Dentistry is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions, disorders, and diseases of the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw. Often considered necessary for complete oral health, dentistry can have an impact on the health of your entire body.

A dentist is a specialist who works to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral health problems. Your dentist has completed at least eight years of schooling, and received either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree, or a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. If your doctor is a pediatric dentist, this means that they specialize in caring for children from infancy through their teen years. Your dentist has received the proper education and training needed to work with young kids. Other specializations include:

Your teeth may feel fine, but its still important to see the dentist regularly because problems can exist without you knowing. Your smiles appearance is important, and your dentist can help keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful. With so many advances in dentistry, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth. Todays dentists offer many treatment choices that can help you smile with confidence, including:

  • Avoid foods with a lot of sugar (sugar increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth causing more plaque and possibly cavities) and avoid tobacco (this can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and eventually lead to oral cancer).
  • The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children first see a dentist as early as six-months-old and no later than one-year-old. During this time, your childs baby teeth will be coming in and your dentist can examine the health of your childs first few teeth. After the first visit, be sure to schedule regular checkups every six months.

Children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. You doctor will help determine how often you should visit the dentist for regular checkups.

A cavity is a small hole that forms inside the tooth because of tooth decay. Cavities are formed when plaque buildup on the outside of the tooth combines with sugars and starches in the food you eat. This produces an acid that can eat away the enamel on your tooth. If a cavity is left untreated, it can lead to more serious oral health problems. Cavities can be prevented by remembering to brush your teeth at least two times a day and floss between teeth at least once.

A filling is a synthetic material that your dentist uses to fill a cavity after all of the tooth decay has been removed. Fillings do not generally hurt because your dentist will numb your mouth with an anesthetic. Fillings are made from a variety of different materials, including composites, gold, or ceramic. If you need a filling, be sure to talk to your doctor about what type is best for you and your teeth.

According to your dentist and the American Dental Association, you should brush your teeth at least two times a day. Brushing keeps your teeth, gums, and mouth clean and healthy by removing bacteria-causing plaque. It is also recommended that you use a soft bristle toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride when you brush your teeth. You should spend at least a minute on the top teeth and a minute on the bottom teeth, and remember to brush your tongue it will help keep your breath smelling fresh!

Your toothbrush will eventually wear out, especially if you are brushing your teeth twice a day for two to three minutes each time. Your dentist recommends that adults and children change their toothbrush every three months. If you are using an electric toothbrush, be sure to read the directions because you may not need to change toothbrush heads as frequently. Patients with gum disease are encouraged to change their toothbrush every four to six weeks to keep any bacteria from spreading. After brushing, rinse your toothbrush with hot water to kill germs and keep the bristles clean. If youve been sick, be sure to change your toothbrush as soon as possible.

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is mostly caused by plaque and bacteria buildup that is not treated in its early stage. Other causes of periodontal disease include tobacco use, teeth grinding, some medications, and genetics. Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease, and, if detected, is treatable. Gingivitis left untreated may turn into gum disease. Advanced gum disease will lead to tooth and bone loss, and is a permanent condition. Brushing your teeth regularly and visiting the dentist every six months will help prevent gingivitis and more severe cases of periodontal disease. Common signs of gum disease:

Yes! In fact, its even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush cant reach. This causes bacteria to build up and can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Simply call our practice! The Sage Dental and Orthodontics front desk staff will be happy to help schedule your next dental checkup at your convenience. If you are a new patient, please let us know and we will provide you with all the information you need for your first dental visit.

Lynn answered the phone when I called, she is the worst person I have ever come across on a phone call. She became so loud when I asked her to stop and listen for a second because every time I started talking she would interrupt so loudly. I actually had to hang up the phone cause she would not stop going on. I'm confused now cause I liked the dentist I saw and scheduled to follow up. If I have to talk to this animal again on the phone then I will have to find a new dentist.

SAGE DENTAL PEARLAND 6302 BROADWAY, rates ZERO stars! I only rated 1 star because it won't let me rate a ZERO, for ZERO customer service. The guy at the front desk had the worst customer service in all my years of life. This is a dental office, I am there for an emergency in serious pain. The office staff at the front desk have no compassion. I explained to them that cold water numbs my pain while I wait, and asked for a cup of cold water from their water cooler while I wait. Suffering in silence in the lobby, I waited in excruciating pain from a root canal. The office staff never offered to help nor provided my request for cold water; there was no sense of urgency. I had to insist on the cold water. My pain was so bad, I had piercing earache, massive headache, chills, and lack of vision. The guy at the front desk seemed agitated to provide a cup of water. They never fixed my tooth because I was told the doctor only comes twice a month and it was not my lucky day. Remember I was there as an emergency case because of my pain. Crying in pain in disbelief I wasted my time and Uber money, the assistant asked if she could schedule me with a different office in Pasadena!! TOO FAR!! I walked to the lobby to call my Uber, and that front desk guy approached and told me sorry our specialist doesn't take your insurance! I filled out paperwork and provided my insurance prior to my appointment. Wincing in pain, unable to put two words together to express my disappointment, I simply asked for another cup of cold water to numb my pain while I wait for my Uber. This is the main reason for a ZERO RATING., the front desk guy said, and I quote: "There is a water fountain in the lobby, you've had your 2 cup limit." Note: this is a water cooler with an endless supply of cold water, all he had to do is press a button and fill a cup to end my suffering. I was appalled by his insensitivity to my pain, unprecedented lack of customer service, hateful attitude, lazy work ethic, and incredulous effort to not help those in need. NEED I REMIND YOU, YOU WORK IN A DENTAL OFFICE! YOU REALLY NEED TO SEEK OTHER EMPLOYMENT, AND NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am sorry but YOU give customer service and the medical service people a bad name! Showing up to work for yourself is NOT enough. Your paycheck should go to someone more deserving. I pray anyone else with dental problems seek another dentist office. There are better treatments available.

Awful experience. Woman at front desk on right side was rude and apparently angry at the world about something. They don't keep their phone calls with patients discreet as we all could here one side of the conversations. Had two employees working on my daughter at one time to hurry things along which upset her but moreover the tech who flossed her teeth was very aggressive and it was painful. My daughter is the only person I know who flosses every day but was told her gums were bleeding because she wasn't flossing properly and doing it all wrong. Then the final aggression was demanding we go to the oral surgeon to have 4 wisdom teeth pulled immediately and they had already contacted their office for an appointment without our consent. Never going back.

Great dental practice even for children. Doctor Shayan Alkhiro was fantastic with my 7 year old and explained to him what she was doing and why. She took the time to make it as easy for him as possible so that he wouldn`t fear coming back to the dentist in the future. My wife and other children all are now switch to Doctor Alkhiro moving forward! Thank you for all your help!

My first dental visit took 2.5 hrs. Unacceptable for a simple exam. I didn't even get my teeth cleaned. If you are short staffed or over booked, just tell your customer so they can make proper plans around a their visit.

Awful place! I took my 79 year old mom for a cleaning. They did her xrays. Not gentle or patient at all. Then they looked at her teeth. Again not gentle getting her in the chair and leaned back. Said she needed a new filling and a deep cleaning. Of course that's a way to get more money. I asked if they could just give her a regular cleaning which is why we went there. They flatly refused. We wasted 2 hours and got nothing. What a big fat waste of time. Lots of kids running around too. This place just wants your money and will recommend unnecessary things to get you to come back and spend more money. Zero stars.
