers, teens, and the elderly. Services include outreach, case management, education, protective services, advocacy, in-home services, and related support services.
  • To promote, plan, develop, and evaluate new and improved systems of health and social services while remaining sensitive to and supporting collaboration with existing provider organizations and agencies.
  • To systematically pursue such other compatible services, products or efforts which would promote the continued financial viability of Shawnee Health Service as an organization while improving the health status of the underserved/vulnerable population.
  • Services should emphasize the promotion of health and the prevention of illness and should be sensitive to the psycho-social, cultural, environmental, and economic, as well as the physiological factors which impact on the health of individuals and communities.

    Terrible place, gone downhill the past two years. My daughter is an established patient, been goung here since she was 5 and now she has 2 cavities causing mouth puan and they say she cant be seen for 4 months. New patients at new dentists get that length of time for appt. When i tried to complain to the receptionist she started getting snarky with me. I said " youre my daughters dentist right" She said" noim sharon" I said, " dont be facetious youre shawnee dental righ?" " no im sharon"--she was gettinv me angry, i said "gees, you represent shawnee dental?" She said "no, you have a nice day" Absutely despicable customer courtesy and disrespect

    The fact that no one accepts Molina healthcare so basically low income ppl dont get the dental service they need in Carbondale is already sickening . But I called shawnee dental and tierd to make an appointment . I was told I was consider a new patient but they looked my name up and told me my information and that I hadn't been there since 2016. So why u still have my information. But I'm a new patient?! It just doesn't make any since to me

    Poorly run, unavailable, high staff turnover, refuse to make appointments ahead. They let my niece that needed a simple filling go so long by refusing to make an appointment that she eventually needed a root canal, my daughter was snapped, "No it doesn't hurt" at by a hygienist named Kathy on her FIRST cleaning at 3 years. My kid wasn't even crying, she just said, "That hurts," when Kathy was digging with floss. Kathy was ALWAYS rough and rude every time she cleaned kids, so I couldn't figure out why she chose it. And my kids are really quiet and well behaved. So my kid just endured it but has hated cleanings privately ever since. Marissa is good at the adult cleanings, but she's overworked and the only adult hygienist last I checked. The children's hygienists they have now are fine, but I scheduled my youngest 2 kids last cleanings BACK TO BACK and they SEPARATED one of my little kids from me when we got there and did them at the same time in separate locations. I stayed with the youngest, but I was inwardly furious. Um, no. Never again will I agree to that. They constantly cancel appointments --if they offer a Friday appointment I can guarantee they'll have someone "out of office," that day connected to the weekend. You WILL get a "We need to reschedule, but we're booked out 6 mos," call. Refuse ANY Friday appointment. They've repeatedly cancelled appointments when we're THERE checking in claiming they called and voicemail was full. Checked and no messages or missed calls each time, so that's frustrating. My husband has missed work because of their incompetence. We have Medicaid--all Medicaid clients get treated like second class citizens. Have fun finding someone else--this business knows they're the area's only option, and their care reflects that position of superiority. My kids qualify for 6 mo. cleanings. They're lucky if they get yearly cleanings with how many excuses Shawnee come up with. They can't keep good staff--Kimbro was awesome; of course they lost him. Not sure how they treat their doctors, but there's a high turnover, so it can't be that great. Another pet peeve is their complete lack of respect for private information under HIPAA. When you check in, one of their employees will "verify" by yelling out your whole address, phone number, DOB and everything else for the whole waiting room to hear. Early in my time as a client I had one employee ask me to state my SSN IN FRONT OF THE WAITING ROOM PEOPLE. I asked for a paper to write it down instead. I go to church with a family that is forced to use Shawnee for foster children and they HATE it. If you have no other options and don't mind the runaround then this is the place for you. As soon as I have another Medicaid option, we're gone. Till then, I'm stuck doing this song and dance with Shawnee that I've been doing at least 12 years.

    This place shouldn't even be in business. Never have availability. Call and call and call and it's still ALWAYS the same line,, "no openings just call back". Disgraceful! Even for children now these days !! Wow. Can't even get them in.

    I brought my brother in today for a filling, and was turned away because we were 9 minutes late. When telling us that he could not be seen, the receptionist told me there was a 10 minute grace period, which we were within. She waited 11-12 minutes at the desk before even asking the dentist if we could still be seen, so we appeared to be 20 minutes late, rather than 9. My little brother is autistic, and so are my 2 children. I have anywhere from 1 to 5 appointments a day to manage between the 3 of them, so we are frequently between 5-10 minutes late, especially when they are having meltdowns. My brother has not even let the dentist work on his teeth for a few years now, and they still want us to come in to "try again" just so he can have a meltdown rather than putting him on the year long waitlist for sedation to actually get his teeth fixed. I have also tried calling over 10 times now to get my 2 children an appointment here, and I'm always told to call back in 2 weeks to try again. If you have special needs children, I wouldn't even bother with this dentist unless you have no other choice. Cardinal glennon does dental work with sedation as well.

