As a parent, there are plenty of questions that will come up about their health and development. Seeing those first tiny teeth coming in can be especially exciting! Your childs baby teeth give them new ways to speak and eat while serving as placeholders for their permanent teeth. When your child reaches this milestone, its time to start thinking about building healthy habits. At Scott Edwards DDS, you can find all of the answers youre looking for to give your child the best care possible. Lets take a closer look at what every parent should know about baby teeth and caring for their childs smile.

You might be surprised to find out that babies arent born without teeth. Thats right! Babies are born with about 20 baby teeth hidden below the surface of the gums, just waiting to erupt. Your baby will start teething around six months of age, and teeth will continue to erupt for up to three years.

While there is a general order in which baby teeth erupt, every child is unique, so if they deviate from the norm, you dont need to worry! However, if you have any questions about your childs baby teeth, our team in East Memphis or Midtown is always happy to help.

Baby teeth are susceptible to cavities and tooth decay. Compared to permanent teeth, baby teeth have a very thin layer of enamel, making them more prone to decay. This can even cause infections in the permanent teeth below the surface.

Babies arent born with the bacteria that cause cavities to form but are transferred from parents to children. The best way to help avoid this is to maintain consistent oral hygiene for yourself, too! Speaking of brushing, this brings us to our next point.

The best time to start brushing your babys teeth is when the first tooth erupts. It may seem early or unnecessary since they arent putting those tiny chompers to use just yet, but brushing is essential for healthy baby teeth! Brushing your babys teeth twice a day is the best way to fight tooth decay and teach them healthy habits for their oral health. Here are a few tips for helping your child brush:

Your child will likely need some help brushing their teeth effectively until theyre around eight years old. When you brush and floss your teeth together regularly, your child will develop a positive attitude towards dental hygiene and a healthy smile!

Scott Edwards DDS - General dentist in Memphis, TN

After your child has a quick tour of the office, well get started! Our dental hygienist will talk to them about what were doing every step of the way. Well brush their teeth and make sure everything is developmentally on track. This is a pain-free visit and focused on getting your child used to the dentist and cleaning their teeth.

Following their cleaning, Dr. Edwards or Dr. Prince will take a closer look at your childs teeth and talk with you about any questions or concerns you may have. Well take as much time as you need to help you feel confident caring for your childs smile. After your childs first visit, they should have regular check-ups every six months or as recommended by your dentist.

Giving your child a healthy diet is one of the best things you can do for their baby teeth! Sugary foods contribute to tooth decay, so its essential to limit the number of sugary foods your child eats. Nearly all foods have at least a small amount of sugar, so its important to brush your childs teeth after every meal. If you cant brush right away, have them rinse their mouth with water to rinse away any leftover food particles.

Its common for children to suck their thumb or a pacifier for comfort, but if this habit persists for too long, it can cause damage to their permanent teeth. If your child uses a pacifier, give them a clean one every time. It is recommended to stop this habit by age three.

In a perfect world, a solid dental hygiene routine would be enough to keep our smiles bright and beautiful throughout our lives. We wouldnt have to worry about cavities and tooth decay. Wed never break or lose a permanent tooth. Unfortunately, thats not the world we live in, since cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and oral trauma can happen from time to time, even when you do take good care of your teeth and gums.

There is good news, though! When life happens, theres a reliable way to repair your teeth and ensure theyre fully functional and look great once more. The office of Scott Edwards, DDS, is proud to offer patients a variety of restorative options to restore function and comfort to your teeth, mouth, and jaw.

Our Memphis office uses cutting-edge technology and the highest-quality materials to provide patients with natural-looking crowns, bridges, implants, and veneers. These restorations are fully functional and offer exceptional results, and we offer a variety of restorative options to meet your smile needs and goals.

Crowns are created after taking impressions and measurements of the teeth involved. Each dental restoration is customized to match the natural tooth for a perfect fit that blends in with the surrounding teeth! Theyre a long-lasting option with an average lifespan of about fifteen years (and sometimes longer.)

Before we place a crown for you, well need to prepare the tooth. This involves Dr. Edwards removing a portion of the enamel from around your tooth, allowing the crown to encompass it. They will then use water-based glue to attach a temporary crown. Once your final crown is ready, well have you return to our Memphis office so we can bond it in place, leaving you with a beautiful and fully functional smile!

If you have one or more missing teeth in the same area, a dental bridge may be a good option for teeth replacement. You will need to have enough healthy teeth to serve as anchors for the bridge, however. Dental bridges are composed of a false tooth or teeth that are supported by dental crowns. The appliance is placed on the natural teeth surrounding the gap, bridging it to improve both the form and function of the teeth.

If youve lost any of your permanent teeth, dental implants can serve as an advanced, long-term alternative to traditional dentures. Its important to deal with tooth loss as soon as possible. After losing a tooth, the jawbone will no longer receive stimulation in that space. Without stimulation, the body thinks that the jawbone is no longer necessary in that area, and will start leaching calcium from it. This process is called resorption, and it can lead to devastating changes in the face, including a sunken appearance.

During this procedure, Dr. Edwards will implant a titanium rod under the gums and secure it to the jawbone. These small titanium posts are designed to replace missing teeth in a way that mimics the function of natural tooth roots. The bone and metal will then fuse together through something called osseointegration. Once this part of the process is complete, we can secure an artificial tooth to the post and attach a permanent dental crown. The result is teeth that look, feel, and behave like your natural ones!

Veneers are custom-made shells crafted from a thin tooth-colored material, like porcelain or plastic, and designed to cover the front side of teeth. Veneers can improve teeth that have excess spacing issues, as well as teeth that are worn, chipped, stained, or crooked. Because veneers can correct such a wide variety of dental problems, they are one of the most popular dental procedures around!

Having veneers placed is usually an irreversible process since its necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your tooth to accommodate the shell. You may need to avoid certain foods and beverages if you have veneers, since things like coffee, tea, and red wine can stain or discolor them. Veneers are generally known for being very durable and long-lasting, but youll have to be a bit careful to make sure that they dont stain, chip, or crack.

After years of dental anxiety and traumatizing incidents, I had no hope that I would find a good dentist. It was through the referral of a specialist that I found Dr. Edwards and I am so grateful for it. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, so much that there is an instant feeling of comfort as you undergo whatever procedures you may need. I trust both Dr. Edwards and Dr. Prince, in both skill and practice, and I cannot thank them and the entire staff enough for all that they do. They're the best.
