Dr. Schaefer truly enjoys the art and science of dentistry. He is passionate about creating smiles that improve health and function and look both beautiful and natural. His goal is to enhance each patients comfort and confidence when they smile. Dr. Schaefer works with extremely talented laboratory technicians that create lifelike, artistic restorations to complement his work. It is imperative for success to have direct lines of communication between the dentist, technicians, and patient. He makes a special effort to listen to each patients questions and goals for their smile. He takes pride in delivering both excellent service and results.
Dr. David Schaefer was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky where he currently resides with his wife, Suzanne, and their three children. He graduated from the St. Xavier High School in 1984, completed undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville, and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1991. Following graduation, Dr. Schaefer was invited to participate in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at the University of Louisville. This year-long program focused extensively on complex, advanced dentistry related to proper evaluation, sequencing, and delivery of care. During this same year, he began part-time private practice with his father, Dr. John Schaefer, Sr. Then, in 1992, Dr. Schaefer entered full-time private practice by concentrating on complete health and aesthetics.
2010 Dr. Schaefer received his accredited status from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. This challenging accreditation process included: a written exam, required continuing education courses, written and photographic documentation of five specific clinical case types judged by five examiners and completion of an oral exam related to treatment planning and discussion of the five clinical cases.
We are very proud of this achievement as it is an accomplishment that required contributions by many people. Our office team was integral in providing excellent care and communication of the many aspects of complex dentistry from initial phone contact to periodontal therapy to fabrication of provisionals. Various specialists provided excellence in endodontics, crown lengthening, implant placement, extractions, tissue grafting, and orthodontics. Success in this endeavor is not possible without extremely talented ceramists to create lifelike, natural, and functional restorations. And finally, this level of care required a commitment of time and resources by our patients which resulted in a win/win for all involved. Dr. David Schaefer
As Office Manager, Connie has been the heart of Drs. John and Davids practice for over 27 years. She strives to make sure every patient is warmly welcomed and treated like family. She truly enjoys all the patients she has met over the years. If you have questions about your insurance or any aspect of your visit, Connie is your point woman. She lives in Louisville and is the proud mother of a son and a daughter. She enjoys doing activities with her daughter, Brittany and traveling to North Carolina to visit her son, Cody and daughter-in-law, Carolyn. She enjoys hiking, biking and trip to the beach.
Suzanne has been with the practice for 25 years. She is happily married to Dr. David and is our marketing/design specialist. She is a huge help with office promotion in the community and is involved in marketing the Schaefer Advanced Dentistry brand. She enjoys the outdoors, exercise and fitness and walking with her husband and dog.
Dawn has been with Drs. John and David for a total of 27 years. She is our lead expanded duties dental assistant. Patient care is her top priority. She says, I love my job and I love caring for, helping and educating our patients, and treating them like family. She lives in Sheperdsville with her husband of 28 years, Donny. They have 2 grown children. Her daughter is an event planner and her son is a sailor in the Navy. They could not be prouder! She enjoys the outdoor life, spending quality time with her family and friends at their cabin at the lake-where they swim, boat and take long walks with their dogs, Dooney and Dixie.
Shennell is our newest member of our work family, with 18 years of experience practicing in Hawaii, Colorado and Kentucky. She continues to provide quality care to our patients. I love helping people to be confident with their smile., she says. Shennell lives in Mount Washington with her husband of 11 years and their 3 handsome boys, Piko, Poiu and Noa. In her free time she loves spending time with her family, working out and being outside! Not to mention trips to her home Hawaii!!
Missi started as a dental assistant nearly 20 years ago. She has worked as a hygienist with Schaefer Advanced Dentistry for 17 years. Her favorite part of hygiene is building relationships with our patients and helping them achieve and maintain excellent oral health. She is leading the team in the newest laser treatment techniques. She lives in Louisville with her husband, Josh and their 2 children , Laiken and Lane. In her free time, she enjoys her childrens sporting events, spending time with friends, working out and eating good food.
Julie is our dental hygienist and has been with Dr. Schaefer for 16 years. She lives in Louisville with her husband, Mark, and has two grown daughters. Julie was a sales representative for Block Drug Pharmaceuticals for 6 years but missed the personal interaction with patients and returned to clinical practice in 2000. When asked what her favorite part of being a hygienist is she states, I love every aspect of hygiene. I especially love educating my patients about oral health and knowing that I am helping people and providing a service that is important to their overall health. In her spare time, Julie enjoys spending time with family, friends and making jewelery.

I have been going to Dr. Schaefer for several years. The dental work that I have received there has been incredible and the results have been above and beyond my expectations. They have always been extremely courteous. Going to the dentist can be an extremely nerve racking experience but with this team, it's always been a calm and even relaxing experience.

Dr. Schaefer is a magician! He did amazing work on our son's teeth and he is smiling from ear to ear. His confidence is up and his teeth look beyond perfect! Our son really liked Dr. Schaefer and his amazing staff. I know that Dr. Schaefer's fun sense of humor made the experience a lot easier for our son. Would definitely recommend!

The first dental appointment I've ever experienced that was comfortable, painless and rewarding. Dr. Schaefer achieved my goal smile I wouldn't recommend anyone else in louisville for your cosmetic dental needs. He listened to what I wanted and exceeded my expectations with the transformation. A true professional and has the nicest staff that is doing everything to ensure it is a safe, clean environment and a great experience! 10/10

Dr.Schaefer and his team Always take their time to discuss, review and make absolutely certain each procedure is perfectly accurate. From details of costs and 'how' a treatment will go, to final touches of goody bags that allow you to go home and relax with the comfort of soups and teas. I have to say, they go the extra step to make you feel comfortable. The team is happy and, they care! You can see it in their Smiles! I have had many dentists in my lifetime, in many different cities , and none have ever called me after a critical procedure. Dr Schaefer does!

I had a wonderful experience with Doctor Schaefer and his team. My latest visit was for my six-month cleaning and check-up. Missi, the hygienist, was professional, careful, attentive, and thoughtful. She worked exceptionally hard to assess my needs and address them. She uses the latest techniques to improve your dental health. For example, after discussing the benefits with Missi, I opted for an advanced fluoride treatment this visit. It's readily apparent she enjoys her profession and her patients. My appointment concluded with a visit from Doctor Schaefer to review the condition of my teeth and oral health. He was also professional, knowledgeable, and interested in providing me the best service possible. He is very easy to speak with and willing to provide both the pros and cons to your needs and the related decisions. He is one of the best doctors I have worked with over the years. A friend to all. The rest of the team was also very attentive, professional, and supportive. They know their business and how to make the experience efficient and safe. I was extremely impressed with the protocols they follow for COVID protection. If you enjoy excellent service, please give them a call. They can address the most difficult situations, and will extend the life of your teeth, smile, confidence, and health.

My procedure was having a filling removed to prep for a new crown. After I was numb I laid back and listened to some music while Dr. Schaefer and his technician did their thing. They were efficient and everything went smoothly. Everyone there at the office were extremely pleasant.

I am new to Louisville and was recommended to this dentist by an old friend. Great office! Welcoming staff, lovely waiting room and a relaxed feel about the place. Dr. Schaefer was kind, professional, thorough and took time to explain what he was doing while he examined my teeth and why he was doing it. He also asked me general questions about my health - again, very thorough! Missy, his hygienist, was funny, easy to talk to, and gave me some great tips on improving my gum health. I am giving 4 stars only because I haven't had a cavity removed yet or had any major work done - but I'm pretty confident that when and if I need it, it will be the best!
