I thoroughly enjoy the practice of dentistry, especially in a community the size of Gig Harbor, where I see my patients everywhere I go. I treasure the trust they have placed in me, and the friendships that have developed over the years!

After graduating from Washington State University (Go Cougs!) with my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, I spent nearly four years as a Navy Supply Officer. During this time, I met a friend who was a Naval Dentist. After observing him treating patients, I decided to change course, which led me to the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where I attained my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Degree.

I attended dental school on the Armed Forces Dental Scholarship and went back to serve in the Navy for four more years as a Dental Officer. I remained in the Reserves, but transferred to the Army Reserve and served for 13 more years, including activation during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. I am now a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel.

I attend continuing education courses every year concentrating on new materials, equipment, techniques and technology. I strongly feel that if you are not moving forward continually in your education, you are, in fact moving backward. As a part of my continuing education, I am a member of the American Dental Association, the Washington State Dental Association and the Pierce County Dental Society.

I have been practicing dentistry since 1976, and truly love what I do. I especially enjoy getting to know patients as friends first, as it brings real joy to practicing dentistry! Also, guiding patients through potentially stressful situations and creating a calm and comfortable experience is very rewarding to me.

I grew up in Tacoma, and have lived on Fox Island for the past 30 years. My wife, Peg, and I have been married nearly 43 years. We have three children who were raised here in Gig Harbor. My daughter, Kristin, and her husband, Kenner, have two boys, Kellen and Braden. My daughter, Keri, and her husband, Ryan, have three girls, Mallorie, Ashleigh, and Makenna. My son, Ryan, and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Dominick and Campbell, with a third on the way!

When I'm not helping people achieve beautiful and healthy smiles, I love to travel and spend time with family. My wife and I also watch quite a few of our grandchildren's activities, such as sports or choir. I also enjoy shopping and reading which means that I accompany Peg while she shops, and I find a comfortable seat and read.

I have been an active member of Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church for 15 years, and of the Northwest Medical Mission Van for four years. My wife was the Swim Coach at Gig Harbor High School for 20 years and I spent many hours with fundraising, scorekeeping, and general support.

In 2002, I moved to Gig Harbor with my wife, Ann, in anticipation of starting a family and starting a dental practice. After working part time at some local dental offices, I joined Dr. Johnson's practice as an associate in 2003, and became a full partner in 2007. I am very lucky and privileged to be part of such a reputable practice. I enjoy seeing patients everywhere we go in our small community, and I take pride in the work we do.

Prior to becoming a dentist, I attended Haverford College, where I attained my Bachelor of Science Degree. I then earned my DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. After dental school, I moved to New York City and completed two years of Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Columbia University and practiced for two years in a private dental office.

I feel very strongly that I need to keep current with new techniques and research to ensure that my patients receive the highest quality care possible. I complete continuing education through various study clubs hosted by local dental specialists, lectures sponsored by dental associations and dental product and supply companies, reviewing dental journal articles, or by watching teaching sessions on the internet.

I have been practicing general dentistry since 1998. Dentistry is rewarding because the hard work that I put in is reflected in the trust that develops with my patients. I enjoy working in a practice where everyone strives for the same goal, which is good dental and overall health. I also truly enjoy the personal relationships I have with our patients, and am always happy to make new connections.

I am originally from Touliu, Taiwan, and have lived in Gig Harbor since 2002. Moving to Gig Harbor has been a great experience. My wife and I are able to raise our two wonderful children in a relaxed atmosphere. My wife, Ann, and I have a daughter named Mia and a son named Daniel. In my spare time, I love being with my family. I also enjoy golf, reading, cooking and watching movies, and often volunteer at my children's schools.

At the dental practice of Dr. Roger Johnson and Dr. Raymond Kao, our friendly, dedicated, and energetic dental team is committed to working with you and your family to create a positive dental experience every time you visit our practice.
