Using the most advanced techniques available today, we can perform root canals, treat endodontic injuries and perform endodontic surgery with precision and comfort. We utilize state-of-the-art technology, including 3D digital imaging, to ensure you are receiving the specialized care you deserve.
Our practice utilizes state-of-the-art, small volume cone-beam CT (computed tomography) technology that provides highly accurate, 3-D radiographic images for the diagnosis, planning and treatment of endodontic disease. This allows three-dimensional visualization of teeth, bone, sinuses and surrounding structures with minimal radiation to the patient, enabling a level of anatomical accuracy and patient care not possible with 2-D technologies (regular dental x-rays). Cone-beam CT technology allows us to provide innovative, high-quality, patient care.
Dental radiographs are invaluable aids in diagnosing, treating, and maintaining dental health. Exposure time for dental radiographs is minimal. Riverbend Endodontics utilizes Digital Imaging Technologies within the office. With digital imaging, exposure time is about 90 percent less when compared to traditional radiographs. Digital imaging can also help us retrieve valuable diagnostic information.
The doctor carefully chooses which and when radiographs are taken. There are many guidelines that we follow. Radiographs allow us to see everything we cannot see with our own eyes. Radiographs enable us to detect cavities in between your teeth, determine bone level, and analyze the health of your bone. We can also examine the roots and nerves of teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage when trauma occurs.
The introduction of the surgical microscope has revolutionized the field of Endodontic Microsurgery. We have invested in surgical microscopes that provide unparalleled magnification and illumination for our surgical procedures.

Dr. Van Nieuwenhuyzen was raised in Pipestone, Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Saint Cloud State University. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Minnesota in 2006. It was during his time in dental school that he developed a keen interest in the specialty of endodontics and was accepted into the endodontic residency program. He obtained both his Master of Science degree and Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Minnesota in 2008.
Dr. Van Nieuwenhuyzen served in the United States Navy from 2008 to 2012, and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He served as the Endodontic Specialty Leader for the 3rd Dental Battalion. During this time he shared his expertise with new dentists during their credentialing tours both in Okinawa and mainland Japan. In 2012, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for outstanding professional achievement. His superb clinical performance also led to his selection as the 2011 Clinician of the Year and the winner of the Thomas P. Carroll Award for Clinical Excellence.
Dr. Van Nieuwenhuyzen stays educated on the latest advancements in the specialty of endodontics by maintaining memberships in the American Association of Endodontists, Iowa Association of Endodontics, American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association.

Dr. Van is a tremendously skilled clinician who utilizes state of the art materials and techniques. Marry that with an empathetic chair side manner and a kind, knowledgeable staff and it makes for an extremely pleasant experience. As a retired general dentist, I can certainly appreciate that Duane is an excellent endodontist. Thank you.

I can't thank Riverbend Endodontics enough!! I had unbearable pain with a tooth ache that needed a root canal. (My first ever! So I was super nervous). Lucky for me they had a cancellation and got me in right away!! Serious life-savers!! I was so nervous to have my tooth worked on with the amount of pain I was dealing with. But after I got numb I didn't feel a thing! I am also in the dental field and was very impressed with how well he explained everything and told me step by step what he was doing! The office administrator and the assistant were also very nice and welcoming!! I can't say it enough but thank you!

My experience here was great just a little pinch with the first couple of shots the Dr Duane Van Nieuwenhuyzen and staff were very nice. Had a Root canal done, he was very calming Explained everything when and what he was doing. Would recommend to everyone I know great work thank you!!!!.

I was referred to Riverbend Endodontics by my dentist to have a root canal. I was waking up in the middle of the night from pain. After calling them and telling them about my pain they had a cancellation and were able to get me in the same day and now I'm pain free. The staff was very friendly and I hope I don't ever have to do it again but if I do I will be going back to them!! I would highly recommend them to anyone!!!!

I am generally very anxious and nervous around dentists and people working in my mouth in general. Dr. Duane (or "Duane" as he prefers) took very good care of me during my root canal. I did not hardly feel any of the numbing injections (and I am being COMPLETELY honest for those of you who are skeptical), and very little discomfort afterwards that was hardly noticeable. I had to drove over an hour, as he was the closest provider in my network. I would be willing to drive back if I have issues in the future, even if there are providers in my network who are closer (although I sincerely hope I do not have to!). Great job! I would feel very comfortable coming back anytime!

Great experience pain free root canal and was given a permanent filling. My complaaint is that the permanent filling came out and the receptionist refused to do anything to help me. All she could do was repeat "go back to your dentist". Apparently they do not stand behind their work. We must have different definitions of 'permanent'.

My husband had to go in for a root canal and he gets quite anxious when it comes to dental work, as a prior experience was traumatic for him. We found riverbend endo to be easy-going and professional. We were quite impressed with doc's work - very clean and precise. Great job doc and team! Highly recommend their service.

I'm not one for leaving reviews but I felt this was necessary. Getting a root canal can seem scary and intimidating but Riverbend Endonotics makes it a comfortable and easy process. I've been there twice and both experiences have been absolutely great. The staff is very friendly and informative of their process and Dr. Friedl (he's very good to work with) continued to ask how I was doing and if I was ok. Honestly, I didn't feel a thing as they had me numbed up really well. They make the procedure so easy, I would compare it to getting a cavity filled - I highly recommend Riverbend Endonotics!

She walked in and out without a tear or fear!!! Long story short, my 11 years old daughter had an accident and broke her two front teeth! All of us are devastated and worried; not sure what's to do. Dr Van Nieuwenhuyzen took us in as soon as he could, calmed us down and explained clearly of the procedure and performed root canal and got her all fixed up! Just as if nothing had happened! He treated her as if she was his own kids with gentle and care!! We are so fortunate to have you in the Quad Cities!! You are our answer to prayers!! THANK YOU!!

I NEVER write reviews, but I just had the BEST dental experience I've ever had and I can't go without making sure that others are aware of the great work you guys do. I was referred to Riverbend by my dentist yesterday for a root canal and Riverbend was able to get me in today. I was TERRIFIED since the words "root canal" usually receive a horrible response by others when you tell them that you need it done (not to mention, the many horror stories). I had had one done previously by someone else, but was in excruciating pain from the tooth dying at the time that it was welcomed - so, it was a little scary to me to have it done again when I wasn't in pain and not as welcoming. Dr. Friedl and his staff were AMAZING. He could tell I was nervous and consistently reassured me that it would be nothing...and it WAS nothing! I didn't feel a THING! I've had FILLINGS worse than that! They even played some music for us to help pass the time by. Dr. Friedl was VERY gentle and often made sure I was doing okay. For someone who was very, very anxious about the procedure today, I want to thank you for the wonderful work that you did and for taking the time to be reassuring and comforting. I will refer you guys again and again and again for someone else just as scared as me (and even those who aren't!).
