Preventive dentistry can prevent minor tooth and gum issues from becoming worrisome oral health conditions. And because its well-known that poor oral health plays a significant role in heart disease, diabetes, and other serious medical concerns, preventive dentistry can also keep you healthier overall.
A comprehensive dental examination is the foundation of preventive dentistry. Dr. Pak performs your dental exam, which varies depending on your individual needs. For instance, Dr. Pak may spend more time looking for signs of gum disease in adults and focus more on tooth decay in children.
The examination includes a very thorough review of your full medical history. This provides Dr. Pak with valuable information about illnesses you have, medications you take regularly, as well as your use of alcohol or tobacco. Its important that you share these details with Dr. Pak, since health factors often influence dental treatments.
Dr. Pak conducts a visual exam that includes a check of dental problems youre aware of, as well as an assessment of your risk for future dental issues. For instance, he may notice new wearing of your teeth due to grinding your teeth at night (bruxism). Dr. Pak also recommends dental X-rays to identify hidden cavities or other conditions that arent always visible on a visual examination.
Dr. Paks exam also includes screening for oral cancer. He looks for abnormalities in the tissues of your mouth and tongue, including sores or lumps, and may examine the areas surrounding your jaw to check for symptoms of oral cancer.
Once your dental examination is complete, Dr. Pak discusses your diagnosis and explores treatment options if necessary, such as a night guard to prevent further damage caused by bruxism. He may recommend sealants to protect your teeth or cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening.
A dental sealant is a plastic coating thats painted onto the chewing surfaces of your teeth. The sealant bonds into the grooves of your teeth and forms a protective shield for each tooth that is sealed. The sealer lasts for approximately five years. Dr. Pak generally recommends sealants as a preventative measure for the biting surfaces of back teeth, or molars
His training and experience equip him with the skills necessary to treat routine and complex oral health issues, and he also focuses on preventing dental problems at every stage of life. Dr. Pak welcomes patients of all ages to the offices of Sammy BD Pak, DDS.
Dr. Pak completed his undergraduate studies at the well-respected La Sierra University in Riverside, California. He earned his DDS degree from Loma Linda University Dental School in 1999. Dr. Pak is an active member of the American Dental Association, Washington State Dental Association, Pierce County Dental Association, American Dental Association Council of Dental Benefit, American Dental Association CDT Staff Committee, Harvard University Advisory Committee and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
He received the coveted Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Legislative Leadership from the American Dental Association in 2008. Hes also had the honor and privilege of serving as President of the Pierce County Dental Society.
Dr. Pak keeps pace with the latest developments in dental products and procedures through continuing education via postgraduate courses and professional conferences. His goal is to provide his patients with the best dental care available in a family-oriented and welcoming environment.
He grew up on the Hawaiian island of Oahu and has fond memories of childhood adventures with his brother and sister, such as learning how to climb coconut trees. These days, Dr. Pak enjoys fishing with his friends and chasing a tiny white ball around the golf course while daydreaming about hitting a perfect hole in one.

This was my first visit to Dr Pak, since my previous dentist retired, he was referred to me by a friend. I was very please with his staff, who were very friendly and informative. Dr Pak was very thorough and professional.

Been coming here for about 20 years :) love the whole staff. They're part of my life, like family. Check-up every six months, and finally started myself on Invisalign! They're really helpful through the whole process and are diligent about me coming back to make sure everything's going as planned.

I was a little sad at my first appointment as I had some work to get done before I can start the Invisalign, but Sammy Pak's office got me in quickly and I got those things taken care of and just started my first trays! :) The entire staff is absolutely wonderful and enjoyable to work with!
