Throughout his career, Dr. Shlafer has trained with many renowned dental experts at some of the most prestigious institutions in the field. As a dental student at the University of Michigan, Dr. Shlafer studied under several top reconstructive and cosmetic dentists. After graduating with his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1985, he continued his education at the Center for Advanced Dental Studies in St. Petersburg, FL. During his graduate studies, Dr. Shlafer learned the principles and skills required to practice complete, quality, and predictable dentistry from the Center's founder, legendary dental expert Peter E. Dawson, DDS. In addition to the Center for Advanced Dental Studies, Dr. Shlafer also credits the training he received at the Pride Management Institution for his patient-centered approach to dentistry. While committed to staying abreast of the latest dental techniques and technology, Dr. Shlafer remains ever mindful of the applicability for his practice, only pursuing endeavors that can be implemented to improve the level of care or comfort for his patients.

An avid reader, Dr. Shlafer counts Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near and Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged among his favorite literary works.
As a Ukrainian refugee who immigrated to the United States at the age of 18, Dr. Shlafer maintains that anything is possible through hard work and purposeful determination: 'Success is achieved by leading and following our dreams.'
I have been a dental hygienist with Dr. Roman Shlafer since 1998. I received my degree in Dental Hygiene from Ferris State College and studied at the University of Detroit to become licensed to administer local anesthesia. I have extensive postgraduate studies in periodontal therapy and this experience, coupled with a gentle touch, has developed into an extremely effective approach to the treatment and maintenance of gum disease. I know firsthand what it feels like to have a healthy smile makeover and want all of my patients to feel this way.
After graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1985 with a degree in Dental Hygiene, I worked as a dental hygienist in Bern, Switzerland for two years. Being immersed in a foreign country has given me the opportunity to experience a new culture first hand. It also offered me the privilege of traveling with my husband to most of the European countries, as well and Russia and Turkey. These experiences have enriched my view of the world and have affected the way I have helped raise our children. They have also made for an interesting and quite often funny exchange of stories with my patients.
Working with Dr. Shlafer for more than 15 years now, I can say without hesitation, that the patients I see are an extension of my family. We discuss health issues well beyond dentistry. I believe a more holistic approach is necessary for total health. My patients well-being is my priority. Their experience here is very important to me. DIAGNOdent is an advanced method of detecting cavities. It uses a laser diode to inspect your teeth and gives a digital readout that identifies even the smallest bit of decay. For your safety, we use digital x-rays at our practice that reduce radiation exposure by up to 90%. Best of all, we use a special computer sensor that allows us to display the x-ray images on a screen directly in front of you.

Microabrasion is a quick and painless solution for removing stains and discoloration from your teeth. Stronger than teeth whitening or bleaching treatment, microabrasion uses hydrochloric acid and pumice to gently remove thin layers of tooth enamel and eliminate stains.

I highly recommend Dr. Shlafer. I have been going to him for years and can't be more happy that he is taking care of my teeth. About 7 years ago I called and left a voice mail on Sunday asking to be seen due to a broken tooth. Very next Monday morning I received a call back and the same Monday afternoon I walked out of his office with a fixed tooth. I drive about 40 mins each way to see Dr. Schafer and every time I see him I confirm to myself that I made a right choice to be his patient.

I've had better experieces here than with any other health professional. Dr. Shlafer and his staff go above and beyond to keep you comfortable, healthy and happy. I will never replace Dr. Shlafer or his amazing staff (and esp his lovely assistant Marybeth) I just got a filling and I'm so happy I could cry. I actually did try going to a new dentist last month, they were horrible. I'm so glad I came back here! The filling was painless, fast, and affordable. Nobody could ask for a better dentist. I saw the review that lady Jessica left, I think it's insane she put one star. If she had an issue, she should have talked to them about it. They are the kindest and most patient staff. Clearly that lady had her own issues or there would be more people saying similar things. Update June 2020 still super happy, the hygienist, May, did my cleaning this time she is also very good my mom and best friend are considering coming here soon for their cleaning! Update 2022: still the best, Stephanie is also great with my cleaning!! Just finished my suresmile and very satisfied with the results of that. He shaped my one tooth as well so it would match the other side!

I have never been so comfortable with a dentist and his wonderful assistant they make me feel so at ease very professional pleasant took their time with me I'm almost looking forward to having my dental work done lol. He is a excellent dentist. I started with him about ten years ago. I had not been in a dental office in over 20 years. I thought he would tell me I would have to lose some teeth. I also thought it would be painful. I had bad experience with other dentists. He told me we had a lot of work to do but, we can do it and nobody will cause any pain to me. He is a man of his word. I've been with him ever since. If you want to be treated like a movie star and have a movie star smile, this is where you should be. I like going to the dentist now. I know my grill is on point

Dr. Roman Shlafer is the ***** #1 Best Dentist In Michigan. I know this for a fact, because I am a current patient and a former employee! I just had dental work done here last week and Dr. Shlafer saved my molar from a root canal, with his exceptional and meticulous dental care. His shots are painless and his work is pure perfection! He is relaxing (although I am normally a dental phobic) and he has a gentle touch and a great sense of humor. Dr, Shlafer and his staff are friendly, caring, skilled, knowledgeable and experienced and they make going to the dentist a relaxing, pleasant experience. Most of his staff have been with him for about 20 years. His dental hygienists give gentle shots, also. I highly recommend this dental office to family, friends and any one I meet who is looking for the best dentistry has to offer! I am a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and I practiced dental hygiene for over 25 years and then I worked in dental administration for 6 years, so I know a perfect dentist and dental practice when I experience one! The whole staff is super friendly! Seen on time and Venise performs a great cleaning and is really gentle. Dr. Shlafer always take time to examine my mouth and answer any questions I might have. Always feel that I receive great care at the office!

Dr. Roman Shlafer and his staff are definately the best! The dentist has integrity and knows what he is doing, and his staff members are exceptionally well trained as well. You can bet Dr. Roman Shlafer performs only necessary work, and is a perfectionist at what he does. I no longer worry about unnecesary work being performed, and/or other unscrupulous practices being performed on me. My level of confidence in his work is unsurpassed, and my comfort level is superb, while in his care. I highly recommend Dr. Roman Shlafer and his associates for all your dental needs. You will have no regrets! Numerous other patients can also attest to the high level of care and expertise he performs and practices on a routine/daily basis. Why would you go anywhere else? Dr. Shlafer is great. His staff is nice and cordial as well. I've had the first side of my lanap laser surgery, and he helped with my bite by grinding a few of the back teeth as well. I'm very pleased. I have the second lanap laser treatment (other quad) plus a Wisdom tooth extraction next week. Lanap has been great. I may have taken 1 ibuprofen that evening and it wasn't really necessary. I just wanted to sleep good without any issues. And there hasn't been. Safety is impeccable with shoe covers, temp check, and air cleaners in every room! Glad I chose to come to Dr. Shalfer's Office. Update: 11/10/2021 It's been officially a year and after getting the Lanap Surgery and I'm soooo glad I did. Great improvements, easy, no stitches, quicker healing. Went from 10 to 3s. I'm so happy with my results. Thank you to the entire staff, so nice and caring. So happy with my decisions. Best dentist Update: 7/11/22 Doing great. Teeth and gums are healthy. Now in aligners with Dr. Reynolds, along with my Dr. Shlafer's guidance and care. Very happy with todays visit as always. The office is wonderfully managed and although I'll miss my Hygenist Mira, my new Hygenist Venise is super sweet, professional and handles me well.
