Dr. Schwed began his career in healthcare as a registered nurse, specializing in oncology and chemotherapy. As the chemotherapy coordinator of a major New York City hospital, I treated patients with all types of cancer, including oropharyngeal (oral) cancer. It was during this time that I realized that the best way to lower ones risk of debilitating disease is to educate people while theyre still young. When kids start down a healthy path early in life, they dramatically increase their chances of staying healthy in the future.
Dr. Schwed earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from New York University and completed his advanced training in pediatric dentistry at Brookdale University Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He is Board-Certified in Pediatric Dentistry. Since graduating, Dr. Schwed has continued to pursue advanced education in the biological basis of tooth decay and oral disease, and has a particular interest in the oral-systemic connection, which is the idea that oral health has a direct and profound influence on overall health and well-being. He has also pursued advanced education in the use of lasers to treat oral disease and correct oral structural defects, such as tongue and lip ties.
Dr. Schwed and his wife Tova moved to Dallas three years ago with their four children after 13 years of living in New York Citys historic Lower East Side. When not in the office, he enjoys reading Harry Potter to his children, camping, and playing lead guitar in his band.
He could not have been more right! At Schwed Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that tooth decay is not an inevitable part of childhood. With proper education and a concerted effort, children can grow up with a healthy mouth and may never require surgical treatment for tooth decay.
Just as you wouldnt miss a well-child visit with your pediatrician, the twice-yearly check-up and cleaning as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is essential to ensuring your childs oral health and proper development.And since its easier to treat a small issue than a big one, its essential to detect problems as soon as they arise. Often, a prescription toothpaste and some dietary changes are all that is required to stop a new cavity from developing!
Fluoride is a natural compound that has been proven to strengthen tooth enamel, which is the first defense against cavities. Fluoride gel, foam, or varnish is applied to the teeth for a few moments, but the benefits are long lasting.
Dental sealants are made of a clear protective coating that is painted into the grooves on the biting surface of childrens molars. Once dried, sealants act as a protective barrier between the teeth and harmful bacteria.
Sometimes dental problems begin where they cannot be seen, such as on the surfaces between two teeth. The standard of care for detecting cavities is through periodic digital X-rays. The procedure is completely safe, and because the X-rays are digital, Dr. Schwed can share the results with you immediately on the computer screen.
Do you have a budding athlete in the family? In that case, a sports mouthguard is a must. Made of smooth, comfortable plastic, a sports mouthguard protects teeth, lips, gums and tongue from injury. Dr. Schwed takes a mold of your childs mouth to create a customized sports mouthguard for him or her to wear during play or practice.
We understand that going to the dentist can cause some young patients to feel anxious. But while some children only experience a very small amount of anxiety, others have more serious needs that can only be addressed with sedation dentistry.
Dr. Schwed is proud to offer laser dentistry with Solea, a computer-aided, CO2 laser system that is FDA-approved for both hard and soft tissue dental procedures. Because treatment with Solea is so comfortable and virtually pain-free, most patients do not require any anesthesia. That means there are no needles, no drills, and no lingering sensation of numbness after a procedure is completed.
In the not too distant past, fillings and crowns were the only ways we could treat teens who had developed cavities. Now, if were able to catch tooth decay early enough, we have access to a third, much more conservative option. With resin infiltration, we simply apply a small amount of composite resin to the decayed area of a tooth to stop it from spreading, and thats it! This approach is proven effective, completely painless, and doesnt require the removal of any dental structure.
Even though your childs primary (baby) teeth will all eventually fall out, dont underestimate their importance. They help kids learn to speak clearly, chew nutritious food, and they are space savers for their adult teeth. Therefore, if your child has a severely decayed baby tooth, a crown may be the best solution. After removing the decayed portion of tooth, Dr. Schwedcements a prefabricated crown over the tooth to provide full coverage and protection. We offer both tooth-colored, as well as stainless steel crowns.
In some cases, the best treatment for a severely decayed tooth or one that is causing pain is to simply remove it. If Dr. Schwed needs to extract a tooth, you can rest assured that he and his staff will be gentle and caring, taking the necessary steps to ensure a pleasant experience.
Once the tooth is removed, it is important to fill the space where the tooth once stood. If a child loses a tooth that wont soon be replaced by a permanent tooth, Dr. Schwed will insert a space maintainer to hold the space until the permanent tooth erupts. Doing this ensures the adjacent teeth stay put and dont shift into the empty space.
Tongue and lip ties refer to an unusually short or thick band of connective tissue that tethers the tongue to the floor of the mouth, or the lip to the gums covering the jaw. This may result in an infants inability to nurse, speech delays, pain or discomfort, sleep apnea, and/or unwanted tooth movement, like a gap between the two front teeth.
Not long ago, the release of a tongue or lip tie required a visit to a hospital, general anesthesia, and an uncomfortable recovery. No longer! Dr. Schwed, utilizing the Solea laser, is able to release the tissue painlessly, without injections, and often without the need for even a mild sedative.
A thorough examination of the oral structures involves the soft tissues as well as the teeth. In the event that Dr. Schwed discovers an unusual finding that does not belong, he may choose to remove all or a portion of it. Using the Solea dental laser, Dr. Schwed will make a small, painless incisionknown as a soft tissue biopsyand send the sample to a pathologist for analysis, in order to rule out cancer or other oral disease.

