Some babies begin getting teeth earlier or later than others. Additionally, teething (when baby or primary teeth first break through the gums) times can vary with each child. Typically, the first baby teeth to erupt will be the lower front (anterior) teeth, which commonly appear between 6 to 8 months of age.

Ordinarily, an erupting permanent tooth will push against the root of a baby tooth and slowly dissolve or resorb it. The baby tooth then loses stability, becoming mobile and falling out. In swoops the Tooth Fairy! The permanent tooth will then continue to push through and assume its place in the jaw.

Sometimes when a permanent tooth is erupting, it passes by the root of the baby tooth. When this happens, it may end up growing in right behind the baby tooth. This phenomenon is called ectopic eruption, and this most often happens with the lower front (anterior) teeth. In most cases, the ectopic eruption will resolve on its own without further intervention. The baby teeth will eventually fall out on their own, and the tongue will push the permanent teeth into their proper positions.

Family dentist Dr. Minh Bui (Dr. Minh) was inspired to become a dentist by her older sister, Dr. Quynh Bui. Dr. Minh graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Brandeis University, then followed her older sister to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. While in school, you would often spot her assisting Dr. Quynh Bui during her school breaks.

Dr. Minh enjoys working alongside her sister at their practice and continuing to provide the excellent care patients have come to expect at Rockingham Pediatric Dental. In order to provide the best care, Dr. Minh attends multiple continuing education courses and meetings each year to stay current on the latest dental techniques and technology. When not at the Rockingham office, Dr. Minh loves watching quiz shows, baking sweets, and chasing after her nieces and nephews in the yard.

Most healthy individuals should visit the dentist twice a year, typically every six months. These visits are for regular dental exams and cleanings. There are plenty of reasons, however, that it may be suggested to see the dentist more frequently. These include but are not limited to, being a smoker, being pregnant, or having a disease such as cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. The dentist will figure out an appropriate schedule based on your dental and other health needs. Keep in mind that simply because you receive a good report one visit, that does not mean you should delay your next one! Dental problems can easily develop from one visit to the next, so the best way to stay on top of your dental health is to maintain regular visits!

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing once a day. The time of day to floss is really up to personal preference, as long as it can be accommodated into your schedule. The ideal length of dental floss to use is about 18 inches long. The length should be wrapped around the thumb and index finger, with about 1 to 2 inches of floss in between to floss the teeth. Hold the floss taut and place it in between two teeth. Then proceed to gently glide the floss up and down, rubbing against the sides of the tooth. Take care not to move the floss into your gums, as they can become scratched or bruised. As the floss approaches your gums, curve the floss at the base of the tooth into a C shape. This makes it easier for thefloss to reach the space between the gums and your tooth. Repeat these steps with each tooth. Its best to move to a new, clean, section of floss for each tooth.

I took my 4 year old daughter and two year old son to this clinic. My daughter had a very bad experience before, so she could not stop crying at the minute she was in the clinic. But the dentist was really great with my kids! Took it slow and made it fun for my kids! Dr. Bui was so patient, warm, and professional! -Lily B.

Fluoride is an element which has proven beneficial to teeth, though it must be at proper amount. Minimal to no fluoride will not sufficiently strengthen teeth against cavities. An overabundance of fluoride ingestion by children of pre-school age may lead to dental fluorosis, a chalky white to possibly brown discoloration of permanent teeth. Children often receive more fluoride than their parents realize, so being aware of potential sources can reduce the chances of dental fluorosis.

Children aged 2 to 3 years old may not be able to sufficiently spit out fluoride toothpaste when brushing. Consequently, these children may end up ingesting a large amount of fluoride during brushing. During this critical period of permanent tooth development, toothpaste ingestion puts children at the highest risk of dental fluorosis.

Excessive intake or improper use of fluoride supplements can also lead to fluorosis. Infants under 6 months of age should not receive fluoride drops, tablets, or fortified vitamins. After this age, any fluoride supplements should only be given to children after taking other fluoride sources into account, and upon receiving the recommendation of the childs pediatrician or pediatric dentist near you.

Specific foods contain high levels of fluoride, particularly powdered concentrated infant formula, soy-based infant formula, infant dry cereals, infant chicken products, and creamed spinach. Please read the nutrition labels or contact the company if you are unsure. Certain beverages also contain high amounts of fluoride, such as white grape juices, decaffeinated teas, and juice beverages manufactured in fluorinated cities.

Young children can develop a serious form of tooth decay, known as baby bottle tooth decay, or even bottle rot. Such decay is caused by an infants teeth being exposed to liquids containing sugar on a frequent, prolonged basis. These liquids include milk (breast or otherwise), formula, fruit juice, and other sweetened drinks.

Putting a baby down for a nap or overnight sleep with a bottle filled with anything other than water can seriously and rapidly decay teeth. Sweetened liquids collect around a childs teeth, providing plaque bacteria ample opportunity to form acids that degrade tooth enamel. If your baby requires a comfort bottle at bedtime, it should only have water. In cases where the child wont sleep without both the bottle and its usual beverage, you should gradually dilute the contents of the bottle with water over a period of two to three weeks.

