Dr. Joan Anderson uses her wide experience to bring you a high level of care. She received a BS magna cum laude from Allegheny College while also winning the Soccer Academic All American award. She brought that focus to her dental studies at the University of Michigan where she graduated with the Doctor in Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 2008.
While in dental school, Dr. Joan Anderson received several awards, including the American College of Dentists Outstanding Student Leader Award in recognition of her leadership in ethics and the Ida Gray Award for her commitment to diversity. She has extensive experience in clinical dentistry serving both children and adults. Dr. Anderson has also published her research in The Journal of Dental Education.
Dr. Anderson makes her personal and professional home here in Harrisonburg. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, the Shenandoah Valley Dental Association, the American Association of Women Dentists, and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. She also attends continuing education courses across the country to ensure her skills are cutting edge. In her spare time, Dr. Anderson enjoys baking, hiking, and learning to play her guitar.

Best dental experience anywhere! Everyone in my family had a great experience and Dr. Anderson identified a medical issue that a physician hadn't even noticed yet. The best care I've ever experienced at a dental office.

It had been a long while since I had been to a dentist. I have a bad gag reflex and I had a fear of dentists! I was experiencing a toothache and realized I needed to have 3 teeth removed. I am so glad I chose Dr. Anderson! It wasn't as bad an experience as I thought! She kept asking me if I was ok and I felt she was doing a great job of calming me and explaining what she was doing! The staff was very nice and made me feel comfortable too. Thank you Dr. A!

I am no longer scared about going to the dentist! I feel relaxed and not as tense since I have been seeing Dr Anderson. The atmosphere is good and everyone has always been nice to me, and I have been coming here for several years now. If I have an emergency (at least to me) they have always worked me into the schedule the same day I call. Highly recommend!

The only reason that I gave our visit 2 stars is because when my son was having a bad toothache they were able to get him in the same day. Other than that I was not impressed. They waited too long after numbing his mouth before they pulled the tooth so he felt alot of pain. I have dental insurance and wasn't aware that they charge almost $300 to a tooth and when I didnt have quite enough money for the visit they never offered to let me make payments. I had to have the full amount which was way more than it should have been anyway

At first I loved it here, Dr Joan and the hygienists were always nice and wonderful .. then they stopped taking my insurance halfway through the year. After the second time this happened, I found a new dentist instead of changing insurances again. I'm so glad I did! The new dentist finally explained the pain I was having on the right side of my mouth and after two root canals and two crowns, it's been addressed (old silver fillings fracturing my back molars that had to come out).The old dentist also put more than 6 fillings in my less than 6 yr old's mouth. The new dentist has shown me on X-rays how most of these fillings didn't even go deep enough to address the cavity (and some didn't even have cavities!!!), and most of them are now cracked and failing and need silver crowns . They also were horrible with billing and explaining insurance issues - quoted me some treatment prices that I based insurance selections on only to charge insurance something completely different which resulted in higher copays. Reception was always unhelpful and rude when I had questions or needed clarification. Wasted a lot of money here and ruined my kids teeth! Will also be filing complaints and copies of X-rays regarding my son's teeth to the American Dental Association.

Can't say enough about the kindness and professionalism at Rocktown. By far my favourite dentist, Dr Joan is thoughtful and attentive. I always feel taken care of and heard. They have a tv which is super nice for distracting me while getting my work done. The staff is super friendly and very good at explaining things. They do their best to give you estimates; which I've found to be hard to find in this area.

I have been going to Rocktown a couple of years now. They have always done a wonderful job taking care of my dental needs. I was floored today when the receptionist was very rude as I tried to explain a change in my dental insurance. I understand that I didn't have all of the information that she needed. However, she cut me off twice with "What do you want me to do about it!" I was barely able to attempt to explain. I tried to show her what I did have and but she wasn't interested. Having worked in the customer service industry all of my career I understand that customer's often need to give more info. However, they should be asked politely and possible solutions could be offered. I have never had an individual in a professional sitting such as this be so rude and unhelpful. I'm sure things will work out in the end because the rest of the staff is wonderful.

Dr. Anderson and Rocktown Dental we're recommended to us by a pediatrician. The whole family comes here now, three generations! We love Dr. Anderson and all the staff! They are very personable, they explain what they are doing, and always ask about our questions or concerns. As weird as it sounds, we all can't wait for our appointments! Highly recommend for anyone and especially for children! Plus, the music is awesome!