Dr. Schwed is amazing! Our daughter is 3 months old and needed to see a dentist/ortho bc she had a lip tie and tongue tie. After meeting with Dr. Schwed, we learned the severity of each tie and that she also had buckle ties. He explained the history of the procedures as well has his experience into this field. Very fascinating! He was thorough, listened to our thoughts/concerns, did not pressure us into any decisions, and over all had a kind and patient manner! During and after her procedure, Dr. Schwed and his team were efficient in their work while making my baby as comfortable as possible. They explained everything in detail so that I was able to understand. They were amazing and now my baby is eating/drinking VERY well and she is a happy baby! Thank you Dr.Schwed and team!

Dr. Schwed and Staff welcomed me and my 3 children with open arms. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful with dental procedures and insurance guidance. Dr Schwed is very professional , gentle and kind . All 4 girls felt extremely comfortable and enjoyed their experience . The clean , bright and welcoming waiting room with fun movies was a great experience . He patiently took the time to see each girl , answered any questions we had . We really enjoyed our first visit with Dr.Schwed! He came out into the waiting area and greeted me by name to let me know they would be right with us. I've actually never been to an office where the doctor came out and greeted me by name. He was genuine, extremely caring, thorough, and a super nice guy! You can tell he's an all around great person and dentist! He explained treatment needed in a way that my kids understood. His staff was also very friendly and fun! My kids loved the token they received to get a prize, too! I highly recommend Dr.Schwed and his staff! Happy to have found a new dental home for my boys! THANK YOU!!!

I had such an awesome experience here and so did my kids. The place is so nice and clean and all the staff are soo nice. Dr Schwed even did the elmo voice for my daughter (which was spot on by the way) he also took the time to sit and explain things to me patiently and I've never experienced that before. People please pay attention to these reviews when deciding on a dentist for your littles. I couldn't rave more about this place and the entire staff. Dr. Schwed is phenomenal with kids. His staff is phenomenal with kids. His mom, who works the front again phenomenal. She went the extra mile to make sure my nerves were calm. Just a wonderful experience all around. Dr. Schwed and his staff were completely and utterly amazing! Starting from the initial phone call to set up the appointment-she was so helpful and nice and sincere! To the actual visit (first time fillings for my daughter) was such a wonderful experience. He walked me through every step and has such an incredible gift with children. Everyone was so genuine like they really care about you. He and his staff stayed late to continue work on her teeth and said "we're here for YOU"! I mean who says that?! I've never been around such professionalism in a long time and I would 100x recommend him and this office!! Thank you!!!

Very knowledgeable staff and inviting atmosphere that do a great job. The doctor actually takes the time to review your baby specific situation before doing a tongue or lip tie. I can see the extra care and attention that go into the people that come through his door.
