This meant once again uprooting and going to still another location. Plus, he had the responsibility to provide for the new addition to his life, his beautiful newborn daughter, Meredith. Yet, this was what he wanted and as is his way, he was determined.

The interview had gone well until the last question asked: Why do you want to be an orthodontist? Talk about pressure. THIS was where he wanted to be. He had overcome a slew of why you should not go to ortho school just to apply. And now this one answer could be the hinge that opened the door to entrance or slam it shut.

His dad, Valley, meet his mom, Jane at a dance not long after Valley returned from military duty as part of the occupying force in Japan at the end of World War II. They married after an 18-month long courtship and started their family.

His dad would sometimes work two jobs just to make sure the family was provided for. Dr Roy was just Carl back then and he did not always see eye to eye with his dad. We had our spats to say the least, but I see now how much he and Mom loved us, always taking care of us and showing tough love when warranted. I feel so grateful for my Dad. He was one of my heroes.

He was something of a mischievous kid and all-boy growing up. This was before the Internet and cell phones so playing outside in all seasons was just what kids did. He had a particular love for football. He played for Ferguson High School in Newport News. He even thought he might play in college.

Instead he went to college at Virginia Tech, briefly entertaining the idea of architecture, but quickly changing his major to biology and pre-dentistry. He had visited and shadowed both medical and dental doctors. The dentist was a family friend that encouraged Carl, telling him it was a great choice. The medical doctors werent so happy with practice, so Carl chose dentistry. But first he had to get into dental school and that meant doing well in school at Tech.

The courses for biology and pre-dent are very challenging, especially if you want to go to dental school. The killers of careers are organic chemistry and physics. Many a student has changed majors and their entire futures because they couldnt get through these courses.

Carl Roy made the firm decision that if he was to do well, he had study and study hard on a disciplined schedule. He held himself to the standard he had set. This is a quality that lives in him today.

His organic chemistry professor, Dr Oligarusso, took a liking to Carl and encouraged him to take his Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) early and apply to dental school early during his junior year. Carl wasnt so sure, but he allowed the experienced professor to give him guidance. He scored very well on his DAT and got his interview at MCV School of Dentistry, the only place he applied.

He did well and was ready to graduate and take his state board exams. Now these exams are nerve racking because a major part of the three-day exam is done on patients, who may or may not help the doctor. Most cooperate, but you never know.

I learned a lot there, but I wanted to practice orthodontics to improve function as well as esthetics the way I was taught in my restorative dental education. That was why I went into orthodontics in the first place.

He talked to all the best orthodontists he knew from all over the country. They all pointed him to the same place: the Roth/Williams Center for Functional Occlusion post graduate program in Burlingame, California, about 20 miles south of San Francisco.

In 2007, he started teaching the Full FACE (Functional and Cosmetic Excellence) course with a group of orthodontists trained by Drs. Roth and Williams. FACE has taken the Roth/Williams principles and added to them, accelerating and improving results all over the world.

He has lectured at universities around the country and internationally. These include Harvard, Boston University, Arizona School of Dentistry, NOVA Southeastern University, UCLA, Loma Linda, USC, Louisville, University or Colorado, multiple programs in New York and North Carolina.

He has lectured in China, South America and Europe on the importance of jaw joint stability as well as how doctors in different specialties can work as team to ensure the best treatment outcomes and objective measurable goals for predictable treatment.

He has been invited to join the faculties of Boston University and Harvard. These invitations are a tribute to his understanding of orthodontics, the proper function of the jaws and enhancing the oral health of patients.

He serves on the Examining Committee for the Edward H. Angle Society, a prestigious, educational, invitation only orthodontic study group composed of the luminaries in the profession of teaching and guiding orthodontics around the world.

He has 2 wonderful children, Meredith and Taylor. Meredith and Taylor were completely different growing up. Meredith loved writing poetry and short stories even in elementary school. Taylor loved mechanical things and wanted to grow up to be an aerospace engineer. Their interests were consistent as they grew up and Meredith still loves to read and write and proofs research papers for college students. Taylor is studying to be an engineer.

I am very proud of who they have grown to be says Carl. They are both very kind, with a loving heart and a good head on their shoulders. I pray they both have a future that they love as much as I have loved practicing orthodontics.

Today, Dr Carl Roy is an honored clinician and teacher to so many and has earned the respect and admiration from the best in the field that selected him to prestigious honorary orthodontic organizations as a member and a leader.

Dr. Carl Roy is still on the mission that brought him to orthodontics in the first place to help his patients enjoy beautiful smiles and faces, healthy jaw joints, open airway and bites that help teeth last a lifetime.

