You've heard of dental fillings and crowns, but have you heard of inlays and onlays? In the past, dental crowns were always the go-to solution for restoring teeth too damaged to be repaired with fillings. But today, there are intermediary options: Inlays and Onlays.

Inlays and onlays (also known as indirect fillings) are strong, durable tooth restorations that are custom made to repair a tooth, and are great options for restoring teeth with medium to large cavities. Large fillings will actually weaken a tooths structure, which greatly increases the risk of the tooth breaking, cracking, and eventually requiring further and more complicated treatment like root canal therapy. And though dental crowns are strong and durable, they always require a significant amount of tooth structure removal in order to fit the crown over the existing tooth, even if a lot of healthy tooth structure exists.

Inlays fill the space in between a tooths cusps (the raised portions on the biting surfaces of teeth) and are used to repair teeth that have decay or damage between the cusps. If damage is too widespread or deep for a simple filling but does not affect the cusps, an inlay may be recommended.

Onlays spread over a tooths cusps and lay on the top of the tooth, molded to restore the shape and structure of the tooth. If patients have a chipped, broken, or decayed area of a tooth that includes one or more cusps, an onlay may be recommended.

During the first visit, your dentist will prepare your damaged tooth, take an impression, and place a temporary filling to protect the treated tooth. Between your two dental visits, the dental impression is sent to a dental lab to create the indirect filling, which is usually crafted from shade-matched porcelain. During the second visit, the temporary filling is removed and the custom-made indirect filling is cemented into place, resulting in a strong, beautifully natural looking restored tooth.

While inlays and onlays tend to cost slightly more than traditional fillings, they are a great investment due to their longevity, strength, stain resistance, and natural appearance. Patients who practice good oral hygiene (flossing and brushing daily) usually see their indirect filling last 10-20 years or longer.

If you have a damaged or decayed tooth and seek to be conservative in your dental care meaning that you prefer solutions that preserve the maximum amount of natural tooth structure while maintaining the form and function of your bite - inlays and onlays could be the perfect choice for you.

I absolutely love this office. I've been going here for almost 10 years after coming in for an emergency root canal and they've always treated me well. I have a lot of issues with my teeth and I'm always nervous going to the dentist, but they never make me feel ashamed for the work I need done. I've had cleanings done by multiple hygienist and they've all done a wonderful job and fillings are quick and painless. Thank you Rose City Dental!

Showed up to my scheduled cleaning to be told I wasn't on the schedule. I rescheduled my appointment and they called the night before and told me that time wasn't available and that I would have to change my appointment time for the next day. The schedulers are incompetent. I never rescheduled after that!

Front dest people is very cold and rude. She said my service is bad and they just hung up on me 3 times. Didn't even call back. I guess they don't want services.

My experience at Rose City Dental was tremendous. The staff was patient friendly and welcoming, but more important was the professionalism extended to me by Dr. Lee. His expertise and manner made me feel extremely comfortable despite considerable anxiety about my prospective dental work. Every subsequent visit has been exceptional. I highly recommend Rose City Dental with no reservations. Great experience!

We have been getting dental treatments at this clinic for a few years now. We really like the dentist (the business owner) here. He is very knowledgable and professional. He also treats his patients with respect and tries to provide the best care. When we had a billing issue with the office staff a few weeks ago he immediately stepped in and resolved the issue for us. I wish all business owners are like him.

I LOVE Rose City Dental so much that my husband and I moved to Spokane a year ago and I will make the 6hr drive to get my teeth done here. Dr. Tae is a true artist and master of his craft: the dedication and care he gives his patients is truly wonderful and the results are beautiful

I felt very comfortable when I stepped into the office, everyone was on top of it! Dr Tae Lee kept me feeling at ease and made me smile. It had been a very long time since I had been to the Dentist. I now will be a regular because the doctor made me feel like he would be there for me and take care of my dental needs! Amen!

My son and I have been going to Rose City Dental for about 4 years. We actually look forward to our annual exams b/c the front desk staff is super friendly, kind and knowledgeable. We get the same dental hygienist most years and they are flexible in making both our appointments at the same time which is super convenient. The hours the staff keep are also convenient for working parents and Dr. Tae is super sweet and funny. Their waiting area, bathroom and dental rooms are all clean with the latest technology available. During COVID they were highly efficient, cleaned everything we touched and we felt safe. I see the same faces every year which tells me this is a good place to work and the office has a small family feel to it. I chose this dentist b/c it was conveniently located to our home. The only con is parking. The lot has about a handful of spots, but there is parking along 122nd.

Wanted to give a shout out to Dr. Lee and his staff. I am a dental office manager for a dentist that is out of town for CE; I broke a molar that left it super sharp to my tongue and needed to have it addressed asap; upon contacting 4 other office that were either closed or too busy to work me in; Rose City Dental took care of my issue. Although I work for a private dental office; I would not hesitate to send people to Dr. Lee or return myself if needed.

This is by far the best dentist and dental office I've ever been to. Dr. Tae and the entire staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. For me, dental work is quite nerve racking, Dr. Tae immediately put me at ease unlike any other dentist I've seen. He treats his patients and staff with the utmost respect and kindness (and has a great sense of humor too!). I came initially a few months ago with a painful emergency after a quick google search, Dr. Tae was able to see me the same day, and got me out of pain completely. I keep returning because these are absolutely the best dental experiences I've had, anywhere. If you've been putting off dental work because it's a little scary- give Rose City a call. I truly wish I would have sooner. It also doesn't hurt that pricing is more affordable here than other dentists have been for me in the past. Thank you Dr. Tae, from the bottom of my heart for making a difference for me, and all your other patients!
