San Marcos Family Dentistry Dr. Gene Milligan is a San Marcos based family dentist practice that treats patients of all ages. We are committed to delivering the highest quality dental care and do so using advanced dental equipment. Philosophy of CareGene Milligan DDS and the staff at San Marcos Family Dentistry Dr. Gene Milligan believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. Gene Milligan DDS understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at San Marcos Family Dentistry Dr. Gene Milligan work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the 78666 area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams Gene Milligan DDS and the staff at San Marcos Family Dentistry Dr. Gene Milligan can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

Q: Are baby teeth really that important to my child?A: Primary, or baby, teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

Q: What should I do if my child has a toothache?A: First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

Q: How do dental sealants work?A: Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

Q: How do I know if my child is getting enough fluoride?A: Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your childs primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

Q: What can I do to protect my teeth during sporting events?A: Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

Q: How safe are dental X-rays?A: There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

By combining quality patient care with up-to-date technology, we are able to treat patients of all ages in a comfortable and relaxing setting. Our dentist and highly trained staff are trained to not only treat patients but to identify what caused the health concern in the first place. I went online looking for sedation dentistry and I found that they offer it here. I filled out an online request, filling out all my info. I gave it about a week and went ahead and called them. The lady said "oh we don't take online appointments". I told her it was on their website. Then She asked me what my appointment was for and I told her that I was interested in the sedation dentistry. She said "oh we don't do that here" after all of my research looking for a dentist who takes my insurance, who offers a certain type of care and their website says they do....what a waste of my time. Now I have to start over.

The staff was great but the dentist was very dismissive of my questions.

Very disappointed with this dentist and staff. My daughter had an appointment for a procedure today in which she was given a written quote for cost over a week ago. Less than 12 hours before procedure she was called and told it was a mistake and to still come in. The day of procedure they tried to tell her it would be double the cost and NO other options for procedure. Going from $1416 to $3200 after a written quote was obtained, that states valid for 3 months, is not acceptable by any ethical provider.

I have been seeing Dr. Milligan for around 25-30 years, and I have always been extremely happy with him and his staff. Serious health problems now prevent me from driving, so I can't continue coming from Austin for my dental care. Many thanks for everything you and your fine staff have done for me, Gene.

I'm so happy I found this place! Dr. Milligan and his staff were so friendly. As a student at Texas State I was extremely worried about finding a local dentist that could see me right away, as I was experiencing pain from one of my wisdom teeth. Dr. Milligan was able to see me and extract the tooth all within the same day. This was by far the best dentist experience I have ever had!

Dr. Milligan and his staff are very professional and friendly. Dr. Milligan explains everything he is about to do and puts you at ease. I love that he takes the time to call you at home to check on you if the procedure entailed more work than just a regular checkup. You won't find all the glitz you may see at other big dental corporations, but I would rather have a dentist who owns his own business, cares for his patients, and is very personable. I like the hometown touch!

My family and I have been Dr. Milligan's patients for many years, and we are happy with the care we have received. I have in fact recommended Dr. Milligan to some friends.

Terrific dentist and office staff. Completely honest. Previous dentist (Castle) said I needed thousands of dollars of dental work. Dr. Milligan said my teeth are great. My five year old just got his first cleaning there (don't judge-I had to make sure he was old enough not to be terrified) and he said, "I love the dentist! I want to go back every week!" LOL. That's an endorsement.

My husband started going to Dr. Milligan seven years ago. I was going to a different clinic at the time, but fell in love with the clinic when I took him for the first time. The doctor and staff members are fantastic. We live in Buda, but would rather drive a little farther just to stay with this clinic.

I visited earlier this week for a routine exam and Dr. Milligan suspected that I needed a root canal due to a lump inside of my mouth and based upon an x-ray. Dr. Milligan's staff expedited my appointment to today due to a vacation that I have planned. Today, Dr. Milligan removed the lump first and then discovered that I did not need a root canal and that the tooth is still healthy. There is obviously a bad reputation for some dentists performing unnecessary procedures/being dishonest, but Dr. Milligan is clearly neither. Each time I have visited his office the staff is friendly, helpful, and timely. The fact that his office scheduled a quick appointment for me within the same week was a great indicator of customer service. My experiences have been overwhelmingly positive over the last year and I would recommend family and friends to his office!
