Dr. Rob Semtner has been practicing dentistry with his wife Dr. Mona Semtner in Roanoke since 2005. He grew up in Blackstone, VA attending Nottoway High School. He attended Virginia Tech and earned a B. S. in Biology. While attending Virginia Tech, he was a co-op student with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and it was during this time that he became interested in dentistry. Dr. Semtner suffered from a genetic defect that resulted in 15 congenitally missing teeth and poor growth of his bones in his mouth. 7 years of orthodontic treatment, surgery to break and realign his top and bottom jaws, placement of dental implants and crowns followed. There are very few things in dentistry that I have not been through as a patient and I think that allows me to be more caring as a dentist. I feel I have a unique perspective since I have been through so much as a patient.
Following Virginia Tech, Dr. Semtner began his dental training at Virginia Commonwealth University / Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry. He graduated with honors and numerous awards in May 2000. He then continued his training by completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at Naval Dental Center Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, VA with the United States Navy where he earned the Directors Award for Clinical Excellence. In 2003 he was presented a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his service as Dental Department Head aboard the USS Seattle (AOE-3). Following his service in the US Navy, Dr. Semtner left active duty and entered into private practice. He has pursued advanced training in a broad array of dental services including Laser dentistry, Implant dentistry, Invisalign, CAD-CAM dentistry, Dental Sleep Medicine, Complex cosmetic and restorative dentistry, Periodontal plastic surgery, and Esthetic Dentistry.
Dr. Semtner is currently a member of the Air Force Reserve where he serves as Dental OIC for the 440th Airlift Wing. Away from the office, Dr. Rob Semtner is a husband to Dr. Mona Semtner, a father to two wonderful boys and two beautiful girls, a coach of t-ball, baseball, and basketball teams, and a player for his church and a town league softball team. He has volunteered at the Mission of Mercy project since he began practicing in Roanoke. He and Dr. Mona are fans of Big Band music and swing dance wherever they have the opportunity.

Are you seeking a more beautiful looking smile but not looking for the hassle of traditional braces? Invisalign might be the perfect solution for you! Many adult patients think that correcting misalignment is reserved for kids and teenagers, but thanks to Invisalign, no one even has to know your wearing braces. The 'aligners' are composed of plastic trays which completely remove the need for any metal fixtures. These trays are virtually invisible and can be removed at any time. This makes activities like eating, brushing and flossing much easier than traditional orthodontic braces. Invisalign also requires less visits to the dentist or orthodontist than traditional braces.
Invisalign starts with a visit to our office where we will take impressions of your teeth for creating a 3d model. Your teeth's moldings are then sent to a dental technician that will work with us to create a digital treatment plan. Our doctors will customize a full plan for each patient based their bite and corrective needs. The plan is then shipped to a lab where your entire course of aligners are custom fabricated to fit your precise moldings. These aligners are then shipped back to our office and the doctor will provide you with them upon your next visit. Each aligner would be worn for a course of about 2 weeks. You will then need to visit our offices roughly once every two months for check-ups.
Both traditional braces and Invisalign will treat a wide variety of cases that include teeth crowding, spacing issues, crossbites, over-bites and under-bites. The best thing about Invisalign however, is that it virtually invisible to the naked eye and can be taken out whenever you need. This allows for better oral hygiene and more enjoyable meals. Patients with traditional braces have often complained of discomfort due to the metal fixtures involved, but with Invisalign the uncomfortable metal is replaced with smooth plastic.
Length of your Invisalign treatment depends on the patient. Sometimes it is only necessary to use the system to close a few spaces or treat minor malocclusion. Because each case is different, treatment can last anywhere fromabout 3 months to 16 months or longer.
Invisalign treatment is great for both teens and adults who's malocclusion as ideal for treatment. Other problems may exist with a patients bite that may require a more traditional orthodontic approach. Each patient should be evaluated on a case by case basis. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