    I have never had great luck with the dentist office until my last two dentist appointments. Dr Olumayomide Coker is heaven sent to shawnee dental. Today Monday I called the office because I had a broken tooth with a exposed nerve. I told them i could not eat, drink, or even sleep. They got me in by 2 that very day after being told I would have to get it pulled on may 2nd on my prior visit on friday. During my visit she had to numb the area. I was ready to scream when the needle hit my gum. She calmy talked to me and started telling me to breath in and out of my nose until she finished. While she was doing the actual extraction she was being very gentle and wasnt yanking. She kept checking on me to make sure I was ok. The tooth was huge and very stubborn but she still remained very caring and gentle. I have never had a dentist a as caring and worried about her patient's. I am so lucky to have her as my dentist.

    I had an infection left ER refused to see me due to missing previous appointment I was NOT aloud to see dentist for 2 months Spoke with Jana she was useless as a clinical manager

    Wouldnt even give a star. Called 2 weeks ago to make 2 new patient appointments with a pediatric dentist. I was informed they only book 2 weeks out, and to call on nov 2nd to make an appt. I called november 1st just to be safe, only to be told there is no available appointments to call back nov. 15th. I told them "this is what yall told me 2 weeks ago" only to be told, this is our policy call back in 2weeks and TRY again." I asked "so i have to call and just hope I can get an appointment?" To which they replied "yes." If i couldnt make an appointment, how was everyone else making an appointment when the office had just opened if they werent taking appointments until the 2nd? But the 2nd-15th was already booked. since when do we have to repeatedly call to make an appointment? Also, if anyone else can make a new patient appointment why cant I? I explained 1 of my childs teeth problems and how hes in pain and she said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. DEAD SILENCE. WILL NEVER TRY TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT HERE AGAIN.. HATEFUL STAFF, THEN BLAMING IT ON THE SHORTAGE OF EMPLOYEES IS JUST AWFUL BUSINESS PRACTICES. FILING A DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINT BECAUSE THEY WERE NICE UNTIL I SAID WE HAD STATE INSURANCE.

    It's hard to get an appt, pretty much impossible if you're not already an established patient, which does have more to do with the administration than the local office. Quality of care of hit or miss, so is bedside manner. Dr Harrington is way too rough. Dr Schall is really compassionate and calming. It's an ok place if it's all you can afford and all you can get into.

    This office cannot keep Dentist. Appointments are scheduled out months in advance. I've gone a couple of times now and they haven't even looked at my teeth, complete waste of time. I even brought with me copies of my xrays from 2 months ago and a current treatment plan that I had done at that time. Refused to do anything until they had the xrays from the other Dentist (which was what I brought to the appointment with me). Also, front desk clerk was very rude. Asked for my insurance card then just put papers on a clip board and pushed it to me. Didn't say a word. Not please fill these out. Just very 'cold' manner.

    I call because I had a dental emergency being that I have severe pain in my jaw. Went to ER and had a CT scan done and they said the cause of pain was from a tooth. I call and ask if they can take me in as soon as possible as the lain is unbearable. Receptionist was rude and basically told me they would not take me in and that I would need to find a different dentist to take me in and help with pain. If I could give zero stars I would. Horrible customer service. Not to mention they hung up on me when I asked what I am supposed to do about the pain.

    I called them to see if they could remove a cavity that was causing me extreme pain, with swelling and such. But when I finally got through, they said they weren't accepting new patients, not even emergency ones. I can hardly eat anything without it hurting my jaw, but I guess that's not important

    Will not be back here. They ask personal questions which have nothing to do with healthcare and want to charge you for an office visit only it must be done over the phone. Yes, charge you to talk to your doctor over the phone. No blood pressure check, no pulse check, no weight check, no temperature check, and no oxygen level check. In other words, no healthcare.

    I would even give 1 star honestly. Understand Covid made a mess but you r open and only scheduling appointments for people that had appointments during covid. What about your patients period, been calling since May and told to call back each month for a machine to come n for covid. It's there and now still can see you. Hope u have enough business with one's that had appointments.

    Will not be back here. They ask personal questions which have nothing to do with healthcare and want to charge you for an office visit only it must be done over the phone. Yes, charge you to talk to your doctor over the phone. No blood pressure check, no pulse check, no weight check, no temperature check, and no oxygen level check. In other words, no healthcare.
