Dr. Sarah Herd comes from a family of dentists. Her father Dr. Richard M. Herd, Jr. practices general dentistry on the east side of Indianapolis and her grandfather, Dr. Richard M. Herd, Sr. was an oral surgeon. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School and then Valparaiso University before attending Indiana University School of Dentistry for both her dental degree and masters degree in periodontics.
Dr. Herd is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, meaning that she has achieved the highest possible level of education in her field. Becoming Board Certified in Periodontology means that Dr. Herd not only completed dental school plus her three year residency in periodontics, but she has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty. This includes taking comprehensive oral and written examinations in order to demonstrate expertise covering all phases and treatments of periodontal diseases and dental implants. She attends continuing education courses throughout the year. Additionally, she teaches dental and hygiene students at Indiana University School of Dentistry and participates in student run outreach clinics.
In her free time, Dr. Herd likes to pretend she is training for a triathlon and run, swim, or bike. In good weather, you can find her on her bicycle on one of the trails in Indianapolis. In bad weather, or lazy days, she enjoys hanging out with her three dogs and reading good books. She is always looking for recommendations! Dr. Herd also enjoys live music and can be found wherever anyone good is playing!

I had a terrible experience today with Dr. Herd's hygienist, Liz. I came in for my appointment and she started using an ultrasound machine on me which was uncomfortable. I asked her to stop which she did and asked her to remove the tartar manually. She refused x 3. I then got up out of the chair and left the office. She never asked why I wanted the cleaning to be done manually and furthermore did not call in Dr. Herd to talk to me. Dr. Herd has had a turnover in her office with dental hygienist; she has had good hygienist work in her office but her current hygienist, Liz is certainly not the best and is uncaring. She said "we don't have time to clean your teeth manually".

Cannot say enough good things about Dr Herd's office and her staff! I was referred to her by my dentist for a gum issue/operation and have was treated so well I really don't want to go to any other perio or dentist! I'd you go somewhere else, you're going to the wrong place.

Dr. Sarah Herd is an amazing periodontist. She cares so much for her patients and goes above and beyond to make sure they are taken care of. Dr. Herd is really rare because these days it's hard to find a medical professional that takes time to listen. She went out of her way to help our son find a doctor for his shoulder because she is so kind. We recommend her and her staff 100%.

Dr. Herd was very helpful, professional and knowledgeable. She relieved my discomfort giving me options & improved my quality of life again. I was nervous because of my chronic health problems but Dr. Herd helped me. Thank you from a senior patient!