After a feeding, you should wipe your babys gums with either a wet washcloth or gauze to remove any plaque. This is easiest done with the babys head in your lap or in an otherwise reclined position, so you can easily see the childs whole mouth.

Once permanent teeth grow in, thumb sucking may cause problems with development of the mouth and alignment of teeth. It may also cause changes to the roof of the mouth as well. Pacifiers may affect the teeth in similar ways to sucking fingers and thumbs, but they often an easier habit to break.

Ultimately, the intensity of the sucking determines whether or not dental problems occur. Many children will thumb sucking on their own as they grow out of infancy, but in the case that the child is still engaging in the habit after age 3, we recommend parents discourage it and use positive reinforcement to help the child stop.

A sealant is a clear protective coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces/grooves of the back teeth. These teeth include the molars and premolars, where four out of five cavities occur. Sealants protect these decay-prone areas of teeth, functioning as a shield against food, plaque, and acids.

In order to minimize any dental issues, children should generally avoid sports drinks, consuming water before, during, and after participating in sports. If you are considering giving your child a sports drink, please consult your pediatric dentist first.

Some dentists will specialize in special needs dentistry, personalizing care according to each patients unique needs. Considerate dentists will account for each patients personality and needs so they are sufficiently prepared for the next visit.

These are simply an example of the conditions that special needs dentists their staff are trained to accommodate. Activities that may seem simple or routine for some children may be particularly difficult for others.

Xylitol has been recognized by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) as being beneficial to childrens oral health. The use of xylitol sweetened products has shown a strong reduction in new tooth decay, even improving some existing cavities. Xylitol serves as an enhancement to existing dental prevention methods. Low decay rates have persisted for years even after the trials have been completed.

Xylitol can be found throughout nature in smaller amounts. Fruits and berries, lettuce, mushrooms, and corn cobs. One cup of raspberries contains less than one gram of xylitol, foods with xylitol are not typically a sufficient source. Studies have suggested that the amount of xylitol intake to provide positive results ranges from 4-20 grams per day, divided over 3-7 periods of consumption. Higher consumption than this did not result in any great cavity reduction, and consumption of less than 3 times per day demonstrated no effect. When looking for gum or other xylitol products, make sure you search for items containing 100% xylitol.

Once a child begins participating in recreational or sporting activities, there can be risk of injury. To protect your childs smile, a well-fitted mouth guard/protector should be a crucial part of their athletic gear, worn during any activity that may result in contact with the face or mouth. Mouth guards help prevent a variety of injuries, such as chipped/broken teeth, or trauma to the tongue, lips, face, or jaw. A securely-fitted/custom mouth guard will remain in place while your child wears it, leaving it easy for them to talk and breathe.

If your child is complaining of a toothache, tooth pain, tooth sensitivity, or gum pain, its a good idea to check for signs of a cavity. If you notice spots or stains on their teeth, that may be a sign your child has a cavity. At this time, its a good idea to check for visible signs of holes in your childs teeth. Open their mouth and inspect all their teeth for holes. Since the cavity begins to eat away at the tooth, you may also notice chips or cracks in the teeth that could be cavities.

If your child has a cavity, youre probably wondering how to treat cavities in kids. Just like adults, restorative dental services like dental fillings are commonly used to treat cavities in toddlers children. fillings can be used on baby teeth as well as permanent teeth. To put a filling in, the dentist will remove all the tooth decay and then fill the cavity hole or holes with composite (white) filling.

The office is open on some Saturdays. This is great for me since I need to bring my mother to the dentist. They are very nice and made her extremely happy by restoring her smile. My mother said she was very comfortable and didn't feel anything when the dentist was extracting a tooth. I'm going to continue to bring her to the office.

In many dental offices, a hygienist cleans your teeth and the dentist spends about one minute inspecting your teeth. At this practice the dentist performs the entire cleaning.

I had a difficult time getting my kids to a dentist. I tried many different dentists from Haverhill, Methuen, Lawrence, and Andover. My kids like their dentist now and make an effort in dental care. Great team, friendly, and understanding. It's truly a relief to have found a great dentist.

I have been going to the same dentist for over 20 years now. All Smiles is now Rockingham Pediatric Dental, and even though some of the team changed, my feelings have not. Dr.Bui is great, and everyone there is super friendly and helpful. No one likes going to the dentist, but having people that are friendly and know what they are doing makes it a much better experience. Rose has been a familiar face all of those years, and it is always great to catch up with her too. I will continue to keep going, and hope the next 20 years are just as good as the last. Thank you for making a filling even less painful!

I had the privilege to work with Dr. Bui while she was in her residency program at Tufts School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Bui was very patience with her patients yet very efficient and fast with her dental procedures, which I think it's important skills to have working with children. I feel confident to send my friends and family to see Dr. Bui knowing that she would treat my kids as if they were her own.