Dr. Carl Roy obtained his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia in 1979. After practicing general dentistry for six years, he made the decision to pursue orthodontics as a specialty. In 1987, Dr. Roy completed his orthodontic residency at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry, where he received a Masters of Science Degree with honors.

Upon receiving his license for orthodontics, Dr. Roy began practicing alongside four other specialists in Tidewater, where he was born and raised. However, he soon realized he wanted to further his education once more, so he could provide optimal health and function for his patients in addition to simply straight teeth. That is when he decided to attend the two-year program offered by the Roth/Williams Center for Functional Occlusion. Years later in 2007, Dr. Roy would go on to adopt the principles he learned there; and along with a group of several other orthodontists, he developed the Full FACE (Functional and Cosmetic Excellence) Course in an effort to improve the field of orthodontics all over the world. Today, Dr. Roy has spent nearly 20 years teaching postgraduate orthodontics.

For Dr. Roy, orthodontics is truly a passion. In addition to beautiful smiles, he gives his patients healthy jaw joints, functioning bites, and open airways. These are the elements that can improve your oral health for years to come.

Choosing an orthodontist or any dental professional can be an overwhelming task. After all, there are multiple options to choose from. How do you know you are selecting a doctor who provides the highest level of care? A board-certified orthodontist has exhibited extensive knowledge and skill beyond his or her advanced education requirements.Dr. Carl Royhas obtained his board certification through the American Board of Orthodontists (ABO). This achievement signifies his absolute dedication to patient care. In the United States, only one-third of orthodontists have gone on to complete board certification. When you choose Roy Orthodontics, rest assured you will be receiving the highest level of expertise possible.

When it comes to worldwide professional dental organizations, the American Dental Association (ADA) is one of the most renowned. There is only one orthodontic certifying board that is recognized by the ADA, and that is the American Board of Orthodontics. Therefore, if you see that your doctor has been certified through the ABO, you know that he or she has achieved the highest level of achievement in the field.

Many people wonder why a dental specialist who has already completed 10 or 11 years of higher education would choose to pursue orthodontic board certification. Those who seek this high achievement simply wish to demonstrate their commitment to their colleagues and their community. It is a representation of their pledge and obligation to provide the highest level of orthodontic care.

Those who pursue board certification through the ABO must undergo a rigorous process. Currently, the procedure involves a written examination which covers a comprehensive understanding of orthodontics. Once this is successfully completed, the orthodontist must present actual patient case reports, which demonstrate excellence in care and methodology. These cases are then evaluated by a panel of experts, and discussed during an oral examination. This oral examination is the final phase of board-certification. If the applicant successfully passes these stages, he or she is then officially board-certified for a limited time period. Every 10 years, the orthodontist must maintain their certification through continued testing.

Did you know that only one-third of all licensed orthodontists areboard-certified? Orthodontists are eligible for this endorsement only after they graduate from an accredited four-year dental school and complete a two- to three-year orthodontic residency. The certification process is rigorous, and includes a written exam, and oral exam, and a clinical case presentation. This voluntary assessment is intended to demonstrate the doctors absolute dedication to his or her field.

Every team member at our practice is specifically trained in orthodontics. In fact, we stay up to date with the latest techniques and technologies through regular continuing education courses. This allows us to provide the utmost in care for our patients. We respect and value everyone who walks through our door. Therefore, we strive to treat each patient just as we would treat a member of our own family.

Dr. Roy believes that orthodontics is about more than just straightening teeth. To achieve and maintain long-lasting oral health, one must align the teeth, position the jaw joints, and open the airway. Therefore, our approach to orthodontics involves addressing health and function in addition to aesthetics. By investing in your smile now, you can enjoy a lifetime of benefits.

I want to retract my review that I wrote a few weeks or so. I learned the doctor was unaware of the pain I was in at the time of my visit. I want to thank the doctor for making me aware of that. The staff and doctor has been more than accommodating to me at every visit. I want to Thank them for all they do!

Just went back last week pain in mouth. I was told to gargle. I have been following the advice of the assistants. I am not saying the assistants are wrong. I am still in pain. I don't understand why doctor did not take a look at my mouth as well and make assessment. I can't keep making these long trips to say you need to gargle.

I have been a patient for almost 2 years,I was a little reluctant not to have Dr. Roy to complete my treatment but I saw the new Dr. In July and today, and I am totally confident with her ability to complete my treatment. My husband is a retired dentist of 50 years so I know a lot about dentistry and she is a great orthodontist!!

