Dr. Steven S. Shaw obtained his undergraduate degree from the University ofMaine andearned his dental degree from Southern Illinois University, School of Dental Medicine. He is a Maine native and grew up here in Portland. He served as an officer in the United StatesNavy from 1998 until 2012. Dr. Shaw was stationed in Kuwait and Bahrain with assignments in Europe and the United States. Dr. Shaw has 24 years of experience in the dental field working in practices in Maine and Massachusetts in addition to the United States Navy. He has vast experience in cosmetic dentistry and has also furthered his dental education at Columbia University in the field of Implant Dentistry. He is a certified Invisalign provider. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Maine Dental Association and the Greater Portland Dental Association.
Dr. Nichols attended the University of New England College of Dental Medicine, where he graduated with honors from Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award, and the American Academy of Periodontology student award. Growing up in Portland, he attended Deering High School and Lincoln Middle School. After high school, he sought the adventurous lifestyle and moved to Salt Lake City, UT earning his B.S. in Biology at the University of Utah. Dr. Nichols enjoys working with his patients and provides care in a compassionate manner that is individualized to each patient. Professionally, he is a member of the ADA, MDA and Casco Bay Study Club. In his free time, he enjoys fly fishing, snowboarding, camping, hiking, golfing and kayaking.
Kathy is a licensed radiographer and a board certified dental assistant and has been in the dental profession for over thirty years. She enjoys learning new things that will give her knowledge in her life and work. With a positive attitude, she loves to create a caring and comfortable environment for all patients and her goal is to make them leave our office with a smile. Having grown up in Maine, she enjoys hiking and kayaking.
What I love most about being a dental assistant is building relationships with our patients.. Christina works side by side with Dr. Nichols in the operatories to create the most beautiful smile for our patients.She is a registered dental radiographer who also oversees the daily flow of the dentists schedule. I learn something new every day and that is one of the things I love most about this job. This practice has taught me more than I have ever expected to learn in a dental office. I look forward to the many years ahead and all the new experiencesi will have. Christina is a Maine native who enjoys spending her spare time with family and friends and exploring all that Maine has to offer.
Katherine has been an office manager since 2008. She has a BSC in Engineering from Loughborough University, U.K. and an MSc in Management from Birmingham University, U.K. She has worked in many organisations during her career, ranging from tourism to the Olympics and in a variety of roles from managerial to crowd management services. At Dr. Shaws office, Katherine oversees the implementation of office policies & procedures ans is responsible for budgeting and personnel organisation. As part of the office team, she also provides support to all aspects of the business. Katherine is of British & Greek origin and has spent most of her life in Athens, Greece until she moved to Portland, Maine. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and travelling as much as she can.
Lacey was born and raised in Pittston, Maine. She obtained a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of New England in May 2014. She has been with our practice since December 2014. Lacey stays up to date on the most current dental treatments through continuing education courses. She enjoys getting to know our patients as they come see us through the years. She also likes being part of a dental practice that continually improves patient care with the most up-to-date dental treatments and technologies. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, traveling in exploration of new places and spending time with her family, friends and her various animals.
Megan has a BS in Human Biology from USM and a BS in Dental Hygiene from UNE. She is a Maine native who loves to cater to her patients individual hygiene needs ensuring their optimal oral health. She really enjoys helping our patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their visit. She has an adventurous spirit and you will often listen to her tell stories about hiking, skiing and exploring the great outdoors.

First visit to this office today and I was so impressed! Probably the first time in my life that I had a pleasant experience at a dentist. Dr. Shaw was so thorough and friendly and he explained everything he was doing and seeing. And my cleaning with Megan was great. She was so enthusiastic and took the time to do a really good job. Front desk staff was also lovely. Thanks for a great experience!

I was referred to this dentist by a friend of mine. I was very frustrated with my then dentist, who suggested dental work amounting to more than $7000! After a consult with Dr. Shaw on the same issues, he suggested work amounting to $3000. What a relief! He worked on my teeth and my issues over the course of the last few years and not only does the cosmetic work look spectacular, it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. THANK YOU!

Went to this dentist after multiple referrals from friends and even a neighborhood app recommendation. If you are looking for a great dentist and staff experience, look no further! Have been to this office for multiple issues over the years and have always had a pain free experience. So glad I found them!

Just another drill and bill scammer. Went 6 different times for a simple filling and it either created a food trap or the fillings would fall out. Dr. Shaw is lazy and won't drill out the old filling before making a new one, causing it to fall out repeatedly. He does this in order to drill and bill you and scam you out of your money. Don't waste your money and your teeth with this snake oil dentist.

Dr. Shaw is a very thorough dentist. He spent an hour at my first visit checking my mouth and each tooth. My previous dentist whom I saw twice, listed off all these fillings I would need the following year as he had used the maximum allowed by my insurance, Delta Dental for that year in December when I saw him. I switched to Dr. Shaw and after inspecting my teeth, Dr Shaw congratulated me on my excellent home care and said I didn't have any cavities! I did have one chipped tooth which he fixed, that was it. No cavities. A few months later, a crown fell off. He saw me that day and glued it back on. No problems. I highly recommend this dentist.

I recently moved and was looking for a local dentist. I was pleasantly surprised at my great experience with BackCove Dental the other day. My previous dentist wasn't bad, but finding a great dentist and dental hygienist really made a difference. I highly recommend Dr. Shaw and the team at BackCove Dental.

I had a outstanding experience with Back Cove Dental. After having a horrible toothache for 2 days, they promptly got me in with Dr Nichols. And he performed excellent work from beginning to end. He was patient, informative, and showed passion in his work. Would recommend to anyone

I wasn't a current patient of Dr. Shaw. I had an emergency dental problem. They found an opening and got me in promptly. Dr. Nichols his associate did the tooth removal. Lot of work for him, no pain for me during the removal and what a relief. I didn't realize how much I had been putting up with. great price too. Thank you

Great experience from beginning to end. From the office to the staff everything is amazing and so comfortable. Scheduling is very easy, hygienist's are amazing and Dr. Shaw is the best. Dr. Shaw always performs at his best, explaining everything he does. Sitting in a dental chair without sadation should tell you all. On the other hand, the hygienist's are excellent, very friendly and professional. Once my hygienist completed the cleaning, she reviewed with me the proper way to floss and brush and help me understand what is best for my hygiene. Highly recommended. Looking forward for my another dental treatment soon <3

I have been going to this office since 1995. I was a patient of Dr. Nelson who has now retired. Dr. Shaw has taken over the practice. I am not one to write reviews but I wanted to write a review for Dr. Shaw. Besides having a strong educational background and an interesting work history, he is also a good listener, he is kind, gentle, attentive, and thorough. The dentist can sometimes be a nerve racking experience as we all know. I have continued to feel at ease in this office. I recently have moved all three of my children out of pediatric dentistry and into his practice. My son recently had a tooth filled by Dr. Shaw. He told me it was the easiest filling he had had yet. Out of the mouth of babes...... I recommend Dr. Shaw to anyone who is looking for a new dentist or new to the area.
