Dr. Thomas Gilbert feels very lucky to be able to practice in the city where he grew up as a child. A strong sense of community was instilled in him as he grew up in Royal Oak, where he played every sport under the sun with his neighborhood friends and enjoyed movies at the old Royal Oak drive-in.

Dr. Gilberts passion for dentistry and excellence in treatment started early on. Both of his parents were teachers and administrators at Detroit Country Day School, where he excelled in academics, soccer and lacrosse. He majored in biology and psychology at Albion College, where he also continued to play varsity soccer and lacrosse. He received his Doctorate of Dentistry from the University of Detroit Dental School in 1985.

His love of learning continues both in his professional and personal life. An avid reader who loves mysteries and suspense, Dr. Gilbert averages two to three books at a time for pleasure, as well as dental journals and current research papers to provide the most innovative and comfortable treatment for his patients. Dr. Gilbert is a firm believer in continuing education. One such class that he has taken is Invisible Braces by Invisalign, where his patients have ranged from early teens to 80-year-olds. He has also learned how to place and restore implants, which has opened up a whole new option of treatment for his patients. Dr. Gilbert was also one of the first to complete the specialized course in Lumineers.

Family is one of Dr. Gilberts top priorities. He and his staff at Royal Oak Dental treat their patients as if they were family. Dr. Gilbert met his wife in 10th grade and married her 10 years later. Together they have four children, a dog and two cats. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, fitness at the gym, target practice, movies, musical theater, and the Red Wings (ask to see his autograph collection!). His motto in life is, 'Mens Sana in Corpis Sana' which translates to 'A sound mind in a sound body.'

Dr. Gilberts focus is to provide the most professional level of treatment and comfort to his patients. As Dr. Gilbert will tell you himself, he has had a lot of treatment done on his own teeth and he knows what his patients go through. People have asked, But you are a dentist! How can you have so much done to you?' He tells them, 'When I was growing up, I wanted to be a cowboy.'

Hate to leave poor reviews but I feel this is necessary. Was trying out a new dental office and i had a teeth cleaning with Denise that went great! No complaints about that. Where I have complaints is from the filling I received. This is my third filling that I have had so I am completely aware of the process for fillings and what you feel during them. I believe I was over injected with numbing medication. Prior to this filling I have never felt any sort of pain while getting a filling other than maybe a small pinch when they inject the shot. I notified the hygienist that my face felt like it was burning and tears were welling in my eyes. My left side of my face was completely pale for the remainder of the day. I was told I would feel numb for about 2 hours but the numbness lasted around 7-8 hours. I was also told i may not be able to blink out of my left eye for a few hours due to the numbness. Not only did I experience a lot of soreness and swelling for days but also bruising in my jaw. My jaw is still bruised over a week later see picture below! Mind you this filling took probably less than a minute so I'm not sure if they hit a nerve or what happened but I don't know anyone who has experienced bruising from a small filling. Unfortunately will not be going back and figured people should be informed so they know what they are getting themselves into.

I am always able to get a late appointment. That's a plus for me due to my work schedule. There is usually no wait once I arrive. The Receptionist always try to accommodate my work schedule. The Dental Hygienists are professional and gentle. The Dentist himself has great bedside rapport. He's gentle and friendly as well. The entire staff is great. The office is always clean. I've been a patient here for about 7 years.

Great experience as usual at Royal Oak Dental. Hygienist Denise obviously cares about your teeth, makes pertinent comments and was very thorough, as was Dr. Gilbert.

Unbelievable! I had an appointment that was cancelled BY the dental technician I was supposed to see so she could attend an event with her daughter. Multiple attempts to reschedule this appointment have been completely ignored by Royal Oak Dental staff. I am left with a mouthful of half-finished dental work. This is not high school. This is supposed to be an office of dental professionals. Instead you get a bunch of immature, unethical administrative assistants who's concept of resolution and responsibility seems to be "ghosting" it's clients. I have contacted Medicare, and my insurance company, and Licensensing and Regulatory Affairs but save yourself the trouble and go to a dental office staffed with more honest, more mature indiviuals.