I started coming to Roy Orthodontics at 16 years old I am now 20 and it has been an absolute pleasure going there. Dr. Roy has created an amazing team of very kind, caring and knowledgeable individuals. Everyone from Doctors, technicians and receptionists are truly remarkable. I had braces for 2 years and have been coming back for follow up retainer visits. Every time I come back I always feel the same love and welcoming atmosphere like the first time I walked in. At this practice you aren't treated like a patient, you are treated like family.

UPDATE: I got my braces off today. It is now 10/20/21, roughly 15 months since I wrote this first review. My opinion of this office has NOT changed. The reception crew are super friendly, efficient and fun and professional. The assistants (EVEN THE NEW ONES, Y'all know who you are) are personable, sympathetic, attentive and enthusiastic and kind. Dr. Roy is an excellent fellow with a great sense of humor who is also incredibly dedicated to his art. And I do think this is his art. See, at my consultation he said something about not just straightening teeth but also correcting bites. And y'all, he's a freaking wizard, him and all his team. If you anxiety about dentists, come here. If you are an adult and need braces, come here. If you are a kid's parent (or a kid reading this, times have changed since I was a kid) come here. I did not shop around so I don't know comparable costs, but the cost of this office is 1000000% worth it. I'm 34 years old with anxiety about my teeth and these folks have given me the best bite I've ever had plus the confidence I needed leaving the office. I legit cannot wait to visit them again to get my retainers, and to randomly drop in and bring them cookies. PREVIOUS REVIEW: So far I'm really impressed with this office. I've been through 2 consultations and 1 diagnostic session, and everyone has been incredibly welcoming and nice. Shout out to Kevin, who not only tolerated my anxiety but also explained it to Dr Roy when my mouth was full of bite xray things. Kevin deserves a raise. Looking forward to getting my adult braces with this crew.

I'm not really sure what to do at this point other than leave a review. I've been trying for a couple of months to get some kind of confirmation from Dr. Roy to fix a massive mistake he made which he gave his word he would cover the cost to correct. First of all, every interaction I've had in person and on the phone with Dr. Roy or his staff has been professional and pleasant. Unfortunately, that's been the only positive to my treatment there. I indicated to Dr. Roy during my consultation a few years ago that I had a small timeframe for treatment due to an expected transfer. Dr. Roy was confident he could take care of me in that time and if not, he assured a transfer shouldn't be an issue. After agreeing and paying to start treatment, it was delayed months due to supposed shipping issues with an expander. Once it finally arrived, Dr. Roy snapped one of the anchor screws in half in my palette from the force of him wrenching it into my bone while I was fully awake with just a local anesthetic. Possibly one of the worst experiences in any medical or dental situation I've had. However, Dr. Roy apologized and assured me it was ok to leave the broken hardware in my palette and that when the time came to remove it, he would personally cover the cost. Fast forward a couple of years and my new orthodontist is ready to remove the expander/TAD. He agrees a surgeon is needed. I've reached out to Dr. Roy's office no less than 6-7 times over the course of the past couple of months and have consistently gotten the run around about honoring his word and covering the $3,250 (out of pocket) surgery that I need solely because of his mistake. My orthodontic treatment is on hold indefinitely because I can't afford the surgery and his office is "figuring out what they want to do" and won't give me a straight answer or the decency of a return call from him or his office manager. I feel bad for the office staff because they're having to consistently field the awkward calls from me and my surgeon asking for payment that he promised and it appears they don't have any answers either. Judging from all the other reviews, it appears this is atypical service from Dr. Roy's office and that I'm unlucky it fell on me. I would really appreciate it if he would simply honor the promise he made and just helped me out of this situation that he put me in. Update: A few minutes after posting this review, the office manager called me and explained there was a miscommunication and they had not fully understood the situation. As of now, the surgery cost has been covered minus the consultation. I believe it could have been handled better but I truly appreciate them coming through and how professional the staff was with me through this.

This review is long overdue, but since receiving treatment for the decade and some change (I'm not sure how long it was exactly, but it was a long time), I can say Dr. Roy and his team knew exactly what they were doing. Since I was a kid, I had my bottom jaw growing crooked. With careful planning and treatment through the years, they straighten out my teeth and prepared me for the surgery I needed to get my mouth straighten. Its been about a year or so since I have finished being their client, but I am still happy with the result of all those years of work Dr. Roy and his team have done to my teeth and jaw. They are some of the nicest and most understanding people you'll meet. Thank you Roy Orthodontics! It was a pleasure doing business with you and I will definitely be recommending you guys.
