When your father is known all over the world as a leading orthodontist and expert in jaw joint growth and treatment and your mother is dual-trained in prosthodontics and orthodontics, dentistry becomes part of your early life. Dr. Ikeda chose to pursue the specialty of orthodontics with the intent to treat her patients like family to make a tangible difference for them by helping them achieve beautiful, long lasting smiles, healthy bites, ease of breathing, and comfortable jaw joints that are in harmony with the face.
Dr. Ikeda was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Minnesota on her own at age 12 to study abroad. She fled the Midwest for warmer pastures and has loved the Bay Area since her early days at Cal. She graduated from UC Berkeley in the top 1% of her class with Highest Distinction in Integrative Biology and earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, Masters of Science degree in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, and Orthodontic Specialty Certification from UC San Francisco. UCSF is also where she earned her nickname of ortho ninja.
She is a course director at UCSF School of Dentistry and teaches orthodontic residents the technique of facial treatment planning for orthodontics using cephalometrics (a special x-ray technique for examining the facial structures and how they can change with orthodontics and growth). She volunteers there as an Assistant Clinical Professor to give back to her alma mater.
Dr. Ikeda continues her extensive research related to the temporomandibular (jaw) joints and has several publications in highly respected peer-reviewed journals. Her research has direct clinical application to our patient care. She is also a contributor for an orthodontic textbook written by her father, Dr. Kazumi Ikeda, titled TMJ 1st Orthodontics.
Dr. Ikeda, a board certified orthodontist, is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the Roth Study Club International. Outside of orthodontics, she loves learning to speak different languages and is fluent in Japanese and English and is working on mastering Korean and French. When she is not in the office, she enjoys spoiling her French bulldog, traveling, photography, hiking, and snowboarding in the winter.

Mounted model analysis uses 3D models of your teeth mounted on a special device to simulate your jaw and the way it moves. Because our goal is not only to straighten your teeth, but to improve the function of your bite, this technology is key to in-depth analysis of the discrepancies in your bite and the position of your teeth. Mounted model analysis enables us to evaluate all of the contacts among the teeth and if they are in harmony with your jaw joints position. This level of detail is impossible to gather from a conventional hand-held model analysis, which is still widely used by other professionals in the industry. At Hillside View Orthodontics, mounted model analysis is used concurrently with other diagnostic methods to create the most specific treatment plan for your unique orthodontic needs.
At Hillside View Orthodontics, our patients benefit from the state-of-the-art iTero intraoral scanner to digitally capture the shape of your teeth and gums using the latest optical technology. In just minutes, with a hand-held wand that uses a radiation-free laser, our team can accurately capture a precise digital 3D impression of your mouth without the goopy mess! The 3D digital models allow us to work with our outside laboratories more efficiently as they can be instantly submitted online to order your custom-made appliances, which means less wait time for our patients.
We use low-radiation digital imaging techniques to help visualize the various structures in order to diagnose with the highest accuracy while keeping radiation exposure to a minimum for our patients. Drs. Ikeda and Righellis are highly trained to review 2D and 3D digital radiographs and will recommend the images needed for your particular orthodontic needs.
A visual treatment objective (VTO) is like a blueprint used in building a house or GPS system that helps you get to your destination in the shortest amount of time. Its a technique used to forecast the jaw growth of each individual patient and the anticipated influences of orthodontic treatment, so we can plan precise, quantifiable movement of the teeth and jaws that will result in ideal facial balance. Although its time-consuming, we perform this for every patient so that we can visualize our treatment goal (have a clear understanding of our destination), and create a customized treatment plan with highest efficiency.
Indirect bonding is a technique where we place braces on a 3D model of your teeth, and then fabricate a custom tray that transfers the braces to your mouth. These extra steps we take in our laboratory allow us to place brackets on your teeth with great precision, and in less time than the traditional technique of placing one bracket at a time, tooth by tooth. Because there is less error in bracket placement, this method allows us to increase treatment efficiency and shorten your treatment time.
Do you want your orthodontic treatment done faster? We offer an FDA-approved appliance called OrthoPulse to achieve accelerated orthodontic movement. OrthoPulse uses low levels of light energy (near infrared light) to stimulate bone cells surrounding the roots of your teeth to facilitate tooth movement. It is safe and can be used with braces or clear aligners like Invisalign to reduce treatment time when used daily. While Dr. Righellis will continue to treat patients under Dr. Ikeda as his new boss, he will now be able to devote more time into teaching orthodontic residents at several universities and providing in-office courses to orthodontists all over the world. My kids (ages 10 & 12) have braces from Dr. Righellis and he's been great. So great, in fact that I now see Righellis for InvisAlign orthodontia myself (at age 54)! His whole team is amazingly professional, organized, and on time. With my kids or with me, none of us has had to wait for more than about 3 minutes in the waiting room. I've also had Dr. Ikeda when Righellis was out of the office, and she was similarly top-notch. Highly recommended!

--Updated-- After voicing my concerns to Dr. Righellis and his office, we were able to work to review my account and resolve the payment issue. They were very responsive and acknowledged that my experience was not ideal, which was very appreciated. --Original review-- I had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Righellis and my treatment, but his staff has made my overall experience a bad one. The first time I called Dr. Righellis's office after a referral from my dentist for an advanced adult orthodontic/orthognathic treatment plan, I was treated rudely and dismissed harshly enough that I waited another year before deciding to follow through with the treatment. After checking back in with my dentist and hearing about the great work of Dr. Righellis, I braced myself and called back to schedule a consultation, thus kicking off almost two years of treatment with Dr. Righellis. The biggest surprise was when, more than a year after this 2-year treatment plan was concluded, I started to receive calls from the office about the $800 outstanding balance on my account. Apparently they botched the insurance calculations (asking myself: how do they have dedicated 'insurance coordinator' staff and still make these types of errors?) and it was now going to fall on me. A shock to me, seeing as I paid for my treatment up front, in full back in 2016. After asking for a ledger of my account and records of the charges incurred and what has been paid, a sloppily recorded and inaccurate ledger was shared with me that made me even more uncomfortable with the whole situation. I will pay the balance to get the office to stop calling me, but I would definitely not recommend Righellis & Associates to anyone. A pity, as Dr. Righellis was friendly and attentive throughout my treatment.

I have been consistently impressed with Dr. Righellis and his excellent team for several years. They are always welcoming, helpful and very professional. I always leave feeling well cared for and look forward to my next visit. Additionally, as a woman needing orthodontics in her 60's, Dr. Righellis and his staff are respectful, kind and encouraging which I greatly appreciate. I highly recommend them!

Both an orthodontist and an artist, Dr. Righellis worked magic in coaxing my once perfect teeth back into line after things unexpectedly shifted as an adult. While other orthodontists had wanted to force me into a second round of expensive braces, he repurposed my retainer from childhood and painstakingly maneuvered things back to perfect. To top it off he was a pleasure to interact with as was his staff. I'm only sorry that I now don't have a reason to go back for regular visits. Thank you Dr. Righellis for the masterful work and for the trusted care!
